Pro  15655    |  Subject: Dinner last nightDid you do anything special for New Years Eve dinner? We continued a family tradition that we started about 8 years ago. We cooked up 10 lbs. of crab legs and then played dominos until midnight while we talk about the year and look forward to what we have planned in the new year.. Not sure how much longer we can keep the night/tradition going with the kids getting older as they'll surely start to have plans of their own, but it's always a great night for our family. What do you do as a family? |

What was put in front of me looked like this: filet mignon with pomegranite sause, pecorino romano custard, artichokes with homemade aioli and homemade pear tart for desert. I always appreciate the local places that are a little higher price (moderate, more like...) but WONDERFUL food! I had steak that was so tender and buttery, DT had chicken with salami & shrimp with a buttery-alfredo! The littlest one decided she wanted something a little different...and she had formula...instead of her usual formula :-) She of course was ready to eat RIGHT before our food came :-) Happy 2014!! |

But if I'm home, for some reason we usually have Chinese food. I cook. sometimes with a little help from Trader Joe's if I'm lazy. Pot stickers and some stir-fry dishes. Not sure how it got started--we're not Chinese and Chinese/Vietnamese actually celebrate the lunar New Year, which falls later in January or February. But somehow it's become a family custom. Not sure at what point I entered the New Year and definitely didn't eat/drink anything exciting for it this year, but my last leg back was on ANA and they did serve really good Japanese food and wine for dinner. |

Veteran 976 New Hampshire | Subject: RE: Dinner last night My wife and I took our 2 1/2 year old son out to the same restaurant we went to last year on NYE, right around 5pm so we were the only ones there pretty much. It's the same restaurant that we had our wedding rehearsal dinner at, her baby shower and our son's christening. We should be part owners by now, but it's a good place with excellent service and it's nice. He brought half a dozen super hero toy figures with him and was a huge hit with all the waitresses when Batman helped him eat his pasta. Perfect night. |

Then we watched the fireworks as we were driving through the town and headed back the hour drive to our house. Went to a bunco party at a friends place. Pretty boring stuff. |

What do you do as a family? I made gumbo with sausage, chicken, shrimp and crawfish, hoppin' John, and stewed collard greens/kale/mustard greens (per family tradition). My sister and brother in law spent the night, as did two of my son's buddies. We drank a lot of chanpagne (and scotch and martinis) and had some chocolate fondue while the ball dropped. I don't remember the last time the wife and I went out on NYE, other than to someone's house. We like to keep it pretty quiet. Most years, we don't even make it to midnight. |

I made a recipe I found in Runner's World magazine. It had brown rice, red peppers, onions, black eyed peas, rosemary, garlic and ham. Wasn't bad either! And it was very healthy! I always see these receipes in magazines I want to make someday, so going forward I am determined to try to make the ones that look good. |

What do you do as a family? Oh hell yeah!!! I had planned the menu before I knew some friends who keep kosher were planning to stop by for dinner. I had to modify things a little bit-- I found some good chicken andouille sausage and I left the shrimp and crawfish out of the gumbo until after I had already served them. I used a cut up smoked turkey wing in the greens instead of the usual ham hock. The changes weren't noticeable at all (at least not to me). In fact, I'm thinking of starting a line of Kosher Southern specialties called "Moishe's Bayou Cookin'". |

I know it as a Southern thing, but it's definitely spreading. I had to go to three different supermarkets in Brooklyn on Tuesday mornng to find dried black-eyed peas. Everyone was sold out of them. |
