DC | Subject: What's your resting heart rate? Been reading that 60-100 is "normal". I'm in the 40's and 50's (38 lowest I've noticed)... surprised since it's the off season. Curious where I stand w/other "not normal" folk. |

Expert 4921 Middle River, Maryland | Subject: RE: What's your resting heart rate? I've been in the high 30s and currently am in mid 40s. I have a pretty big heart (checked by a stress test), so it's no surprise I have a low RHR. For reference, my running max is around 160 (finishing a 5k). My wife is also in good physical condition but has a RHR in the 70s and can peg into the 180s still at 45 YO. |

You are actually completely normal for someone who is in good shape. My wife doesn't do endurance sports at all.....but has exercised for 30-45 minutes each day for 25 years......misses only a few days per month, and NO swim, bike, or run......just walking or using an Airdyne for cardio......she is consistently 37-40 HR when she wakes up. She's not "not normal"........she's what would be expected with that background. |

Probably more useful information to gather than just resting heart rate |

233 Ventura, California | Subject: RE: What's your resting heart rate? My lowest has also been 38, but typically its mid 40-50's. I have also spiked it as high as 198 in a full sprint. My average heart rates during running has always been rather high, 170ish, on the bike, 150-160 avg. Age 46. I asked my doctor about such a high heart rate numbers and he asked a series of questions in regards to any ill effects, which I had none and he said carry on and be happy, you got a strong heart. Ok I said, although it still kinda bugs at me. |

Veteran 2842 Austin, Texas | Subject: RE: What's your resting heart rate? Low 40's. Max hit 181 last year (5k hill sprint finish) but seems more like 178-179 this year and the previous 3 - even at that race. In peak shape it gets down to very high 30's, and I get orthostatic hypotension (light headed on standing). I know I'm ready to really race when I fall over after tying my shoes. I'm 48 but am racing 49, so I guess my hr is that much more impressive, considering. Anyone know/read anything on the delta between low and max being an indicator of fitness? I recall that but can't remember the reference... Matt |

Elite 3683 Whispering Pines, North Carolina | Subject: RE: What's your resting heart rate? When I wake up in the morning, I'm in the mid to high 30s. Throughout the day, if I sit down and relax, I can get down to the low 40s. Otherwise, I'm in the mid to high 40s. During workouts, The highest I can go is 171 bpm. I'm 41 years old. Funny story to go along with this. I had a hernia operation a few years ago. During recovery (I was still under), the heart rate monitoring alarm kept going off, causing the nursing staff to drop what they were doing several times b/c they thought I was having heart failure. After the third time, my wife told them I was an athlete. My heart rate had been down in the low 30s. |

1520 Cypress, Texas | Subject: RE: What's your resting heart rate? My Fitbit has logs me as low as 46 and as high as 50. When I was in a car accident a year and a half ago they nurses in the ER were second guessing them self. When they took my heart rate and it came up at something in the 40's they asked me if I always had a low heart rate. I assured them that 40's was normal for me and they were relieved. They weren't sure what was going on with me then they first saw the readings. For reference I get up to 171 BPM at the end of a hard 5K (but no an easy one. I was only at 162 at the end of my last 5K. It was fairly flat and cool weather.) Edited by BlueBoy26 2017-02-08 9:41 PM |

Master 8248 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: What's your resting heart rate? Varies quite a bit, but normally in the morning when I first wake up it will be 45-50. It was lower when I was younger and very fit, closer to 38-40 (I'm 47 now; I guess my WTC age is now...horrors....48.) I think women in general tend to have a slightly higher resting HR. I know through testing that my heart and lungs are quite big for my size; probably why mine is low. (One of my coaches used to joke, "Mercedes engine, Volkswagen body." I like to imagine I'm a sturdy bright red VW Bug like our family used to have, with a big purring Mercedes engine.) On a hard run I usually max out at around 175 BPM; I think my LT rate is 173; for biking, mid to high 160's. So there is quite a low to high range for me. |
