Jeepguy2358 - 2009-12-16 6:08 PM Hey everyone.  I'm back!  I've spent the past three weeks studying for an advance PGA Certification and just finished it with by passing a couple tests today!  I am now a PGA Certified Professional.  There are only 2% of the PGA professionals in the world that have my credetials now.

Hope everyone is doing well.  I just wanted to check in and let everyone know I am still alive.  I'll check things out and get back into the swing of things over the next couple of days.  Hope everyone is well!  I'll post my bio when I get a few seconds!

Congrats, we going to see you at the Kohler next year?

When Sam and I get back to traveling/playing, that place is #1 on the list

Ohhhh I've been drooling over those courses for 10 yrs.  One of these days!

Hey everyone~

Finally, my bio..........

My name is Chris. This is really just my 2nd year.  2008 races did not count since they were just kind of a dare.

FAMILY STATUS: Married four years, no kids, I've got a crazy dog (jack russell) and a fat orange cat.

WORK:  Head Golf Professional at a private country club in Greenville, SC

PAST RACES:  2008 - 1 XTERRA tri, 1 sprint;  2009 - 1 international, 2 sprints, and 1 HIM (Augusta)

2010 "A" RACE:  Ironman Louisville, other races - couple 5k's, half mary, two sprints and one international

CURRENT TRAINING: Working on slowly building my base for the season to avoid injury.

If I had to pick a strength, I would say it is swimming.  I've been swimming my entire life.  Biking and running are by far my weakest, but I am working hard to improve them and they are getting better.  After Louisville, I may switch back to doing some XTERRA races since that was where my love for biking began.

Looking forward to another great year in this MG.  Everyone here is so helpful, encouraging and able to provide exceptional feedback on every aspect of tri's and at every level.

Hey Chris...seems like we have some things in common.  I was born in Greenville and lived on the Saluda River until moving to Atlanta as a kid.  Had family in Greenville and Piedmont.

I also did Augusta HIM...or rather I should say, Augusta did me!!

Congrats again on the PGA distinction.

Plainsman AU - 2009-12-17 7:21 AM In response to SUZY's question ... what are you most proud of in 2009 season:

Last October (16th to be exact), I told my wife I wanted to do a HIM.  I knew that would be a stretch, since I literally had never run over a mile in my life, and I did not know how to technically swim at all.  Maybe could swim 50 yards.  When I made the commitment, I really had no idea that I could stick with the training and get it done.  My goal was not to be a triathlete, but just train for the race to say I did it.  I DID IT.  6hrs and 27 min.  The running sucked.

Something amazing has happened, and now I am hooked on this stuff.  I don't know if it is really the training or the races or just the cool people you meet along the way. (excuse me while I wipe the tear off my face)

In response to Suzy's question...

I am most proud of the level of dedication I was able to keep in training in 2009.  In my current position at work, I am there during crazy hours (all weekends and holidays).  Because of this, other than this group, I had noone to there pushing me, holding me accountable, etc.  It was just me.  That is why this group is important to me.  Even though, there isn't any body there waiting for me at 6am to run, I know if I missed a scheduled workout, there would be someone here encouraging me along, or kicking my butt out the door.

Sam and Tony - I have never played the Kohler courses, but would love to.  Two of the facilities I want to play are the Kohler courses and the courses at Bandon Dunes in Oregon.  I am playing Augusta National this spring, so I can cross that off my list.

In case anyone needs a little incentive to sign up for the Augusta HIM, I will throw in a round of golf in the Greenville area if anyone is interested.  It's only two hours from Augusta.

wife's grandparents are from Saluda.  they still have a lake house up there.  wonderful place.  about 5 years ago i went into the only gas station by the lake house and asked where the atm is.  i might as well asked if they could tell me when the next rocket to mars left.

Went to the bookstore and bought "Chi Running'" today.  Anyone got any experience with this?  Hoping might help with the ITB maybe?  Thought it would be interesting concept to try.

I have the DVD if you want to borrow it...  actually, it is pretty simple concept... don't run - have a multi-mile controlled fall...

Is the DVD any more helpful than the book?  If so, I might want to take a look.

I'm reading the book now.  Visuals do help a lot.  I've been going on to youtube, there is a lot there.  So far part of what I like most about the book is the mental approach to running.  In the beginning of the book they talk about how kids/toddlers run with better technique than we do and it's true (according to the book).  I've actually been using my son as a visual guide.  The more I read the more I think about my old 5th grade cross country coach teaching us to heel strike during long distance runs.. I'm trying to remember the reasons why he taught us to heel strike vs what comes natural to us.

Chris:

Augusta HIM is my A race for the 200 season. If you are doing it again then I look forward to seeing you there. I don't play golf though. I have tried about 6 times. It just isn't my thing. I live off of a TPC course here in Raleigh though.

Augusta is on my short list as well.  Will see how the beginning of the season goes first.  LOL, traveling to Texas and New Hampshire already this year for races.

We plan on doing the Black Fly tri in NH, Friday 4 mile Time Trial, Saturday sprint and Sunday Olympic.  It is at a resort and they have kids camps so we can drop the kids off there on our way to the race and pick them up after.

Good morning,

4 pages to catch up on so forgive me as I jump from topic to topic.

Garmin times and races:  What I do for a race is mount my 305 on my bike during pre-race set up and turn it on to aquire satellite.  It has the auto pause feature activated so the timer doesn't start until I move the bike.  Too many times I have been burned by forgetting to hit the start button.  Then I have the wrist strap in my running shoes so I remember to transfer the 305.  Most of photos starting the run have either the garmin in my hands or I am looking down trying to get the darn thing on.   For my IM I am planning on borrowing the husband's Garmin EDGE for the bike and having my 305 for the run.  That is providing I decide to wear a Garmin at all for the run.  At this point in my training I don't modify my run based on pace heart rate, basically I am left running on fumes. (obviously something I am working on)  I've had 2 miserable long race runs this year, my HIM and the run relay on an Ironman, both of which were made worse by having my Garmin telling me how slow I am going. Don't know if I really want instant feedback on my runs.

HappyChick - last year I was in the same situation with a possible olympic 3 weeks prior to a half. I did it and it was a great decision. Didn't race full out but it let me get some practice in with transitions, work on my nutrition, and overall build confidence and work out some of the nerves.  I would advise doing the olympic vs the sprint. Sprints don't translate at all to half iron distances.  Even the transitions have a different mentality.   Go long girl!   When it gets closer to HIM time we'll bombard you with advise on PACING YOURSELF!

Tony - where is SAVAGEMAN for you 2010 list?  Are you wimping out on me?  Actually I can't give you too much crap (but always just a little) b/c I'm not doing Savage due to Augusta the next weekend. Very sad though since I've had such wonderful experiences the last 2 years.  My hubby will be there again. Gotta defend his age group 2nd place!!!

Bit of a frustrating start to my day.  I managed to drag myself out of bed this morning (I am not a morning person so this was an achievement in itself, especially during the winter monthsSmile), drove to the gym to get in a short swim and found out the pool was closed - some kind of chlorine issue.  The frustrating part was that they didn't even mention it when I checked in at the front desk!  I got into the locker room, got all my stuff ready, and someone in there mentions that the pool has been closed all morning (she had come in for a swim too).  So I went to check with the lifeguards and sure enough, no swimming allowed.  Unfortunately I didn't have any other workout clothes with me, so had to pack things back up and drive back home without a workoutFrown.  Hopefully I can work something into the schedule tonight.

I'm off to catch up - missed about 10 pages since yesterday!

Wow Augusta is looking like a good turnout! As far as an Olympic before a 1/2 IM, I am doing the Nations Tri 2 weeks before Augusta. The interm 2 weeks will be a controled taper. I will probably not go all out in DC, but nerves and adernelin may change that.

In case anyone needs a little incentive to sign up for the Augusta HIM, I will throw in a round of golf in the Greenville area if anyone is interested.  It's only two hours from Augusta.

Sign me up.  I will be registering for Augusta after the first of the year...as soon as some $$$$ comes in.

Awesome.

Steve

Doug:  A number of us will be doing the Nation's, me included.  Maybe meeting up beforehand (or after if you are willing to wait for me at the finish) would be possible...
