Subject: Why are bikes Female
I don't mean the old crossbar that dips down, I mean, when we are all talking about our bikes, or someone elses bike, we use the female term.

You will love her
She is hot
I rode her all day long... wait- that is for another board !

Seriously though- I did it long before I discovered this website... wonder why.

Thoughts?

Hard to provide a legitimate answer when there is none.

The English language does not use gender basis for items like French/Spanish and other Latin-based languages do.  So perhaps it is some influence from other cultures??

Or because when one thinks of sexy and attractive, the female body comes to mind.  Guys are handsome, gals are sexy.  Some bikes (and some cars) are sexy.

With boats, it is to remind you to respect the ship/ sea.  Also its just plain bad luck to have either no name or a male name...

I respect sexy.

It started with the sailboats long, long time ago when cars and bikes were not on the scene. The crusty, sexually deprived sailors had a close relationship with their graceful, curvy ships and treated them with respect they deserved.
Then it carried on to the cars and bikes. Not quite te same though.

If you look far enough back, women were not allowed to sail, so the ship was the mistress of the sailors. I believe the same basically goes with cars, and it has just carried over.

Because my bike is sexy and sleek.

Men have female bike names and women have male bike names.  Makes it less weird to have your bike as your mistress.

My bike's a machine, a tool designed for a specific purpose, inanimate unless I propel it. It has neither gender nor a name.

My bike is a male.  His name is Bruce!

Also, when I rowed, we had a male boat, Bob. Unfortunately our coxswain goofed up and directed us sideways under a bridge and poor Bob crashed into a pillar.  I guess it is bad luck to have a male boat.

i just get a "sense" that they are one or the other.  no reason really.

My bike is a POS and is undeserving of a name or gender, but it is what I have and so I ride it, my bike.

Now if I had a sweet bike like some of the rides I am passed by, then I would still call it, my bike.

Same with my car.

Though I don't actively think of it as a person. It's still a bike. But it's a girl's bike.  My bike is clearly a girl - aqua blue so i think of it as a girl and called it Perdita (hmmmm maybe my next one will be Pongo, I just like the name) - not sure why.

I like women who wear all black ...... it is a sexy sexy color!  With a little hot red make-up in the right places and sparkly shiny accents.

Bikes are female because they're expensive and make us suffer... and we can't live with out 'em.

^^^^ Your seat is too high.  (Ha! You knew someone had to do it!)

Our then six-year old son stuck a sticker of "Tow-mater" from the Disney "Cars" movie on the front of my bike. It is only half the size of my thumb, but the thing has stayed on there for a year and a half, through racing in the rain, many washes, etc. So I call my bike, 'Mater.

Not wrong - but maybe "recently" was a stretch... They didn't "always" alternate at you state.

An Australian meteorologist began giving women's names to tropical storms before the end of the 19th century. In 1953, the U.S. National Weather Service, which is the federal agency that tracks hurricanes and issues warnings and watches, began using female names for storms.

In 1979, both women and men's names were used. One name for each letter of the alphabet is selected, except for Q, U and Z. For Atlantic Ocean hurricanes, the names may be French, Spanish or English, since these are the major languages bordering the Atlantic Ocean where the storm occur.

The trend was to also name the first hurricane of the year with a name starting with an "A" then moving down the alphabet as the year progressed.  I'm not sure if they follow that still.
