Total Time = 2h 23m 22s
Overall Rank = 198/239
Age Group = Women 30-39
Age Group Rank = 37/49
Pre-race routine:

got up at 5:30 so that we could check the weather conditions. snow and freezing rain were forcast, so we needed to see if the world was coated in ice. luckily, it wasn't, so we proceeded to make breakfast (oatmeal w/ milk and honey, and decaf coffee). drove to faribault, mn, which is about an hour away. got to the race start in plenty of time.
Event warmup:

ran for about 5 minutes, then did some stretching. kept on lots of fleece over my running clothes to keep my muscles warm. did a clif shot 1 hour before the event.
Run
  • 2h 23m 22s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

my windbreaker and fleece vest were on almost the whole time. many people (including my brother) had advised getting a cheap sweatshirt, hat, gloves, and a leaf bag (really!) and then dropping them at the first or second water station. while i took this advise seriously, i'm glad i decided to bring the windbreaker. i would have frozen in the last 45 minutes had i not had layers to put back on. the sun was out when the race started, but when it went back behind the clouds, the wind picked up and it was COLD. i was happy to have my new water pack from rei, since i could easily stash all the layers in there during the few miles when it was warm, and take them all back out when the wind kicked up.

i'm also glad that my hrm broke. i have an extra strap at home i can use while i wait for timex to replace the other one...but i do feel like i was liberated from it. my ability to judge my own pace and exertion is obviously much more developed that i would have given myself credit for.

oh, and my 3 year old chased me to the finish line! :)
What would you do differently?:

not eat pizza the night before!
Post race
Warm down:

afterwards, i had a slice of apple - which was the best apple i had ever tasted, EVER! did a little stretching. put back on all the fleece layers. the church that hosts the race made soup and sandwiches for all the runners. so, we had some baked goodies, soup, pb&j, etc.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

my lack of sleep over the last few weeks obviously didn't help anything.

Event comments:

i would do this one again. it was really beautiful.

well, i have been liberated. my heart rate monitor strap BROKE just before the race. i did the whole race on perceived level of exertion! lap data: start to mile 3 32.11 (10.7) mile 3 to mile 6 26.40 (8.89) WOO HOO! mile 6 to mile 9 36.12 (12) hello hills! mile 9 to mile 12 35.30 (11.8) yes, more hills mile 12 to finish 12:15 (11.1)
Course: this was actually a TRAIL run and it was BEAUTIFUL! even with the cruddy weather, it was still a lovely place to spend a saturday morning. 2 miles were on asphalt, 1 mile was on asphalt/crushed limestone road, but the rest was on trails. the trails were wet and muddy from the rain the night before, covered in slick leaves. many people wiped out and a few had to drop out of the 10k and 1/2 marathon due to injuries. many sections of the trail were quite rocky. the race bragged 'aggressive hills' and sure enough - hills! i slowed to a walk on a couple of them because they were either slick, rocky, or (yippe!) BOTH! the course would have just been more beautiful if the weather had been warmer and drier, but as it was - still beautiful!

Well Done Autumn;

So next year we'll see you on the full 26.2 then?

I agree with bear you can do 26.2.
;-)
As for my run, 1 mile into a headwind followed by a mile and a half with a tail wind, .1 of amile round some houses so that was sheltered, then a headwind for half a mile. Seemed like the wind always gusted to 20 mph when I was running into it.

oy. we were pretty deep in the woods, so the trees sheltered much of the wind (much, not nearly all!). i had a tail wind for the last mile on the road. needed all the help i could get at that point!

as for the 26.2 - try telling it to my legs this morning! i was never sore after the sprints tris, the 50 mile or 30 mile rides, the 10k - but i'm sore today!

Congratulations autumn! Great race and great pics!

I thought of you on Sat. morning as we were coming out of the gym and the cold wind nearly took my breath away! I told my husband that you were doing a half that morning and we both agreed that we were glad it was you and not us! You're way tougher than we are!! Great job!

it was a cold day, that's for sure. the 5k start was moved to a different location due to ice on the road! the 10k and 1/2m started a bit later, so the ice was gone by the time i got started. once i got moving, it was okay, and the sun was out for a while.

thanks, jasmine. i always knew i could do it, it was just a matter of how miserable i would be! really, it was fun. i think 10k is my favorite distance though. don't know if i'll ever do a full marathon. my legs are still a little sore two days after the 1/2!

thanks! i asked her to run to the finish with me and she didn't come right away. i wish i would have know she was coming after me, i would have happily lost a few seconds to wait for her. my husband was busy taking that picture and holding our baby, so he didn't yell to tell me she was there. oh well, its a cute picture, and she did cross the finish line a little bit after me!

Great job Autumn!  There's another 1/2 marathon next week right here in sunny south Florida!  No worries about ice or windbreakers or anything!  Come on down.  Two 1/2 marathons in 30 days can count you as having done one full!!

Congratulations on an awesome race.
