Subject: Bad year for Long-Course Triathlon?
So I was just thinking... It seems like things have been pretty wacky in the 70.3 and IM distance races this year. Some things I've been considering:

IMAZ - 3rd highest dropout rate in IM history
IMKS 70.3 - called early due to weather
IMLP - almost 3 inches of rain over 13 hours
Steelhead 70.3 - Tri turned DU on account of rough waters/undercurrent

Is this just a bad year to be a long course triathlete? Were there any other races this season with abnormal circumstances that I forgot/missed? Not trying to scare the IMWI and IMLOU athletes!

The weather got me at KS 70.3. It is hard to train for 6 months, then mother nature decides it is not your day for glory! Oh well, it is a hobby and hopefully I will be doing it for a few more years. Maybe next year will be the year of perfect weather - 65 degrees all race long for every race.

I prefer to think, everthing that can go wrong, has already gone wrong so IMKY and IMWI will be perfect race days!  :-)

Record high temps in New Hamphire for Mooseman half iron. 96+ degrees by the time we were out on the run…

PennState - 2008-08-03 8:17 AM Long course is a great challenge, and when the weather is rough, it simply adds to the experience
I agree until, the weather cancels out parts of the event. I do agree with the decisions that have been made this year and last (Chicago Marathon).

IMLP weather was worse on our spectating families/friends and the volunteers than us.

The rain may have slowed some of us on the bike but there was no humidity and that would've been the great equalizer on the run.

There were some stellar times put up this year so it's hard to fault the weather proving it was more of a mental battle than physical.

That said, some of us did have a harder tiime than others keeping our wits about us the entire time

You forgot Eagleman- it was only about 100 degrees with a heat index of say 110 on parts of the oven that was the run course when I was on it.

IMLP weather was worse on our spectating families/friends and the volunteers than us.

For most of the athletes that was the case.  For those of us with a history of crashing in the rain before IMLP, not so.  After my DNF due to the rain on the bike, I'll take Eagleman weather over rain on bike course.

At IMLP, only 152 of us out of 2345 DNFd, for a rate of 6.48%, which was a lower percentage overall, and a lower absolute number than at IMLP 2007, when the weather was perfect for us.    It all comes down to what weather conditions one does well in versus what weather conditions one does badly in.  Some love the heat, others fall apart over 80 degrees.

But after a string of bad weather for races (Columbia the last 2 years, Diamondman 2007, Eagleman 08, IMLP 08), I've got to be due some great weather next year right (knock on wood) ?

It was 97 degrees at Full Vineman last week... I think there was a good dropout rate there as well.

An hour long fog delay for spirit of racine half with discussions of canceling the swim at one point. Thankfully it wasn't!

Sometimes I think I should stop reading this forum until my race is over....it makes me paranoid.

Maybe it's just motivation to get out and train in 100o+ weather, rain, snow, sleet, hail, ice, wind, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, and 3-foot waves. That way nothing can throw you off on race day!

I've made a point to get out in the 100+ degree weather the past couple of weeks for long runs and bikes. I mean, what if it's that hot on race day? It was last year at Redman (95 I believe)... I've also done a run and a ride in absolutely pouring rain, just to see what it was like.

I've raced in good and bad conditions, it is part of the gig and adds onto the experience. maybe we see this more often now just because these days we have MORE races?

IM 70.3 at Buffalo Springs.  It could be 105 degrees and HOT in the sun.  Instead it rained buckets all through the bike.  Made the roads slick, and several folks went down, and it was uncomfortable riding in driving rain and 20 mph winds, BUT we didn't have the heat.

On race day you get what you get - like some one else said train for it.  Chances are, if you've put in the hours you've seen what ever mother nature is going to dish out.  And if you've used your head you've tried to train for likely conditions at the race.

This year I've ridden the bike in 32 degree misting fog and came back with ice on my shoes, and I've ridden in 105 degree hot sunshine and wind.  Everyone gets the same conditions on race day.

OR is it because of El Niño???

Don't be silly....... it's because of global warming.
