Deanna is finally off any assistance with her breathing. She was off the
breathing collar yesterday afternoon because she said "It's not helping
anymore". When the tracheotomy is plugged, she can speak. It is a little
difficult to understand because breathing is still a chore for her, but
she can finally get her point across to people in the room. The trache
still has 2 small holes when the large one is plugged, but it is
definitely understandable.
She seemed to be very interested in the
“Hell’s Kitchen” reality show winner when Jamie brought that up, but
seemed to be disappointed with the winner. Deanna was back to being
Deanna. Earlier in the day, she had asked for blue Gatorade. She cannot
drink it yet, because of the trache, but she made every effort to do so.
She can use a sponge to drink it. With the trache, she would aspirate any
large amount of liquid she consumed.
They are planning on moving her to a
step down unit soon, so she will be out of ICU. Deanna knows exactly what
she wants, telling her visitors when to give her a drink, lower the head
of her bed, bring an extra pillow, or even leave the room as I was told to
do. Later to find out that she just had to ask her mom a personal
question.
She began to sleep during the afternoon visit and awakened
suddenly. She plugged her trache and said she was having “some crazy
dreams”… about “people with different ailments”. These are all pretty
cognitive thoughts, so I think any major brain injury is pretty much out
of mind. I told her it’s probably the medication she had been on for a
while and she said “I told the doctors ‘no more drugs’ ” .
She also asked where she lived because she was concerned she had just signed a year lease with her landlord. It is great to see Deanna recovering so quickly the last couple days, but she still has quite a way to go. Her fine motor
skills need some help and rehabilitation will start pretty soon, I assume.
Keep Deanna in your thoughts and prayers as she is about to go through a
very trying time.
