Subject: Longest marathon recovery ever!

Well, I had expected to take the next ~2 weeks to recover from Boston before getting back to serious training.  Now it looks like I'll have a minimum 6 weeks before i can even start to walk again so my recover will probably end up being 4-6 months...a bit overkill for marathon recovery   Seriously though, my official recovery from the accident started around 1pm this afternoon when I signed for my new set of crutches and took my first "steps" since slamming the blacktop on Wednesday.  I told the therapist that I prefer carbon or titanium but all they had was aluminum so I'll have to make due.  Maybe I'll paint them with zebra stripes to match my bike.

I'll be doing a lot of thinking about how to salvage something out of this season over the weekend.  I'm looking at a minimum of 6 weeks before I can begin walking (or driving) and as much as 3 months before serious rehab. Once the bone is healed I'll be back in action to some degree but I doubt I'll be doing any racing. At the least I'll be volunteering at local races and might still make the trip up to Timberman to help out where I can with Final Kick or the race itself. I've got some ideas for Sept-Nov but I need to see how things go over the next 6 weeks before I start making any serious plans.  I'll be an officially certified USAT Level I coach in 2 weeks and I'll have my USA Cycling Level III certification soon also so I'll get involved locally helping with the group workouts and practice races...anything to keep my mind in the game.  I guess I also have some free time to work on my growing pile of reading...I was supposed to take care of that this winter.

Thanks again to everyone for the support...just amazing.  No more talk about the accident...it's time to get ready for the season.

Hang in there Joel.  You've got support and encouragement here, and you also have a great partner with you.  Good luck in your recovery, hope to see you at Timberman if you can make it!

Great attitude, Joel, and some great ideas. Man, we're all going to learn a lot with you facing that pile of reading and having access to a laptop for 6 weeks...

I'm so glad to hear that your are doing well after surgery and in good spirits. If you want some inspiration, I broke my back in two places 2.5 years ago (L1 and L2). I slipped and fell down stairs coming home from a swim meet (I know I'm a klutz). When it happened, I could not walk, but could wiggle my toes. I was in the hospital for over a week and was not able to walk without help for another 4 (at the time I lived in a 4th floor walk up) so needless to say I didn't get out much! After about 3 months I was able to start swimming again (sans flip turns and butterfly because that hurt too much) and about 2 months after that I started training for my first tri....which I successfully completed 7 months after the accident.
It may seem like an eternity till your able to compete again, but I'm sure this event will only make you stronger. Plus, you'll likely be able to swim before you can run and bike...so it's a great chance to master that aspect of the tri while on your road to recovery.
Best of luck!!!

Nice to see you are home and on the road to a great season of coaching, volunteering, reading, recovering, and becoming even more of an amazing all-around athlete than before!

I'm sure you probably already subscribe to all the mags, but if you don't, I've got lots of back issues of Runner's World, Triathlete, Inside Triathlon, and Bicycling that I'd be happy to send you for your reading enjoyment.

You may not have been able to hit the ground running, literally, but it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job of it, figuratively. Good luck with your recovery Joel and try not to push it too fast.

Glad to hear you're home safe and sound.  When I read about the accident, I looked down, and there on my desk was the printout of your diet philosophy.  I've never met you, but you've definitely impacted my just-beginning tri career.  Maybe you can use the next 4-6 months compiling your ideas into a training and recovery manual.  I'm sure there are tons of people who'd be willing to part with some of their money to have handy access to your thoughts.  Can you say "e-book"?

Awesome winning attitude!

As for the crutches, it could have been worse - wood ones! And custom geometry carbon ones take too long to make, your bones would have had their 6 weeks to heal before they'd be delivered!

Kate's been too much of a stranger around here lately - tell her she can't come on to deliver bad news then disappear again....

Attaboy!  They say that triathlons are 90% mental ... well judging by your attitude regarding the accident, I'd say you have that covered.

Think volunteering for local races is a great idea.  You might want to check into your local Team in Training organization to see if they need a running or cycling coach/assistant coach.  You get to add that to your coaching resume, garner the experience of herding cats dealing with a multitude of different people with different levels of fitness and exposure to a bunch of TNT graduates that may or may not be in need of continued coaching ... all the while supporting a great cause.

Good luck and Godspeed with the recovery.

Hey Joel,

I hope the recovery goes well and that you're able to race again in the fall.  You know that most of us are thinking that right now would be our only hope of taking you in a 10k.

Glad you're back, man. Start to work on that reading; I want regular reports.

I did a semester of college on crutches.  I recommend that you get the kind that have a cuff around the forearm.  The conventional kind that come up under your armpit rub too much if you do much walking.  The forearm type are also much easier and safer for going up and down stairs.

Really take it easy until the bones are set.   You want that hip socket to heal back really round and smooth.

See you around.
