32 , England | Subject: Ooops, I signed up for an Ironman. Again. Am I Doomed? Hello Beginner Tri, it’s me again. Last year I started this thread: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp... It detailed my ill conceived attempt at jumping straight into Ironman distance in one season, or largely speaking, a few months. Due to unplanned reasons, I didn’t have anywhere near enough time available as I had planned to train. I therefore decided to substitute as much endurance training with HIIT as possible. It didn’t work. I was too slow on the cycle, the climb on the bike proved too much, I didn’t reach the marathon. The whole attempt was marked by a lack of preparation in a number of vital areas. This year, I am back again. I’ve signed up for the UK Ironman in July, it looks like a fairly challenging course, although the bike has a chunk less climb than France. It still looks like it’s going to be tough. This year I decided to do things different, do things right, so to speak. Take on board some of the learning from my failure, prepare carefully, train with discipline and ensure sufficient time and effort invested. Do the hard work required to realise an Ironman finish. Or rather, that was the intention. The reality has been somewhat different. I’ve had even less time this year, even less preparation. I didn’t manage to start training until 18 weeks out, with a planned 2 week taper giving 16 weeks of training. I find myself just over 2 months away from race day with the furthest run being 10 miles and the furthest cycle 13 miles. It’s all pretty disappointing, it’s hard to draw away from the conclusion that I am destined to fail once again and another race fee paid with no finish. That said, I am where I am. My taper starts the 3rd of July, I have a chunk of preparation events to gauge myself on. I might as well give it the best go that I can in the short time I have to make a difference. On the positive side, it looks like I have a few more hours per week available this time around from this point forward, so I can potentially train a bit longer. I also am going to get a bike fit, something that should probably have been a given last time around. I got mixed support last time but ultimately lots of great advice. So again, it would be great to hear any advice around how I can maximise what little I have to work with over the next 2 months. Once again, am I Doomed? |

However, next year, instead of signing up ahead of time, pick a race somewhere that doesn't typically sell out. Then, a few weeks out, if you've done the training, put your money down at that point. |

Master 8247 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Ooops, I signed up for an Ironman. Again. Am I Doomed? I would say that train left long ago. If his longest bike ride has been 13 miles, I would think he MIGHT be ready to handle an Oly in two months.. Edited by Hot Runner 2016-05-13 6:36 AM |

89 | Subject: RE: Ooops, I signed up for an Ironman. Again. Am I Doomed? I can totally sympathize. I signed up for a half (7 weeks out now) and my longest ride to date has only been 73 miles. My longest swim is only 5000 yards and my longest run is only 10 miles. I was hoping to have a couple centuries and 20 mile runs under my belt by now but work and life in general got in the way. I'm totally freaking. |

Master 2406 Bellevue, WA | Subject: RE: Ooops, I signed up for an Ironman. Again. Am I Doomed? On page 7 of the previous thread, I asked these simple questions: Originally posted by brucemorgan So what did you learn, overall, from this months-long experience that ended in DNF? And what's next? You didn't answer last year, but the answers are now obvious. "Not much" and "more of the same".

Master 2429 Falls Church, Virginia | Subject: RE: Ooops, I signed up for an Ironman. Again. Am I Doomed? Yes, you're doomed. Last weekend I did an 18 mile bike ride in preparation for a Sprint on June 5th. I'm still thinking I won't be as prepared as I want to. While I wish you the best of luck in not getting injured, I highly recommend signing up for shorter races. Cheaper and less demoralizing when you don't do the training. |

I’ve had even less time this year, even less preparation. Once again, am I Doomed? You have the time, you've just chosen not to prioritize your training over whatever other stuff you have going on in your life. We all have the same amount of time in every single week (168 hours)....some of us choose to spend 5 - 25 hours of that time training, while some choose to devote that time to family, working, watching tv, drinking beer, whatever. If you choose to not make Ironman training a priority (which you did last time and are doing again), why bother signing up and showing up? Best case is you finish and feel freaking miserable at the end....worst case -- well, there are a lot of things that could go wrong (you could injure yourself, you could end up with a nasty case of rhabdo, you could DNF and feel sorry for yourself, whatever). |

Why not starting with Sprint and *maybe* Oly if that's the time and commitment that you can offer to this discipline. I am now trying to decide if I should invest in some popcorn and watch you post this again next year ;p |

Once again, am I Doomed? most likely history will repeat itself, but if you want to give it a go...here's a suggestion... 1. bike : if you increase your long ride by 10 miles each weekend to July 10th, you will get in a 100 mile bike 2. run : if you increase your long run by 1 mile each weekend to July 10th, you will get in a 19 mile run Swim ? I have no idea where you are. but you should be swimming enough to get through the 2.4 mile swim by race day. |

55 | Subject: RE: Ooops, I signed up for an Ironman. Again. Am I Doomed? I literally laughed out loud with that meme Bruce. I spent like an hour on a slow day at work last week reading last years thread so I cannot wait to see what this bone brings. Im new to this sport and was on the bike for 10 miles this morning - I wouldnt even dare do an oly with the amount of time you have before this race. Like others have said why not do it right spend some time doing sprints and olys and work up to HIM and IM? Better yet why dont you send me you entry fees from now on and ill spend it on equipment that I need because you are clearly wasting it on yourself. |
