Okay, so where should we have the event?  Considerations:

  • It should be near a major airport for easy travel and to a city that has frequent flights and cheap airfares
  • It needs to be in an area with plenty of hotel rooms or hotel choices.
  • It should be geographically selected such that its central to a region.
  • It should be an event that does not "sell out" quickly, so that as many BT'rs as possible can register.
  • It should probably be an event with both an Oly and Sprint Distance, but if that's not available, then a sprint to include as many folks as possible.
  • It should preferably be a Saturday event to allow for travel in and out of town.

Write in and/or vote for your event of choice (include event, length, date, and city/state)..  Next, we'll have to figure out how to pick one among the top entries.  Then, we can elect to rotate this to different regions of the country in future years (e.g. East, Central, West). 

My suggestion is the St. Anthony's race, which is one of the best Oly's in the country, and it unfortunately does sell out quickly.  Registration opens Dec 1, 2004 for the first 3,000 participants.  Yeah, its a big race, its well run, and is a great way to kick off the tri season.  Plus, its on a beautiful beach and the run/bike are all flat as a pancake.

I don't know who put Buffalo, MN up there (I think I've got 2 guesses ;-) ) But it gets my vote. If only becuase I'm less than an hour away.
I've heard good things about the race. The proprietor of Gearwest going so far as to say that you couldn't wish for a better race director.

Ideally it would be great if everyone could meet up at the same tri, but if not, maybe there could be an annual BT East, BT Central and BT West gathering....versus rotating yearly...

guess that sets my june schedule! buffalo tri june 6th and the bjorklund june 18th (if i can get in!). how many bt'ers do we have in mn/wi? at least a half dozen.

i'm doing the brewhouse again next year, so that could be another option. tractoral did it this year too.

The 2004 Buffalo Tri was my very first race, and I just loved it. It was a first time event too, and was *extremely* well run.

Wow, I had St. Pete picked out to be my first Triathlon, I think its actually the one that is run on Saturday, "The Meek and Mighty" or something. I thought this would be a great opportunity for my first one and I live in Orlando!!

The Pigman Sprint was my first event. A great beginner triathlon. It is close to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, a great Midwest event with lots of good hotels nearby. Sign up begins December 1st. Let me know if you are interested - I'll host a gathering the night before.

I voted for Memphis in May, because I am from Memphis and it would be fun to show my fellow BT'ers around the town, especially during the best time of year!

No worries though, St. Anthony's is already on the schedule for next year as well.  Just have to get a spot when it opens!!!

Speaking of MN and WI, even though I'm from IL, I made it up to the Lifetime Fitness Tri in Minneapolis.

That one didn't sell out, and though it was pretty large, they handled it really well imho, despite the really large numbers. Sprint and Oly distances.

Also get to see lots of elites racing up close which is always cool.

Right now, there aren't many tris scheduled in CO for next year - apparently due to the fatal accident of a triathlete in Larmier County, and the race director of the Tri the Rockies series being thrown in jail.  For a regional event, I'm thinking possibly then the Aurora Rattlesnake series, or Spring/Fall Chill if those go on as initially planned.

I haven't put it on the list but Disney was scheduled to have an International Distance tri in late September this year. It was cancelled due to one of the hurricanes and I haven't heard whether it will be happening next year. Might be a nice alternative if they decide to put it on in '05.

Corey has a good point.  The Meek and Mighty is the Saturday sprint associated with St. Anthony's, which is on Sunday.  There are races for kids and adults for that one, for those who'd rather not do the oly distance.  I don't think it sells out as quickly as the oly, so there's actually the whole weekend to meet up.

Okay, I'm voting for St. Anthony's.

The Saint Anthony's Triathlon is a great option! I swam as part of a relay a few years ago, and it was so much fun. I'm from St. Petersburg, and the course is scenic and flat. But everyone is right; it fills up so fast! Def. plan ahead if you are thinking abou this one.

Actually I put the Buffalo MN race up. I figured it was the most central race from east coast, west coast, south, and northern Canada. It would still be quite a trek for me, but not nearly as far as FL.

I'm from Memphis as well and it is a great race. It was my first DNF and I plan to go back to avenge myself.

It should be worth it for the barbeque and beer alone. Not to mention Krispe Kreeme!!
