I'll start by bragging on my hubby, then I'll post on the discussions. My boy did so well this weekend. He set a PR on the bike and the run. His bike was 26.1 miles distance with a 21mph average and a time of 1:15. He averaged 211watts and I'm told that is really strong power! I told him he gets to keep the Quadzilla nickname. His 10k run was a HUGE PR of 46minutes!!! I am super duper proud of him! Great job by your other half on his double PR. To have that kind of power on the bike and still be able to run a PR for the 10 k....sounds like you have been training him right. Steve |

I enjoyed catching up with all of the threads......Nice job to ALL of you!! This weekend's swim meet was amazing. My little speech went over well - the amount of support I received was overwhelming! And the grief I caught for running between trials and finals was funny. Ran 10 on Saturday, and almost 4 in a pickin' hurricane on Sunday. unreal. Appreciate the positive comments on swim officiating. It is lots of hours, all volunteer, but I enjoy it. I'm on deck for the little tiny kids all the way up to and including Michael Phelps, Natalie Coughlin, etc. I really enjoy it. AND, my 16 year y/o came in second last night in the 50 free.....22.46 seconds!! WHEEE!!! Who says referees can't dance on deck?!? Taper time......my plane leaves in 4 days......can someone please ensure that the weather is nice and cool in Boston? Thanks. I can barely get a 25 done in that amount of time.... |

Master 2436![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Apex, north carolina | Subject: RE: swbkrun Mentor Group- CLOSED FOR BUSINESS!!!Congratulations to all the racers this weekend. I'm sure I'll be spending the better part of my day ready race reports. Great news to Roni and Suzy out there using those feet. Hope everything continues to heal and improve. Great discussions about swimming. I'm soaking it all in. Cadances - I agree with the majority of what has been said. I've learned the hard way that pushing a big gear and low cadance is a recipe for disaster and doesn't always deliver the speed you want either. One little tip that I didn't see posted was this: during a race, be sure to spin high for the last few miles coming back in. This helps get the blood flowing through the legs and preps them nicely for the run. I've been spending lots of time in the granny gear and it really helps when you need to power up a hill or switch to the big gear for a boost. Find the cadance/power balance but riding should be like running, you can judge exerction by ability to talk and if your form starts to drop then you need to gear down. You shouldn't have to lean hard from side to side or bounce your upper body up and down. Also, if you stand while climbing or sprinting, be sure to "paint your butt" with your seat; I.O. W. move your bike back and forth, not your body. Trina - how are you feeling today? You said you got hit in the kidney correct? Is it stil bruised? You arent peeing blood are you? Listen to your body and give it the time it needs to heal. To hell with HTFU - that only applies to running in the rain or cold or non-injury related conditions. |

From what I gather most people have a few crashes after changing to clipless pedals. My last crash wouldn't have been bad at all had it not been for my husband's front wheel. Tracy - No blood in pee this morning. My husband kept applying ice to my back last night off and on....he said it looked like the wheel actually hit the muscle that runs alongside my spine, and that it probably missed my kidney. Thank goodness. I think I'll go for a 1000 yard swim today and get some rest. |

Pro 4100![]() ![]() ![]() Wherever the trail takes me, WA. | Subject: RE: swbkrun Mentor Group- CLOSED FOR BUSINESS!!!moxie - 2010-04-11 7:50 PM I leave for the weekend and there are 18 pages to read! Holy crap! lol Ok, first ever Tri done and I gotta say, I am kind of impressed with myself. I feel like with more training I might actually be able to be good at this stuff. I came in 7/16 in my age group and 189/300 overall. Honestly, I didn't think I'd even be able to pull this off. I really thought I would blow up on the run and have to walk. Even with a ginormous (WTF is THAT!) kind of hill to climb up for the first .5 of the run, I kept on chugging. That first mile was 11:35 minutes of torture. lol Anyhow, I feel great! I can't wait to do my next one. My focus is now shifting to running and biking more. I can swim the distance easily, I'm just slow, and until I get a coach or the time to invest in technique, my time would be best spent getting more speed in the bike and run. I was just 8 minutes off of 4th place. 21 minutes off of 1st. I've got some work to do! Her Race Report is up... Sneaky! http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=203187&posts=2#M2785123 |

Veteran 207![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: swbkrun Mentor Group- CLOSED FOR BUSINESS!!!GoFaster - 2010-04-12 5:52 AM Thanks Ryan - but if you're going to pace yourself the PM only gives you your avg while riding, so is that the magic number to train with? (yes, I know I need to do some reading)Â What would happen if you go climb some mountains and are descending for 20+ minutes, doesn't that mess your averages up? Yep, the only meter out there that gives you real-time NP is the Joule (I think... haven't seen one in action), but AP is fine to race with. I think your best strategy, especially for HIM and IM racing, is to try to keep a nice, steady output anyway, so (hopefully) your NP and AP are pretty close. In fact, the ratio of the two (NP/AP) is called your variability index (VI... yay! more acronyms!), and for long course racing, it's generally recommended to keep it as close to 1 as possible. But back to AP vs. NP... When I race, I'll monitor my AP from time to time to make sure I'm close to my target number. However, I mainly pay attention to my real time watts on the hills because, as you mentioned, your AP is often not the best reflection of your effort. In a HIM, for example, I usually shoot for about 78-80% of my FTP, and I'll watch on the hills to make sure I'm pacing myself; I definitely want to limit the time that I'm above threshold. |

Let's see if I can get the link to work - http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=203273&posts=1&start=1. Bottom line - I had a great race, met my goal, and set a new PR by 15 minutes . Very happy with the way it went. My legs are a little stiff and sore today (glad I took the day off work) so I don't know if I'll get any training done today - maybe just some yoga to stretch things out. Off to catch up with posts! Did you race this weekend? From the sounds of your RR you were just out there killing time? Was it an actual race? my plan was to suck and then cry about it like a little girl to give you a false sense of hope. is it working? Sort of... I recognize you probably got a few tips from Potts...but remember he came out of the water 2nd and finished 9th in Kona. i wouldn't put alot of stock in his finishing kick.... Just remember when you come out of the water ahead of me, you know I'll be lurking. When you least suspect it, I'll blow by you on the bike and throw a CO2 cartridge into your front tire. |
