Extreme Veteran 351 Seattle | Subject: RE: Songs that trigger nostalgia TheSchwamm - 2007-07-27 7:27 AM Pretty much every song i've heard before is linked with a memory, but Chad & Jeremy's "A Summer Song" always takes me back... Ditto. I can't remember conversations, people I've met... but a song can put me right back at a place in the blink of an eye. Both good and bad. I couldn't stand Depeche Mode for many years because it was tied up with a painful time. But put Journey on and I'm 19 again, back in the passanger seat of my best friends red pickup truck, and we're singing at the top of our lungs and laughing our butts off. (it was 'oldies rock' at the time... don't start doing age math on me...) |

Champion 10668 Tacoma, Washington | Subject: RE: Songs that trigger nostalgia Funny. Several years ago I was at a Taco Bell with a buddy (we'd just finished a killer MTB ride), and a song comes on... I say something about remembering this from high school. He says: "Dave, this song right now is the equivalent of the Beach Boys when we were in high school." Man, talk about making a guy feel old... |

Champion 5807 Henderson NV | Subject: RE: Songs that trigger nostalgia Ahhh...."The Beach Boys"..............sigh. "California girls" long nights along the beach (heck, Long days on the beach). Hermans Hermets, Paul Revere and the Raiders. Those were the days for sure.....carefree, biggest concern I had was to keep corsage colors straight for the Proms, getting a black tux and different color shirts. Shirts matched corsage which match the particular dress for the particular night. So much stress!! |

Master 1741 Boston | Subject: RE: Songs that trigger nostalgia I don't know about triggering nostalgia, but Dave Matthew's "Go Back to Being Friends" song reminds me of high school ~ 1999 ish, making out with my then 25 year old boyfriend (yes I liked older men) in our neighborhood's parking lot at 1 a.m. It ended with the cops finding our car and telling us to go home. Man, it was fun to break the rules back then! |

Giver 18427 | Subject: RE: Songs that trigger nostalgia Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite. |

As a budding high-schooler I thought it was cool when Phil launched into the drum solo in "In the Air Tonight" as Rebecca De Mornay and Tom Cruise are gonna "do it on a real train." Guess I gots some more thinking to do. |

Any boy around high school age remembers the train scene and "In the Air Tonight" very very well. Probably why we all love the song, and Bear, you hold it in contempt. You need the visual, as seen through the eyes of a near-pubescent lad. |

Master 1597 Colorado | Subject: RE: Songs that trigger nostalgia The first song ever to slap me in the face with meaning- "Every Rose has a Thorn". I just broke up with my HS girlfriend, was driving home when it came on the radio, and realized that every rose does, in fact, have a thorn. Who knew that Brett Michaels and the gang were such philosophers? Deep stuff. (Now I gotta get back to reading Sartre and comparing his existentialist theories with glam rock) |

Subject: RE: Songs that trigger nostalgia I just thought - funeral/memorial service songs. Once I hear a song played at one of these events, that song is no longer about anything else for me. I can think many tunes that are/were popular and played often, but when I hear them all I can think about is the departed. I would apologize for being a downer here, but the good thing about this is that I remember the friends I have lost. I think "losing" a good song is well worth the price of remembering my brothers. Crystal Lake, IL | Subject: RE: Songs that trigger nostalgia Last night I'm doing dishes and I've got the house sound system playing tunes off some radio station. I hear a couple of notes of the beginning of a song and jump over and turn it as loud as it will go. I go back to doing the dishes and bopping around the kitchen. Jen says I can barely hear but it's along the lines of "WTF?" I shout, "Hey, it's not every day you get to hear the German version of Rock Me Amadeus!" OH OH OH AMADEUS!
