  • Comments: Additional race report comments at http://radicalimmersion.wordpress.com/ as well as other posts as I prepare for IMLP 2012. RE: Nation's 2011. Each year I get more and more worried about the number of bikes on the course. It is really a madhouse and there are a lot of people who simply don't ride their lines or who will ride the middle of the road even when the right hand side of the lane is available. I don't know what to suggest that would not close the roads to traffic all day...other than limiting the number of entrants or allowing people who have proven certain finish times to start up closer to the elites and pros regardless of age. Overall data from watch: 57:34 in zone 3 106/155/176 heartrates 2,085 calories 140/1:46 from start to when I started watch on bike 152/1:00:13 for the bike split -- this is high by 10-15 bpm 145/2:07 for T2 156/22:33 for first three miles (7:31 per mile pace) 158/7:38 for mile 4 161/7:37 for mile 5 161/7:34 for mile 6

  • Comments: No mile markers on the run except for 5K and 5 miles. Hard to know ones pace when this kind of marking. Overall this was a great race for me. Made good decisions on the bike to ensure a good run. Very happy with this.

  • Comments: OK - putting aside all the 9/11 anniversary emotions. I can't complain abou the lack of a swim - Mother Nature has been cruel in this area for a couple of weeks (actually it was quite a feat to get the race on this week). But I was slightly annoyed that all the medium T shirts had run out by 5pm on Saturday (even with a whole lot of no shows), and far more annoyed that the run course was too short - I mean how difficult is it to measure 10k ? I think though that the organisers need to look carefully at the overall numbers on the bike course given the route : there just isn't enough time to get things spread out. It is amazing there aren't more accidents as there is a massive range of abilities and route is narrow, especially on Clara Barton. Post race is fine - good food and good live band. However even if I wasn't going back to the UK next summer ahead of next year's Nations Tri - I wouldn't do it again.

  • Comments: The rain really changed this event. With all of the mud in the transition it was difficult to push during T1 &2. Overall really good event but large so it is difficult to pass on the bike segment on the narrower roads.

  • Comments: Way to many athletes allowed to race. The bike course was not wide enough and passing was rough, especially if you were a later wave. Well organized though.

  • Comments: Mixed feelings. It was my one "destination" (and only) race of the year, so I wanted to make it count. It was in the town where I grew up, so there was extra motivation there. Days before the race, knowing how poorly I had been training, I had low expectations, hoping to finish in under 3 hrs, but knowing that had I gotten my head out of my a** after the accident I could have pushed for much much faster (maybe under 2:35?). I was pleased with my time, pleased with how I felt during the race and afterwards, but disappointed as well with the possibility of what could have been. Rain was a bleassing in disguise. I was never hot, and never thirsty. The temperature was perfect for racing. My father and brother were there to watch, and a longtime friend rocked it, finishing 5th in our age group and 98th overall, so it was a good day.

  • Comments: Logistically I think this is a tough race to organize. Parking is very limited (partciularly when there's a tea party on the Mall), and due to the number of entrants the wait to swim can be long. That said, the race was very organized, the volunteers were great, the bike and run courses were beautiful, and the Potomac River cleaner than I ever imagined it would be. A wonderful experience.

  • Comments: the organization and logistics are far superior to when I first did this race in '07. The bike course begs for a PR and the only thing I would change is the absolute size of transition...it is huge. And, although I understand the costs of a big city race with closures and such, it is hard to justify the race fees when other races are half as much.

  • Comments: Came to race wanting to beat last years time of 3:03. Kinda blew that away. Best organized race of the season in the best city. I'll keep this one on my calender.

  • Comments: Despite the rain, I'm a convert -- Nations is a fantastic race! They did a good job handling the 4000+ athletes and keeping everyone's spirits up before the race despite the downpours: bike was crowded but not overwhelming, great volunteers to warn of hazards like standing water, sharp turns, etc. Very pleased with my results (just above MOP at 50.5th percentile in AG). Time for some rest, then swim lessons and winter training (and rain-proof my transition bag and buy a poncho).

  • Comments: This was a great race and I wish I could have competed in the dry. It was expertly run and the prep and post activity really show that this is a solid race company and a well supported event. The course was fun and challenging. The mass of participants and weather really pulled in some negatives but I like the racebut was just disappointed overall with my performance.

  • Comments: The event from a race perspective was well organized. They didn't start on time but that's only because they wanted to wait for the bad weather to pass (which they announced well in advance). There were plenty of volunteers on the course. Water stops every mile on the run and people at all the sharp turns on the bike warning to help warn you. This was very helpful with all the rain. The logistics surrounding the race were a nightmare. Basically no parking anywhere near by. The were about 200-300 parking spots on OH Drive. The tried to setup a shuttle but that was only for athletes. Since the race started so early there would have been no way for spectators take the metro and see the early waves start (first AG wave was originally scheduled for 7:08 and metro opened at 7am). A co-worker told me that the organizers of the Cherry Blossom 10-miler work out a deal with the Kennedy Center to let people park there. This would have been great since it is less then a mile from the

  • Comments: So maybe I'm biased because of a good performance but I thought this was a superb triathlon. It was really well organised and they coped with the rain really well. Positives : - loads of great volunteers ! (Thanks to everyone who cheered us all on) - great bike and run route. Swimming in the Potomac was pretty cool as well ! Biking and Running thorugh DC - for me a Brit - was just fantastic and I'll take those memories with me for the rest of my life. - really good athlete's services (post race results readout, Audi virtual thingy, food, music (shame sun wasn't shining), foil blankets (I understand they ran out quite quickly) - loads of portapotties Negatives - really sharp turns on the bike route - Rock Creek issue mentioned already

  • Comments: Now, lets also be realistic. The race started late, only because they waited for the intensity of the rain to taper off. Race was started about 24 minutes late. This was due to weather. Great race overall, and need to keep doing it every year. Really fun.
