Subject: Is it REALLY a no-no?

I am racing in the Rock and Roll 1/2 Marathon this weekend, and I haven't raced this distance in 5 years, and I REALLY want to wear my IPOD as I find I run better with music, it provides a distraction...but isn't that really frowned upon?

While I realize some of you may think, "Seriously? It's the Rock and Roll 1/2, there already will be music??" I know that others, myself included, think, "It's a race, you shouldn't use music."

I should probably just suck it up and do without, right?  Thanks for the opinions...I'm sure there are plenty!

I use my ipod for any running race. From 5k to 13.1, (and soon to be 26.2)

I always wear an ipod during running only races. You will see thousands with them most likely. Take it and use it.

I don't really think its frowned upon, especially in running races.  Its just that in many cases, headphones are illegal and result in DQ or penalty.  So long as it abides by all the rules, go for it.

Although I do think it seems odd to do during this half mary.

I don't understand.  Are you saying that people in general shouldn't use music, but that you want to anyway?

I know, but all the bands are no name bands, and I like my own music, you know?

The reason why I thought it was frowned upon was because my sister has drilled that into my head about ANY race...

I may not have written that correctly, but I've had it drilled into my head by my sister that wearing music in a race is frowned upon...or at least, that's what her and her racing buddies think, but whatever, I am going to wear it.

As long as it's not against the rules there's nothing wrong with it.

For me personally, I only have a problem with it when it's against the rules, the RD discusses it specifically at the pre-race meeting, and you still see people on the course using them.

Have a good race!

+2. Check the rules and do whatever you want. IMO, "Frowning upon" someone who likes music during a run is ridiculous.

If it is against the rules of a race and you do it anyway, IMO, you're cheating and should get a DQ.

Some races WILL DQ you for wearing headphones.  I think that happened at Grandma's a couple years ago (?)

If it's not against the rules, then by all means do what is best for YOU, but consider this:
you may like racing WITHOUT headphones.  I always run with music or an audiobook, but I never race with headphones.  I feel like you miss out on the atmosphere of the race ... esp. a race like R&R that has a "party atmosphere"

my suggestion would be to not wear them and see what happens.

I have done several Rock n Roll races. Most people have their own music. The bans are spaced out and it seems that they are always between songs when I run by.

Check the rules - it's usually banned at a USATF race.  I imagine that a big race like that is USATF.  At Grandma's they were confiscating them.  It wasn't clear to me if they would put your name on it, so you could pick it up later, or what the deal was.  Not a risk I'm willing to take!

If it's not banned, do what you want.

I just checked the web site and they don't say anything about it, so go for it.

However, please be aware of other runners when crossing the street, cornering, etc.  The only people I have ever been tripped by in big races are those wearing headphones.  Seriously - it's annoying.

I'd suggest to bring it with you, but start the race not wearing the headphones. If you get totally bored a few miles in, put them on and enjoy. But at least try a little ways wtihout them to see what it's like.
Sounds like a fun race!

i've never used one during a race as I like to go as light as possible and not have to deal with anything - I don't even bother with a watch. But I'm not opposed to them. I imagine I'll use on in a race situation someday.

I think you're putting too much thought into this. It's a run. You entered b/c you enjoy running. They don't give you extra points for being a purist. If you enjoy it and it's allowed, wear it.

x3.  I dont race with one personally, train with one every once in a while.  Ipod or not, my beef is with folks that are swerving around or make a quick cut without checking behind em.  More often than not my experience has been its someone with an Ipod.  So for me, the issue with Ipods is for folks that run like idiots and cant hear you if you are passing.  Other than that, have a blast so long as its race legal!

IPODS annoy me, but a lot of things annoy me about races.....Just make sure you can hear people and be aware of your surroundings.

I've actually had several folks slam into me, I scream at them, and they point to the ears and mouth - I can't hear you. Okay, I'm not wearing headphones, you can actually SPEAK

I always run with an iPod but never race with one and never miss it on race day.  There is usually so much going on that I want to hear....spectators comments, other runner's comments, bands along the course etc.

I ran the Country Music Marathon and they had bands every mile.  You could hear them long befor you got to them and long after you passed them.  It was really fun running from band to band.  There was one band that cracked me up.  As I was passing them they were singing the song, "...you're no good, you're no good, you're no good, baby you're no good!"  I thought, good Lord, they must of timed that just for me!!

Head-phones are frowned upon.

Not only that but they attract bears- putting everyone in danger.
