Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Manatee à trois Ummm...I don't think there are charity or lottery spots at 70.3 Worlds. You have to qualify to go--says so on the website. There are challenged athletes but they have almost a two-hour lead on my AG. No, I only qualified once. I was second at Calgary, but that was actually a very early qualifier for 2017, not a last-ditch qualifier for 2016 like I thought when I entered. Kind of stupid--who on earth enters a 5-hour plus race BY MISTAKE?? Then Mom wouldn't let me get out of it because this was her SUMMER ROAD TRIP! Seriously, did it to keep peace in the family. I would have never heard the end of it if I pulled out. Actually I guess it's possible I qualified for 2017 there, if the woman who won didn't want the spot; didn't ask her, or stick around for the roll down. I'm still planning to be in Asia next fall, and it's just too long a trip from here, particularly at that time of year (beginning of our school term). Had already decided that before I raced. Getting three days of leave for Australia (fortunately, it overlaps with a national holiday day here, or it would be four) was pretty epic; I just don't think I could get to the eastern US and back in three days of leave (basically, take a 5-day weekend) and have a meaningful attempt at a race. Will just do my best and that's all that can be done in any race anyway. I don't want to wish a bad race on anyone. Just wish I was starting more MOP. I find it really motivating when I can pass some people on the bike, and I have a feeling that being a relatively weak biker (even after killing myself at it all year, the best women in my AG, and maybe even the next group or two up, will still probably be at least 15 minutes ahead) those chances are going to be few and far between. Plus I'll have the 20-somethings blowing past. I guess, like my mom always yells, just run like hell. |

Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Manatee à trois There isn't a Lottery like with Kona, but likely some other charity type spots. Don't know for sure what will change since the 70.3 moves around. If anyone remembers GatorDeb, she got one of these when it was still in Las Vegas. And it was the championship race, not the 70.3 Silverman revival. Both races are still almost entirely by qualification, just not quite entirely so. |

So, i don't know if you guys saw about the crazy thing that happened in my hometown yesterday - http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/terror-threat-arrest-rcmp-1.3715969 My parents live just down the road and thankfully were far enough away that they were not impacted but it's hit the whole town pretty hard. The guy wasn't from our town but was working at the same company as my Dad but in another location. This seems to be very serious - what a crazy world sometimes ... Scary indeed, the world is a crazy place these days. I'm glad your parents and folks you know are all safe and the guy was quickly caught and controlled. |

Not yet, I have started looking but finding a 52cm at a decent price has been an issue so far. There arent any more of the kids races this year so I do have time. I might try him on my 54 and see if it is a bit of stretch for him or not. If we can work with a 54cm bike there seems to be more available plus it will allow him to grow into it a bit. Plus I could use it too. I am kind of toying with building something with him, this Specalized M2 could be a decent starting point. (M2.JPG) Attachments ---------------- M2.JPG (17KB - 3 downloads) |

In other words, I strongly doubt last place is a valid concern for you. You are very talented in all 3 disciplines and will surely be passing folks along the way. Just have fun, stay positive, enjoy the day, and be your speedy self! |

Veteran 1900 Southampton, Ontario | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Manatee à trois Originally posted by Hot Runner Panic button....Just got the swim waves list for Worlds. 45-49 women start second to last. Only 18-24 women's group is behind us. I've been joking that my goal is to not end up DFL, but now thinking it could be a distinct possibility, especially after the bike. Those young whippersnappers are going to make up the stagger in no time, maybe before I even exit the water. OMG what if that is my claim to fame? I don't think there's quite the drama and glory of being the last finisher at Kona or another big IM event. Probably everyone will already be at the beer tent. I race poorly, I put a lot of stress on myself and generally am not that fast which doesnt help either. After coming out of the water I was basically staggering around because of dizziness I started out on the bike. I was entering into single track after about 1km still slightly off, I did hit a tree pretty good early on but kept going. The course itself was one of the absolute worst I have ever seen in 20+ years of mountain biking, zero flow, and super rough, it left me almost in tears as every bump through my hard-tail mountain bike seemed to be transmitted directly up my spine. I didnt have much of a choice but to take it easy. The run was through swampy crappy terrain and I did slightly twist my ankle at one point. But I pushed on, I knew I was DFL after the horrendous bike and knew I wouldnt be passing anyone on the run as it is typically my weakest discipline. I didnt care, well I did care, but I cared more about pushing past the limitations and finishing it. As it turns out there was one guy behind me. You wont be DFL, race YOUR race and it will always be your own. |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Manatee à trois Originally posted by Hot Runner Just so you didn't MEET him during the run leg of Ironman Western Australia 2014 and marry him before the finish. Then I would truly think you were crazy. (Kingley's a great guy but still, that would be crazy.) BTW any chance you will be in the Mooloolaba area on Sept. 4? We're both crazy enough to have done that, but the logistics would have been difficult. Celebrants (the humans who can officially marry you to each other in Australia) don't really haunt Ironman courses looking for business. I was planning to be there but am now not returning to Indonesia until Sep 2 and it's too close. Many dear friends but none of my athletes will be there (Oscar has had a shyte season, Ironman-wise and otherwise). Do you or anyone you know need simple lodgings? I've a booking for a double with private bathroom in a hostel-type place that's a couple hundred meters away from race central. Yeah ... no way in hell you'll be DFL. NFP ... not fachin' possible! GO HANDS-MARIE!!! My foot is healing. At this point whether it's a soft tissue injury or metatarsal stress fx the treatment is the same. Joint support but not immobilization (boot) necessary unless it gets worse or really persists. If I were actually trained or competitive, some soft tissue injuries can be rehabbed and even minimally run on, but not needed or worth it in my case. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Manatee à trois Geez....wish I had known earlier. Shelled out an arm and a leg for a studio type place about a kilometer away from race HQ. Race HQ was just ridiculous for one person--something like $350 or $375 a night with a 5-night minimum. There is a shuttle from near my place on race morning, though, and the day before. Let me check with a friend who might be coming from Brisbane and might want to stay the weekend. Is the booking transferrable, for what days and how much would it be? (You can PM.) It would be tempting to have it just in case I can't make it back to the other place the night after (or have too much fun at the post-race party)! I didn't mean DFL in terms of time (surely some of the older groups will be slower on average), but my group will physically be some of the last across the line due to how the swim waves are set up. The slower AG have a big head start, and the one AG behind us is younger. Kind of weird how they arranged things--it almost looks like the result of a random draw. I can't see any logic in it--maybe there isn't! I guess the good thing is that the sharks/jellies will probably be satiated by the time my wave swims by. That was actually true at Danang--the pros broke through the swarm of jellies first and some just got incredibly stung up--Caroline Steffen looked like a battered woman the morning after! |

Jellies scare me more than sharks. It goes back to when I was in boot camp and saw a guy get stung in the eye by a jelly fish. My wife worked at Virginia Beach and her issue is sharks, because it was right out of "Jaws" that summer. They had regular shark attacks, but they were not allowed to tell the public. In both cases I'm glad I don't have to deal with either, just extremely cold water. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Manatee à trois OMG Now I have one more thing to be paranoid about. (My Danang RR features multiple stings during the WARMUP, plus a paranoia fit after an older Aussie was talking about getting stung in the mouth. I WALKED the first 150m or so of the swim, not because I could, or because I'm not a good swimmer, but because I was terrified of getting stung in the mouth! ) Okay....calm down....if my goggles are on, they can't get me in the eye. Right?? Sharks at Virginia Beach--Gaaaack! We used to go to Virginia Beach at spring break when I was a kid and I swam there a lot! Yet another reason it's pretty amazing I survived to adulthood. |

They will routinely show pictures of the beach taken by someone in a plane or helicopter and not very far from the swimmers are sharks. We just don't realize how close they are! |
