Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My 14 year old daughter has been shooting a bow for a couple of years. She started with a 15 lb. pull and had gradually worked her was up to 40 lbs. She asked to go deer hunting this year and after much practice it appeared she was ready. I have 4 daughters....all love the outdoors and are athletic, but none had ever asked to hunt even though it has been the one constant in my life. We put her in a stand this afternooon...I guess she never got the memo about the men doing the providing. Very proud of her!! She did it all. She got some help this morning de-boning the rest of the meat and she's going to make jerky out of 3 lbs. or so tomorrow, and then she'll grind some up for burger because she loves deer chilli. The rest will go to the meat locker on Monday to be made into sausage. I'm kind of surprised at how easy she took to dressing it.....but she wanted to learn to do it herself, so we taught her. Overall, her first experience killing a deer couldn't have gone better. |

That thing was a Terminator deer! Did you see the eyes lit up like green lasers! She didn't just kill a deer. She saved humanity from a half-deer, half-machine Terminator bent on securing the machines' ultimate victory over mankind!!! Thank you Left Brain Jr.!!! (on a serious note, awesome stuff. every dead deer I see I see one less MVA death and hopefully one less case of Lyme disease. thank you) |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am an animal lover first and when I see the second photo I think "what a beautiful animal". But I have a ton of respect for anyone who will do ALL the tasks associated with hunting for food. Congratulations to your daughter for providing for her family. |

![]() | ![]() That is great to see, LB. My 8yo daughter went dove hunting with me this season. She didn't shoot, but became good at differentiating dove from other birds. As far as a hunting dog, she was more of a pointer than retriever. She'd help me locate downed birds, but she wasn't going to pick them up. My secretary just showed me some pictures of her 14yo daughter and the deer she killed and cleaned this weekend. Not only did she get a 10 point, she also had to made the decision to take the whitetail or the axis which wandered in the the grove next to the whitetails. Edited by Hook'em 2014-10-27 10:44 AM |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Great pictures-- good for her! I saw a thing on HBO RealSports over the weekend about a "movement" (by a few people at least) towards people eating only the meat that they hunt themselves. It's sort of simultaneously a protest against factory farming as well as an effort to reconnect with nature and with the animals they eat. It was pretty interesting. One of the people they interviewed was a woman who discovered hunting late in life and now teaches women-only seminars about hunting and dressing game that are designed specifcally for women who didn't grow up around hunting. |

That's all good stuff.....like I said, there is a certain confidence that comes with knowing you are capable of feeding yourself.....whether it's hunting, gardening, whatever.....they are great skills to have. I don't think she sees what she is doing as any kind of statement.....she's kind of a throw back type kid. She has a horse, would rather be outside in any weather than ever sitting inside, already sees herself as fiercely independent, and just figures that she can provide for herself if needed in almost any situation.....and she does. The funny thing is, she is probably the best natural athlete of any of my kids, and she doesn't want anything to do with "normal" athletics. But, standing on a 2'X2' platform 20 feet in the air shooting a bow is nothing for her. Jumping and barrel racing horses came so easily to her it was stupid. She's nearly 5'10 and her school's coaches drool over her for basketball and volleyball, and she played both when she was 7-10, but couldn't care less now. I wish she would try running, the kid is really fast and knows it, but she won't have anything to do with it....no interest at all. She's a fun kid to have around. |

Overall, her first experience killing a deer couldn't have gone better. That is badazz. Mainly this second part. I keep toying with the idea of joining my brother in law to hunt, as I see it as the very most sustainable way to indulge my carnivorous ways. But I am just not sure if I am tough enough to dress it. And I think one should probably be able to do the whole thing. I struggle with fish, even. |

![]() | ![]() Very cool! I love hearing stories about independent, capable kids who value the outdoors and being active, which seems to be not-the-norm in this day and age of helicopter parents and electronics. Love how she made her own jerky, too. Note to self: get the dehydrater ready for a run of venison jerky, 'tis the season! (husband hunts but I don't mind preparing the deer after it's dressed) |

No secret.....I made it really easy for her so her first try was a good one.. She cured it with Hi Mountain brand cure and seasoning and then did her jerk strips in the oven after it cured for about 30 hours. It only takes about and hour and a half......and you can't screw it up. She only jerked a couple lbs. It was delicious......and gone in 3 days.
