Subject: DID YOU MEET YOUR 2004 TRI SEASON GOAL?
I just did my last tri today (Sept. 25th) for my first season, and felt a little blue on the drive home. Sad that I will miss training in warmer weather (I'm not ready for a bitter winter), and guess I never felt that I achieved the goal I wanted to achieve by the end of the season, which was to eventually finish in the first 1/2 in my age group.

Granted, I started the season just wanting to finish that first Oly and do more of them.....not until my second Oly did I decide on my new goal. Perhaps a little lofty for a newbie, but that's what dreams are for.

Many of us this year can now start to call ourselves triathletes. Many of us have either learned to swim or have become stronger swimmers, found love in a new bike, and PB'd running distance times. I can identify with the aforementioned, and just as invaluable and unexpected, I met some great new friends from HERE!

How was your season........IF it's not over yet, has it met your expectations so far?

My goals were pretty simple:

      Finish a 1/2 IM - done

Do a 4 hour marathon - I dont think that will happen on Oct 10

Do a full IM in 2005 -  I am registered for that event.

I just wanted to complete a triathlon this year - my first. I did Chicago and met all 3 of my goals:
1.) don't drown
2.) finish
3.) don't be last
I couldn't have asked for a more perfect first season :-)
Can't wait for next year!!

Nice thread idea.

I hit my goals, for the most part. I wanted to:

1. Do a sub 4hr marathon - check
2. Do several sprints/olys - check
3. Finish a Half IM - check
4. Finish top 10 for my age in a sprint. Nope. Missed. Competition was too tough!

cheer up, I'll pick you up on the way to go skiing!!

Not only did I meet this season's goals, I slightly exceeded them.  I had 6 races on my plate and when one sprint was cancelled, I replaced it with today's Olympic.  It's safe to say that the knees held up for the season (although I am just starting PT because we can't figure out what's wrong with the left one) and I made it thru the season without any new injuries.

TypeA, it was great to see you again today, and my family loves you too!

Great post. When I started swimming in Jan for my only sprint tri in March, I met my goal. Each and every sprint I've done since then has exceeded my goal, and I've had lots of fun in the mean time. I wouldn't want to do the first one ever again, though.

I had an awesome season!

My goals were:

Finish an Oly in the top half of my age group - Done

Finish a 1/2 IM upright, under my own power and NOT DFL - Done

Also, I came in almost 7 minutes under my best time in a 10 mile race, not a goal but really nice!

My goal was to finish both races and I did!
TypeAgirl, it was great to meet you before the race. I started feeling sick on the end of the bike and got a little sick on the end of the run so I just headed home right after I finished. The sight of all those hamburgers and hotdogs was not helping.
It was a great day though and I can't wait to do it again.

That sucks, Adam! You raced an awesome time for your first oly/second tri ever!! Very impressive! I rushed over to find you at transition, but your stuff was cleaned out! Not even a gu foil. LOL I was like, "jeeeez! G O N E!! He got impatient waiting!!" I hope you are feeling better today and have recovered enough to celebrate. For ditching me and Ellen, you have to meet us at one of next years' first races: the June 5, 2005 yet-to-be-named Half IM by the same race director. WE'LL SEE YOU THEN.

I am planning on racing that 1/2 IM, to make up for ditching maybe I can organize some NH training rides. I think it will be almost the same course as yesterday. I do feel bad about leaving it was so nice of you to find me, but I was in pretty bad shape.

Thanks again.

First goals of the season:

Do my first sprint tri - Did four

Lose 20 pounds - Lost 40

So I not only completed my goals but exceeded them. Don't know if my goals were too low or if I'm just too good!

New goals for the 2005 season

Run a 5k in 30 min - (I'm close off by 9 min.)

Run a 10K

Swim a mile in 30 min - not yet but will next year

Bike 12 miles in 45 min - Think I did that today

Do at least on Oly next year

Finish top half in my age group (wishful thinking. I have the most competive age group ever and I'm the slowest runner on earth).

Congrats on a great season all. And good luck next year!

Yes.  And no.

Complete my first tri: did two.

Participate in several running races: did 4, won my age group in 1.

What I wanted to do was place in the top 3 today, and I missed it.  But that's ok (well, not really, since I'm a perfectionist, but...)  I learned a LOT this year, and I know what I need to do before next year.  I've got some benchmarks, now, and I fully expect to have a lot of PBs/PRs next year.  At least one Oly (with Mary and Ovetta!), to consistently place higher, and to enjoy my new friends and new healthy addiction!

I did meet most of my goals:

Complete my first sprint Tri: Did my first one yesterday!! I finished!! The ocean swim almost did me in.

Not finish last: Well it was a close call...but I know one person came in after me...my husband said there were more...but I didn't see them and results for the last group weren't posted or online yet. Plus I beat all those who didn't finish and got disqualified.

Run the whole 3.2 miles: Done and I felt good when I finished. Well maybe it was a slow run or a jog, but I didn't walk at all.

Gain Fitness: Done

Lose weight: Lost 75 pounds in 1.5 years but not much since I stepped up my training over the last 3 months.

Now to decide about next year.

Kathy :-)

Goal was to sprints and an oly:

Did the sprints with a first and second in my age group ('Cause I'm really old and the competition is not so stiff in my group
Didn't get the OLY in 'cause I fell in love with biking and ended up doing four Century rides with one more to go.

Swim is still a chore - but improving. Amazing first season and amazing group here at BT. Hate to see the end of the season or winter in Iowa - but just added a nifty new pro quality treadmill to our home gym and hope to spend the winter getting ready to do age group national next year. (Trying not to burst out laughing - qualified this year, but times are nowhere near the times I see on the national web site. (Next year right?)

One other addition this year - joined the officials crew. Did the Wisconson Ironman and talked to "lots" of athletes who appreciate the official for trying to keep the sport safe, fun, and fair. Think about joining this group - it's a way to give back to the sport. (The chief way being to donate to BT!)

Subject: RE: DID YOU MEET YOUR 2004 TRI SEASON GOAL?
my goals have REALLY evolved since i bought a pair of clearance rack trail runners back in march, back before i had decided to do a tri, i had some pretty simple goals:

+ run around the block - DONE

after i was able to go a few miles, i finally decided on doing a tri. my goals:

+ do a 5k - DONE
+ do an 8 k - DONE

then i added...

+ do a sprint, in under 1:30, and don't be last - DONE DONE DONE
+ another sprint, finish in better time - DONE, DONE
+ do a 5k trail run - DONE
+ run sub 10 miles - DONE!!!!

and here i am, 3 weeks away from my first half-marathon. the running was the starting point - just get around the block. this morning i ran over 7 miles like it was a normal thing for me. in my 32 years, it never entered my mind that i would run more than a mile or two unless i was being chased. so, i guess i'm saying that 'learn to run' was my biggest goal, and while i am running now, running pretty well, and feeling good - i still have a lot to learn. more evolution to come, i suppose.

I made my season goals for the most part.

Complete the San Francisco marathon: Completed 8/1

Get back to Tri's after a 7 year hiatus: Completed 9/25

Finish Oly dist in 2:40 : Finished in 2:50

Overall I'm really happy with how the season turned out. Now after completing these goals and finding BT on the internet I'm totally motivated for next season.

I will break that 2:40 early next season

Yup - exceeded them.

Goals I set at the turn of the year were

1. complete Olympic distance tri - done 5/23
2. complete Great Chesapeake Bay Swim 4.4 mile challenge - done 6/13
3. improve overall endurance and fitness in the swim and run - done. In the case of running I dropped 10 minutes off my PR for a 1/2 marathon (3/7) and finished a strong 10 mile race (8/29). Biking I completed 3-4 half centuries in July/Aug and logged several hundred miles over the summer months.

Exceeding my triathlon goal, I signed up last minute for a 1/2 Ironman and completed it, running the entire way, on 9/12. The 1/2 IM goal was to be a 2005 goal but my cycling improvement was much better than expected and I figured why not?. I also finished top 10 in a local sprint - finished 2nd in A.G. in a local sprint 6/20 and got the hardware to prove it.

Still to come in 2004:

1 last sprint triathlon next weekend, really just for fun, but I'm hoping to take a few minutes off last year's time and maybe even get a top 3 in A.G.

And the last big goal for this year - my first full marathon on 11/27.

As for 2005 - our 4th baby is due in Feb - we'll have a newborn, 3, 5, and 7 yr old in the house. Better keep my goals for 2005 within reason. Probably won't tackle the big goal (full IM!!!!) until 2006. So next year I'll do some Olys and sprints, continue to build strong aerobic base (especially on the bike), maybe do a spring 1/2 marathon and a fall marathon. Possibly a 1/2 Ironman in late season, depending on how the summer goes for training.

And as always, the goal for all of this is to have fun, continue to lose weight and live a more fit lifestyle so I can be around and enjoy my kids and family as long as possible.

My only goal at the start of the season was to run a sub 4 hour marathon. I ended up doing that in May. During the last part of the race when i knew 4 hours was in the bag, i decided I would take up triathlons with the goal to complete one sprint before the end of the year. Well I ended up complteing two sprints and had a blast in both.

Subject: Not all

I did finish a sprint tri, not in last place and in the top 2/3 (all 3 were goals).  I also finished two 10k races with good times.

Due to knee problems, however, I cannot do another tri this season.  In fact, I can't do the mock tri with my Atlanta buds this weekend and I am going to have to cancel my half marathon plans.  I'm really, really bummed, especially about the half marathon. :-(  I'm having a lot of trouble finding purpose in my workouts now and feel like all of my running gains will be lost shortly.  I also feel like I haven't made good on my word.  I told people that I was going to do a half marathon and now they're going to think that I'm just lying about my knee problems or being a wuss.

Anyway, I'm going to look for another half marathon in early spring.  Hopefully, if I have another goal, albeit much further off, I'll feel better.

I met most of my goals this year...

1) Compete in 3 sprint events this year   --- done

2) Compete in and finish first OLY this year   --- done

3) Improve 5K time to 30 min   --- not done, and in fact 5K time has gotten worse, and has degenerated to about 35 min, due largely, I think to HR focused training in the early season. I don't think sprint events are long enough to warrant serious HR training!  My training methods still need alot of work...

4) Generally improve over last year's performance in the same races. --- done...

5) Lose a little weight.   ---done!

Next year, my goal is the Half IM, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin... will also do several other smaller races, and I **STILL** want to run a 30 min 5K... ( or less! )

at the beginning (January) I had a couple of goals

1. get in some kind of shape and rehab my salsa dancing hip injury
2. finish the danskin without puking
3. lose some wieght

I went to PT and worked out alot, trying also to rest it.... it was a balance exercise. As a result of all the ab and back workouts I have great core strength that helps with the swim

I finished the danskin in just over 2 hours, ran most of the run, and did not puke! I also finished the Fall Chill feeling really strong! can't wait for my times!

I lost about 40 lbs -might want to lose about 10 more.

I started training before getting engaged. Once we did, the stress of being far away, dealing with the INS, and planning a wedding was great - thank you tri-training for helping me deal with the stress (and look better in the most expensive dress I may ever own!). Thanks to the folks here for feeding a new healthy habit!
