Do you do it? Why or why not?

My first marathon is coming up next month and Santa brought me the 405 which I LOVE. I've been training with it since the day I got it. I am debating whether or not to wear it during the marathon - on race day. No HRM so do not take that into consideration.

Pros:
I will be able to set the little pace guy for my goal time and see how far ahead/behind I am.
I will have each mile split at the end of the race.

Cons:
Constantly looking at the pace/time could be a major distraction.

I've both worn it, and gone without in various races.

Wear it, but set the screens to show elapsed time.  Your distance will be off, anyway, and mile splits are going to be fairly meaningless for your first.

Wear it but ignore it. Use it to record your splits and HR for posterity and further analysis.

Your first marathon should be run moostly by feel and not by some preconceived estimate of what your pace should be. The caveat to that is that if you don't feel that you're going too slow at the start then you're probably going too fast.

I wear it (305), but don't set the little pace guy and don't "constantly" look at it.  But I've also always taken mile splits and never considered that a distraction from my running.  So basically, I'd suggest considering how big a "con" you think that is.  If it will distract you negatively, don't wear it.

When I race I tape over the display so I can have the data later but it doesn't distract me from racing my race. I find that I do better racing in the moment and staying moment focused is easier without knowing my splits.

i will def be wearing mine for my first this weekend.  I figure having the data will be very helpful.  And I want to see my splits...I think it would bug me more not to have a handle on it after all this training with data.  And although priority one is just to finish...if I see my pace is strong the first half and I can hit my goal it can give me that data and I will know whether I should kick it up at the end or not if I'm close to my goal. On the other hand, if at the halfway mark I am out to lunch with my time goal I can adjust and just focus on having fun and finishing.

I wore it for my first mary yesterday.  I didn't look at it compulively, but it gave me some feedback on my pace.  I set my pace by perceived effort, but used the pace feedback for encouragement and to help know when an aid station was coming up, they were at wierd intervals.  I definately did not try to match my pace to match the paceguy on the watch.

Baowolf

First off...congrats on an awesome first Mary.  But since you had the HRM on and were able to hold a nice run the entire time I am curious to hear your stats.  What was your avg and max HR for the race, did you negative split or steady, and what was your HR like in training for the long runs?

thanks

wear it,,

I"ve done them both wearing one and not... I like the info afterwards, and it doesn't really bother me that much,, I'll have the display to pace/HR and toggle it to time/pace, it never really distracted me..

I wear mine in every race I run. While I am not a slave to it, I use it for pacing and to monitor HR.  I know that I cannot go over my LT too soon in a race or I will blow up, especially in a marathon so I find it valuable information.  You have to take it with a grain a salt.  Heat, hydration, interference can alter the reading a bit, but I still think it is worthwhile.

I wore mine yesterday and can't imagine doing a race with a goal time without it.  Honestly, towards the end of the mary, my perceived effort is greater for the same pace so my Garmin keeps me on track.  I was not a slave to it at all, but I did check my pace every mile and used it to help guage water, etc.  Good luck!

I can't imagine not wearing my Garmin during  a race.

That said, since it's your first, don't become obsessed with time/ distance/ pace, and def. don't set the pace guy!

irondreams - 2009-01-19 2:25 PM I wore mine yesterday and can't imagine doing a race with a goal time without it.

It's actually relatively easy, once you've done it a couple times.

Knowing the potential for innaccuracy of both the machine and the course markers it is really a crap shoot as to what you get.  I personally do not have one but I do use a watch to keep track of splits based on the mile markers.  Then I compare them to what my effort level feels like and go from there to adjust my pacing accordingly.

Don't remember a race/run/ride without one.  Not a slave to the stats, but like to keep track to compare how I'm feeling as to what the #'s reflect.  Also a nice distraction when I need it.

OK, because I'm bored, I'm gonna say it....

I find it interesting all the people who say they aren't a slave to it, but can't imagine not using it.

As others said, it almost definitely won't be in sync with the course markers.

I also agree with those who advise simplicity -- don't use the pacer and stuff like that.

Anyway, to answer your question:  I wear mine, but only because I don't have any other watch.  I hit the lap button when I reach the mile markers rather than using the Garmin to determine split times (but whether the Garmin or the mile markers is more accurate is a crap shoot...).  In my last marathon, though, I admit this ended up being a problem, since I hit the 'stop' button once by accident and screwed everything up.

Anyway, it's nice to have SOME sort of watch on, since you will very likely not be starting at the front of the pack, and the posted times at the mile markers will therefore be very different from your actual time.  Sure, you can do the math in your head, but that math gets 'fuzzy' after mile 22.  Smile

I wear it. Because I always wear it. Because my Garmin owns me, not the other way around. I am a slave. I am whipped, owned whatever you want to call it. I cannot imagine running without it. I love to look at the run afterwords, I love to hit the Lap button, I love it. I love seeing the route on gooogle maps.

That being said, once the pace starts to slow, nothing can get it back.

I forgot to turn off the GPS when I was on the treadmill the other day and the GPS showed my route walking around the gym, which was pretty funny.

In my humble opinion, I think you are better off wearing it and I would use the pacing especially the first 10 miles where you have to run with your head. I have seen too many people feel great and run faster than planned only to die a horrible fate later in the race. It seems like the big thing now is pacing groups (there was an article in Runners World a few months ago) and the Garmin basically does the same thing.

That being said you still need to listen to your body. Maybe your intended pace just feels to fast and you need to back off. Later in the race, I would only look at my Garmin out of curiosity and run how I feel to complete the event.

I wore my during my first marathon.  After the race tried to upload but it would not upload.  All other runs do, maybe the race is too big to upload.  Any one else run into this?  Any ideas on how to fix this?

I would wear it for the data and route dowload at the end.  I just love data.  However, I may glance at it only occasionally to see where I stand overall (just like any other watch)...

I'd almost wear it just to have a distraction! You can't be 100% focused the entire race. Personally, I love getting the feedback on pace, etc. X2 on the warnings about not getting tooooo carried away if your pace lags or is too far ahead.

Just so we're clear on this:  You don't need a Garmin to regulate your pace.  A watch and mile markers is more than enough.
