Champion  5312   Calgary |  Subject: Beyonce Half Time ShowI am completely out of touch. To me it was just weird, like a car wreck in motion. She didn't seem to be singing. She didn't even seem to be dancing. She seemed mostly to be gyrating and shaking her head. And to be honest, she wasn't even that good at gyrating. Then there were her longing looks into the camera like she wanted to wrap her legs around it, made me feel icky. I don't get it. I guess the point is to put on a show not really sing, is that right? The last decent halftime show was Tom Petty. All pretty bad IMO since then. I was surprised at the lack of set last night. Last year the stage was crazy with lots of moving parts and such, looked like they didn't put near as much into it this time around. |

I also thought it a bit strange that every time she turned around they would change the camera shot so you never got a shot of her butt. Was that a censor thing? Or was it in her contract not to show her butt? I mean a lot of times in those videos that is one of the goto shots, picture of girl shaking booty. But that shot was completely missing. What I liked about the black eyed peas was you could hear they were singing or struggling to sing. I think that is what makes live music cool. |

Just not my thing, but I'm sure some folks enjoyed it. I thought it started well and got progressively worse, as the selected songs in the medley got even more bland. I still think Prince set the standard a few years ago, combining great musicianship (not pre-recording) and great showmanship. I'd love to see Muse get a shot at the gig-- having seen them live a few times, I think they were made for a showcase like that and would bring at least some edge to the production. If U2 post-9/11 was a "10" I'd give this one a high-7, low eight. Musically, I prefer the Who and Tom Petty to Beyonce, but for a halftime show? Give me spectacle and pyrotechnics and hot women and energy over a bunch of 60-year old guys with guitars singing a medley of their Greatest Hits to a half-interested crowd. |
