Very tasteless.....however, the amount of "internet vigilantes" set on ruining her life, harassing her and her parents, and ultimately getting her fired is ridiculous.

For her job to fire her AFTER the viral nature of the pic is dumb. They obviously didn't have an issue with it when she was at work....posing for the picture but in a "PR" move, they let her go.

Also....does this girl not have any friends to say "woah....slow down there....that's probably not a good idea". She had to tell someone of her costume idea, yet no one said anything??

yes, but I think we're at an interesting point in the learning curve with social media.

I think her costume was ridiculous, and really really really stupid. But had I done something like that at 22, only a handful of people would have seen it.

A lot of the Miley fallout has led to the discussion of "well, she is on public display all the time, and she's 20. 20 year olds do dumb stuff. It's not always on every network."

I see a lot of sides to that. On one hand, when I was 20, I was dumber than I am now, but to just say everyone at 20 or 22 is just a blank faced idiot, incapable of doing anything sensible, well that in itself is offensive. But yes, we could hide our dumb mistakes 20 years ago. We are approaching a society where EVERY 20 year old, "famous" or otherwise is growing up in the limelight due to social media. So now, you only get "famous" for major stupidity like this. No one gets millions of retweets and dozens of major news outlet articles from volunteering at a soup kitchen. The only thing we focus on is this stuff.

This girl (and I intentionally say girl not woman here) is clearly regretting it, and the response appears to be disproportionate to the crime. I rolled my eyes and wondered what the hell she was thinking. But to see the responses, wow, a lot of it is way worse.

I think the anxiety of having your entire life detailed, recorded and put on display is soon going to make a generation implode. At the very least, I hope it has the positive effect of reconsidering exactly how public we have to be with everything. Maybe ironic from a guy with several personal media streams listed in my sig line. But I am lucky enough to have come of age when the digital era wasn't yet making this constant unedited stream possible. I tryto be honest in my blog and now podcast, but I have filters/editing. This girl did not. She is hardly the only one.

Tasteless? Yes.

Worthy of the level of vitriol leveled at her? HeII no!

People should be ashamed of their behavior toward this woman.

Bullying is not OK no matter how angry her costume makes you.

She may have been dumb but doesn't seem to be evil. Making death threats, wishing harm, terrorizing her family. Those are the conscious acts of some very disturbed people. It is like the mob mentality of a group of fifth graders; let's all pile on until we make someone cry......

I hate everything about this story.

Good post. This is one reason I never have and never will like Twitter. What can one really say in 140 characters? Chances are nothing profound or worthwhile, much better chances to say something stupid.

I am 28, my wife is 26. We don't use FB nor Twitter or any other SM site for the most part. I participate in this forum and some car forums but that is about it. When I post here I try to make sure I wouldn't be worried about anyone reading now or in the future.

The pendelum has swung way too far when "kids" are posting their driver's license and nude pics online. I am hoping it eventually swings back the other direction. In the mean time if/when I have kids I will be counseling them to be very careful about what goes out online. Once it is out it is never coming back.

I am constantly stunned at the level of hatred that is shown by the general public in some instances - especially on Twitter - and this is just the latest.

How is making death threats or threatening any kind of violence towards her or her family okay??

As someone who was literally in the finishers chute when the bombs went off, I'm offended. Just seeing that picture was enough to start giving me the shakes again. That being said, all I need to do is click off the page and it's gone. You can't fix stupid, and I wouldn't even demean myself enough to try.

Oh, and I am a big Twitter user. But then again, I'm not posting drunken pictures. I'm posting tri club activities, keeping track of races, athletes, and friends, and the like. And I don't FB.

To be clear...  Just awful/stupid/insensitive choice and many of the responses are appropriate.

The others?  Just wow.  TO ME, they are people who want to bully, harass, threaten, and be cruel to people and now they can do it and say it's "justified".

If what's being reported is true about some of the retaliation?  TO ME, it's way worse than a costume choice.  Death/bomb/rape threats?  Some sick puppies out there.

ETA:  It also shows how addicted/important social media is.  She dumps all her accounts but then starts up another to apologize?  Man, just walk away and forget social media for a LONG while.

Horrible and absolutely tasteless idea for a halloween costume. Some things should just be left alone.

It wasnt that long ago that I was 22 so I could see how she would not think that dressing up in that costume would be that bad, mostly due to her immaturity. I did a lot of stupid stuff at 22 but atleast I never posted it online for the world to see. Horrible that people are threatening her life and her families, thats just plain wrong. I don't know how I feel about her job firing her because I don't know what she does for a living but if I did something like that, I most certainly would be fired in a heartbeat.

I think its one of those cases where her friends should be like "ah what the heck you are doing" but everyone should probably leave her alone.

If you bring something to media attention it should be part of the societal discussion of weather or not something is acceptable to society rather than direct attack on someone.

What I find amazing is they used the same excuse "We were not aware it would be offensive" or "It wasn't meant to be".

Either people are SO dumb, or just trying to backpedal, but how could you NOT realize that it's tasteless?  Making light of people that were hurt or killed and still alive (or families dealing with it)?  That doesn't take much thought to know it's wrong.

I'm not going to crucify someone with a stupid decision.  Just roll my eyes and think they are morons.  But the excuses after almost get me more aggravated than the costume/fancy dress choice.

The ones I saw I wouldn't consider nude. Partials really, if that.
