Subject: Happys States, Sad States

I was just reading a survey thing that ranked the 50 states in terms of happiest to saddest. I notice that Colorado was #2 and Indiana #42. Indiana is kind of a sad place. What the guy that recently had to move from Colorado to Indiana suddenly makes more sense.

One thing I'm finding about polls and random sampling is, at least for subjects I know something about, people tend to lie to random sample polls when they call.

The answer "None of your damned business" is mentioned just about every time I hear someone talking about how they were called up on a poll. Another idea is that it's not a poll at all but a recon by someone who either is trying to identity theft a person or is looking to break into the house.

I'm surprised IL was not at the bottom of the list. I live in IL and would be very pleased to move somewhere else. The cuts to education are very depressing and the outlook for the future is not good.

PA was 29. Once I saw they included Camden, NJ in with Philly I knew we were screwed. Camden is consistently one of the 5 most dangerous cities in the US, and every mayor since 2000 has gone to prison!

Through early morning fog I see
visions of the things to be
the pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see...

That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.

Go Nebraska!!! Woot Woot

I find things like this to be very subjective because we're all so different.  I love the midwest and consider Omaha to be one of the best places on earth to live.  I had the misfortune to live in Chicago for a couple years and it was the most miserable place I've ever been.

However, a close friend of mine who grew up in Chicago absolutely hates it here and is in complete misery.  He misses Chicago so much and longs for the day he can move back.

Idaho is MOP at 22. Not terribly surprising. It's a great place to live, but it's a very low income state.

The Las Vegas vs Reno comparison is quite telling. Reno is a lot happier.

That the northern midwest states have so much going for them has got to be one of the best kept secrets around.

People have different preferences so one poll is a pretty poor idea for such a topic.  I would be miserable if I lived in some parts of PA vs. others so to rank happiness of a state is foolish.  Some people like urban life and some like rural life.

Yeah, the economic downturn didn't really hit the midwest very hard.  The unemployment rate in NE is 3.8% and the cost of living is nothing compared to many areas of the country.  Up north in the Dakota's with the oil boom going it's crazy.

My state is about middle. Us Mainers tend to be a fairly indifferent, stoic bunch and don't get too excited or sad about too much. So I'd say the list is a fair assessment.

I don't think we have held that title for some time. And it wasn't the locals getting divorced, but the short residency required for those from other states when other states had strict divorce laws. I hear London is now the divorce capital of the world.

I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die. He wasn't happy.

With everyone around me complaining about the weather and hating on winter (I'm not, for the record, and I love winter) I'm a little surprised Vermont is #5. I'll take it. I love it here!

I've lived in the Chicago land area since 1997.  Best move I've ever made.  Originally from Oklahoma and went to college in Iowa.  Transferred here in '97 for work and have been happy every since.  Are there things that bug me the crap outta me? Absolutely!  But that would happen anywhere.

I think you hit is, though, in comparing you and your friend.  It is all perspective.

Dumbest and most inaccurate poll ever.

Texas at 26?

C'mon....we all know Texas is #1.

Never ask a man if he's from Texas. If he is, he'll tell you. If he's not....there's no need to embarrass him.

Especially when some states concentrate population into one or two urban areas. It's like NYC, you either love it or hate it. Although I wouldn't want to live in Centralia, PA, either. It's been on fire since 1962
