Subject: Anyone train with a aerohelmet?
I was riding in Central Park and I use a regular helmet. Noticed someone all tri'd out (pimped out cervelo with zipps) flying by with a aerohelmet. I have been looking online for sales for one, was curious to see how many people ride with one on a regular basis. I know some out there who think it looks "geeky" as I heard it once from someone. I'm more of a MOP biker so not sure if it will benefit me much? The last HIM I did, I don't recall seeing too many people wearing it. Of course the ones that do tend to be the speed demons. The other concern I had was safety, are they as safe as a regular helmet? Thanks

Also for those that use one, recommend a good one?

I race with one but I would never train with it.  What is the point...?

I don't own one.

I always wonder a little bit about the guys I see riding around every day on a $2300 set of zipps with an aero helmet... but to each his own.

I do sometimes. I am not a speed demon by any means, but I believe that you should train as you will race and that includes getting used to equipment.

As far as safety goes, they all meet the safety standards so if you fall your head is as protected in one as the other.

Funny aerohelmet story from my last race. The bike course had hills, lots of them, and I hadn't trained for the hills, so I struggled. On the biggest hill I had to walk it up. When I walked passed another biker I said "Imagine how much slower I would walk up this hill if I didn't have the aerohelmet."

To be used to it on race day. I know I have to hold my head higher with the aero helmet, to be able to see and to get the tail closer to my back, than I do with the road helmet. So it doesn't hurt to get in a few training rides.

But, no, not every day.

It's possible this guy was testing out his race setup before a big race.  I never train with my race wheels or aero helmet, but I'm getting it all set up today to have it ready for my HIM this weekend.  I'll to fit in two rides in full setup between now and the race to make sure it's all set up correctly.

I just recently bought one and I sure as heck plan on taking it for a few rides to get used to it and make sure there won't be any issues prior to taking it to a race.  I definitely won't be using it for regular training rides once I'm happy with it though.

When I first got my aerohelmet, I did a couple of rides and wear it when I am tweaking my position.  Other than that, it sees race day use only.

If I ever get a wild hair up my butt and pick one up I'll probably just wear it on the rollers and not wear it outside until race day. I feel weird enough when I do my couple rides on the race wheels to remember what the wind feels like on 'em.

I won one in an online giveaway...but it hasn't seen the road yet as my racing season was already over when I got it.  I likely won't test it until a few weeks before my next race in march.

But I don't see the purpose in training with it if you are already accustomed to it.  The helmet's job is first and foremost to protect your head.  If you hit your head in a crash...your helmet is done...you can't repair it...I certainly wouldn't want to wreck a $180 helmet (even though I didn't pay for it )...compared to the $60 one I train with.

I have an aerohelmet and I definitely don't train in it. I can't even make myself race in it. I just feel like I'm way too slow    I felt really good when I averaged 19.7 mph in a sprint...which is great for me, but I feel like I'd look silly with an aerohelmet on. Maybe I need to get over it and just wear it.

You're already wearing spandex!  Who cares what you look like?  The helmet will make you faster, so unless your speed doesn't matter to you at all, there aren't many good reasons not to wear it!

LOL...that's a great point on the spandex.  Seems kinda silly also to have one and not use it.

I was thinking the same thing.  I look pretty silly with anything on, so if I ever came into possession of an aero helmet, you can bet I'd be wearing it on race day.  Go for it.

I mix it up.  Now that it's chilly I'm actually more likely to wear it because is covers my ears.

Also wear it to get work on position and tucking my head a certain way for periods of time as I tweak my position.  Train like you race.  I know a lot of guys that train on their race setups at least once a week.  Not sure why you wouldn't.

I have a mirror that clips on the visor of my training helmet so that I may see behind me:

http://www.amazon.com/Bike-Peddler-Cycling-Eyeglass-Mirror/dp/B001VTQNVO

I am such a firm believer in the dramatic increase in safety it provides that I very rarely wear my aero helmet in training, typically only on TT efforts/Lactate threshold testing (it will not clip on to the aero helmet properly).

After my first ride with the mirror, I now consider it just as an important piece of safety equipment as the helmet itself.

I'll wear mine on my training rides when I am about a month out from a race just to get used to it. If there is not a race upcoming, I don't wear it.

OK, yes.  Testing and getting used to gear before a race is OK.

You don't want to be using any new equipment or doing anything new on race day.  As a result, I recommend at least a ride or two with your aero helmet if you're planning to race with one on.  I usually rock my in my final ride before a race.
