Subject: Vacation Alone?

I am looking at going to one of my favorite vacation destinations in February.  Playa Del Carmen

I will most likely be going alone.

Anyone done anything like this before?

It is completely dependent on your personality.

You ever do a myers-briggs assessment? Here's a place to start online

I am a pretty extreme extrovert, but with certain activities, I find I like solitude. Gee, wonder how I found my way to triathlon training? But sometimes it backfires. I went to a couple concerts solo. Never again. But someone else might prefer it that way 100%.

I've taken many roadtrips by myself. I like driving across the country. I've done tons of races out of town, within a four- or five-hour drive, by myself, slept in the car, raced and then drove home. It's always a good time. I now have the best travel partner in the world, but wouldn't be against doing that again.

I'm going to San Juan alone in March, and perhaps the Bahamas in January, also solo.... and I'm totally looking forward to both.

A friend of mine did almost all of her traveling solo - to Mexico, Africa, on cruises... and she loved it.  As for me, I'd be good with being by myself for a couple of days and then I'd want to have someone to distract me from myself.

Thankfully I've got the best person ever to travel with now.

Yes! I love traveling alone and I've also backpacked alone. Don't be afraid to travel by yourself, you won't have to compromise with anybody and do whatever you want. Plus, because you are alone and if you want to hang out with other people you'll be kinda forced to make friends Have fun!

I once spent a week cave diving in Northern Florida by myself.  I loved it.  I didn't have to check with anyone on what to do or where do go, I just sorta went where the wind/current took me.

Vacation? No. Work travel? Used to a lot. And loved it. For some reason, it never occured me to do a solo vacation... Hm. Something to think about.

I went on a trip/vacation alone once between relationships.  I was not a fan.  It was a good trip, but when I turned to talk to someone about the beautiful/interesting/cool thing I was seeing, there was no one there.  It was a bit frustrating to not have someone to share it with.

However, I had an amazing time other than that.  But it felt like something was missing.

I used to travel for work a lot and so had a lot of fun exploring the cities, eating out, and finding things to do alone.

I went on a vacation one time essentially alone.  My mom was in NYC for work and I just crashed in her room, we didn't do anything together or even see each other.  My only regret with that trip was that I didn't have anyone to share the amazing sights I was seeing.  At the time I was disinclined to talk to strangers.

I have gone off on my own during vacation with friends, husband, etc, and now I have more fun if I strike up a conversation with someone.  I guess for me, the trip is about shared experiences.

In PDC, I highly recommend going on a group tour.  You might meet someone(s) fun to meet for dinner later.  I really liked this company.    My friends and I bought the package (snorkel in a cave, zipline, rapelling and a great lunch) from a reseller on the main street, so just ask for Aventuras Mayas.

Went to France with my 2nd son back in August, and it actually felt like I was traveling alone - he didn't talk much with me, something I didn't expect knowing that he is more of a talker than his older brother.  I was not too happy about that.
Now, if I would've gone by myself, I wouldn't have worried about responsibility and such.

my husband really really wants to hike the inca trail.

i don't.

i really would not care if he went without me...it's been a dream of his for a very long time, as long as we can afford the trip and the timing is OK in our lives...why wouldn't i let him go on his own?

I used to travel alone frequently.  Mostly kayak & camping trips but also a couple of more traditional vacations and they were all great trips.  This past year I've traveled a bit more for business and have enjoyed exploring the cities I've visited on my own.

Some would argue that its more dangerous to cave dive with a buddy.  I think that school thinks of the 2nd person as another possible point of risk/panic/fail, now endangering 2 lives.

I once had an incident with 2 other divers that got lost in a silt out, and I had to consciously make a decision to abandon them due to my "air rule".  However, after about 100 yards, as my conscience started digging into me, I turned back around luckily they were coming out of the cloud.

Dangerous?  Yes.  But its a calculated risk.  I planned my dives and dived my plans.  I took an extra "buddy bottle" for emergencies only and never had to use it.  I think I had 3rd back up light too.  Again, I never had to use it.

You're flipping awesome!

Yes I could vacation by myself, but I prefer to do it with my wife.  Hiking the Inca trail sounds like something I'd like to do as well... I don't even know what it is but it sounds cool.

Sure, all the time.

Spent a few days touring in China on my own this summer, meeting up with connections at the beginning and the end.  Solo camping is a nice refreshing too.  (Now I bring the dog.  Does that count?)  You set your own schedule, eat where you want, and aren't "babysitting" someone with no travel or camping experience.  Awesome!

Frankly I am just about as extroverted as they come and STILL enjoy a break like this from time to time.

Yes, I've done road trips and camping by myself. In fact, I was just at a couple of Utah national parks last month.

A big plus is being able to follow your own schedule.
Sometimes I'm impatient. There is so much to see.
I hiked and took pictures all day because I could. Traveling with others typically means slowing down the pace and worrying about them.

But there are cons of course. If you can go with your honey, that's nice too.

Seems like a lot of us prefer setting our own schedule.  Reminds me of a college trip.  I had been living in Italy for the year and took a train to London to meet my best friend for our College Buddies Jaunt Around Europe.

Our reunion started with her being mad at me for being five hours late.  (The dockworkers were on strike in Calais; I considered it a minor miracle that I arrived on the correct DAY.  But before cell phones, this thing was certainly a pain.)  The next day I learned that some people consider "shopping" an actual vacation activity.  (Who knew?)

We quickly learned to split up from time to time, including for a few days when she went to Stonehenge and I went to Belgium.  We met up again in Versailles a few days later.

Our wisdom to split up occasionally definitely saved our friendship, and the trip.

Go for it, and enjoy every minute.
