Pre-race routine:

Day before I met Tom (madcow) quite possibly the nicest guy around, at the race site to sign up.

On my way tot he race the tire blew out on my rental car...what an ordeal. You DO NOT want to stop on a CA freeway at 5am in the dark...well not if you want to live. I wasn't really sure what was going on with the car as I have only ever had one flat before and it was nothing like this. I actually thought it was the muffler at first. Made it to the race site and proceeded to spend the next hour on the phone trying to get someone from the rental agency to come help. I figured if worse came to worse I would change it myself and return the car SO I gave up and concentrated on the race.

Event warmup:

Phoning the rental car Company? Ate 1/2 a powerbar on the ride up (I'[m getting addicted) and 1/2 a banana. Met up with Tom and his lovely family (happycow, destructocow and dadyouareembarassingmecow)they are all so great :) Got my transition set up...its amazing the things you can do without...esp since I had a pair of goggles, some running shoes and a trisuit..oh yeah a hat. Borrowed a race belt from Tom.
Swim

  • 440 yards
  • 02m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

ALL TIMES ARE OF MY WATCH UNTIL THEY GET POSTED

Whoa baby it was choppy. Big ole waves crashing over my head. Everyone said the same thing about the swim. It was tough getting out then once you made the first turn it was fine. I think half my time was getting to the first bouy
What would you do differently?:

Swim in big surf more often?
Transition 1
  • 03m 53s
Comments:

These times are off my watch...there was a big wet slippery ramp we had to go up. I walked up it. across the street and into transition. I'm surprized my time was that good.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Didn't want to get hurt on the slippery pavement.
Bike
  • 31m 11s
  • 9 miles
  • 17.32 mile/hr
Comments:

I borrowed Toms bike (THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU). I didn't have biking shoes, clipless pedals or toe clips. I did good for me on the hill and even passed some people. I didn't train for this race really so I was just out there trying to have a good time. this was pitiful slow from what I normally do but it was all about having a good time today. I know how that guy who won St. A without his biking shoes felt now
What would you do differently?:

Bring my bike the next time I am away for this long? I'm so grateful to Tom for letting me borrow his.
Transition 2
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

this went fine. I had a little trouble racking the bike, because someone re-racked almost on top of my stuff.
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Run
  • 35m 10s
  • 3 miles
  • 11m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

Well its my nemesis again. This is the furthest I have run since St. Anthonys and finding out about my busted hip. My left hammy was sore at first as was my right calf. that quieted down. I had some right hip pain but not from the fracture...muscular pain. I kept it slow and comfortable. Tom caught up to me and I told him not to wait on me and just go so he passed me and then we kept passing each other on the loops high fiving it when we passed on the loops.
What would you do differently?:

train running? I'm happy I was able to run the whole thing ( I walked maybe 100 yards) I have not trained running since about March. I'll take it !!
Post race
Warm down:

Found Tom and his Family. Drank lots of water. It is so much cooler here I didn't feel hot or thristy at all. I didn't drink hardly any gatorade on the bike and looked at the run as an opportunity to learn how to drink from a cup..I think I made some progress :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I haven't run for months, surf, no bike shoes, sore right calf.

Event comments:

I approached this as a fun training day with a cool BTer. (good thing because this was my worst swim, worst bike and well my run is always bad) of all my races so far )I hadn't trained for it and I haven't run in ages. I knew I wasn't going to set any land speed records so I truely was just out to have a good time and finish. I didn't push myself on the run at all. I wasn't even out of breath or anything when I finished.

The car people came while I was on the course and extremely nice triathlete gallantly changed my tire for me. I was eternally grateful. Then I ahd to take the rental back and trade it is.

Yeah, great job, especially since you decided to do this race a few days ago! Talk about no preparation. So, I guess this is the start of you starting to run again? Glad there were no major problems...glad you had a nice time with madcow!

Thanks everyone..this was pretty unplanned.  Tom mentioned the race before I left FL but Ididn't think I could run.  Then when I came here I ran on the soccer fields and it was OK so I figured what the heck !!!  The run was a 2 loop course so I figured if I was hurting I could bail after the first loop anyway.  I didn't expect to do anything time wise so I just kept it slow and steady and had a good time.

Time splits are up...they didn't do transitions I guess so I left those alone.  Its not like I was fast or anything anyways.  I must have started my watch early because total time was a little off..looks like my run was slightly better than I thought.  They didn't have ranking for each event.  Looks like eyeballing it MOP swim BOFOP bike and BOP run...typical.
