OK, I'm the idiot, but he's ... well ... he's a special kind of ... special. *cautiously raises hand* I don't like Nutella either! Actually, I don't like anything chocolate - I know, I know, I should hang my head in shame or something, but I love just about everything else that's bad for me, caramel, ice cream, candies, cookies (ZOMG - Tony made ah-MAY-zing oatmeal cookies last night & whoever comes up with these "makes 36" weird numbers clearly never took into consideration the amount of cookie dough batter that is consumed before baking said cookies), pie, etc... I did much of my training solo until I met my training partner. I'm still okay to train alone; I like the time to myself. I have a question for Tour of Sufferlandia experts. Most of the rides are on Trainerroad; I realize the videos 'make the ride' but it is possible to do them without the visual? Can't see shelling out a bunch more cash right now... I do have a friend who I got into triathlons last year and we would do the odd run, mountain bike and swim once per week which was good but he is injured now and this year might be out for him. I also ran with his wife a number of years ago which really helped on those long wintery long runs but ya, 99% after 8pm on the treadmill or trainer in the basement. I am an introvert with a capital "I" so that works just fine for me. (not sure what happened with the quote thing there) Originally posted by brigby1 I'm solo for the vast majority of my training as well. Same here - 99% of my training is solo. When we lived in Chicago, I could convince my hubby to go on early morning & weekend runs & rides with me, but he now starts work at 5:30am and has decided that he's not doing triathlons any more, just run races so he's not really doing any training. I do still meet up on Saturdays for a group ride during warmer weather, but otherwise it's all me. |

I am very much introverted, in both life and in training - so when I found other gals who would train with me, at my speeds, and be consistent - it was something I worked at to keep. I still do races with one of them (she's on BT so I get to keep up with her training) but I really miss our runs together. A few years ago, on the spur of the moment I joined a local marathon training group. I met a few gals who I really clicked with and we ran probably 10-12 weeks worth of long runs together. But at some point, they decided they wanted to run at a faster pace and I got frustrated with all the effort I was putting in to join the group --- only to be running alone again. I still sort of keep in touch with them, but it really rubbed the the wrong way - not that they wanted to run faster, but the way it happened. Anyway, my point was that local training groups might be a good source for new training buddies, but it's hit and miss just like everything else. Edited by lisac957 2016-01-07 9:17 AM |

I am amazed at the variety of trainer/app options. I know, its crazy when you start looking at what is available and what others do, how many options there are to choose from. I can see where it can become overwhelming. I think for most people it comes down to going to the level of technology you are comfortable with coupled with price. Lots available for the bike but seemingly nothing for a treadmill. I am still looking for a ANT+ app that will work with my foot cadence sensor and HR strap that will display on my PC similar to what is on trainer road. Are you happy with your foot cadence sensor? I have a Garmin 920xt which seems to track my cadence but sometimes I wonder how accurate it is. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 I can't keep up! Had a busy two days and amazed that there are about 19 pages of stuff I haven't read! Will try to contribute something productive in the next few days......Know I have a good source for core exercises for triathletes somewhere and someone asked about it. Sitting in the airport about to commence "World's Longest Commute" back to Saigon. Another solo trainer here. Last year and for part of the year before that I had two running buddies a few days a week, but they were not very consistent, due to illness, injury, motivation, or some combo thereof. One hasn't been doing much running at all this year, and the other moved back home (to South Africa) last spring. So back to running solo. To be honest, it's what I prefer. When I run with others, I always feel like they start too fast, then slow down. I tend to start REALLY slowly, especially early AM, and start feeling good only 30-40 minutes into the run! I like biking with others but have no one to bike with in Saigon since my bike buddy moved to Saudi Arabia a few years ago due to her husband's job. And swimming...the only master's group in Saigon moved across town about five years ago. So it's all solo, all the time, pretty much. I guess I deal with it with a combination of structured workouts (one reason I got a coach) and imaginary training buddies. Hard to explain that one--I imagine the woman running ahead of me down the street is (insert world-class triathlete) and I'm going after her at Kona; my old HS buddies are swimming in the next lane; I'm talking with my old bike buddy on a ride or imagine I'm on a favorite loop in Oregon. (I have a good imagination.) Videos are great for the trainer. Just got a power meter so I can look at that, too. I do train with a master's swim group and bike with a local club sometimes when in Oregon, but I think my solo training is often higher-quality, and more relaxing, as I can just completely focus on my workout and not socializing with someone else or having to adjust what I'm doing to meet their needs. As for vices: Coffee, yes. Nutella, yes, occasionally. Poptarts--sorry, Yanti. Nope. My substitute vice is "Cinnamon Chip Bread" from a local bakery in Oregon. ETA: Here's the core stuff--easy to use. Just follow the video and try to ignore the fact that the lady's all chipper and smiling while you writhe in agony on the floor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wGgCiX6mPI I also made my logs public again (to logged-in members only) but it will just have total time/distance, not workout specifics as per agreement with my coach. I had a 920 with the heart rate run monitor and did not think it was accurate at all indoors or for cadence or distance without a foot pod. The first time I rant with it indoors on a track it said I was running a 6:40 mile which would not even be close. I don't think I could run a 6:40 mile pace for 100 meters. Thanks for the info Darren - going to check out the TR & SF apps now, any thoughts on when/if the guys at TR will have the missing workout from SF? If there is a new vid, hoping it's better than the last bunch were. Kind of disappointed with them. Why didn't you like the videos? I was looking at getting the pack because I've got a 10% discount after buying elements of style video, of which I haven't used yet :/ |

We've been running together since 2007 and trained with her for 4 of my 5 marathons (and same for her) do you have training friends? Have you had to deal when the moved/left/stopped training with you? I went through this twice with good training buddies moving across the country. I won't lie, it really sucked and I really miss them! Anyway, my point was that local training groups might be a good source for new training buddies, but it's hit and miss just like everything else. haha! |

I'd actually be ok with this. Some of the targets on TR are borderline insane. Anyone who does Revolver X 2 at 100% of TR's targets needs to retest their FTP. I was only on TR for a couple weeks awhile back. Did they change HHNF? When I did it, they hardly matched up the changes in effort. Particularly in the early goings of both intervals, where there were surges. They also had a significant mismatch from interval 1 to 2 in that everything for 2 was ramped up harder. Overall I think it was about 5% higher. Too much in my opinion. I think Revolver went at ~135% for the intervals. Actually got close to that once, before TR existed. I almost died on it. Not something I'd want to repeat. Hitting or just breaking 120% is fine for triathletes in that workout. |

I don't know if that will still happen now, but don't think it would take them too long even if it isn't. If there is a new vid, hoping it's better than the last bunch were. Kind of disappointed with them. Do As You're Told had the efforts too short and too high up. More of an anaerobic workout. I had to spike well past the top of my Z5 to get anything out of that workout. The profile of The Best Thing In The World looks like it will have the same issues (haven't ridden it yet). There are a couple sections you're holding strong and attacking out of it, but it looks like the emphasis is on sprints/attacking. There isn't enough of the strong holding in this vid. Not like in Nine Hammers or A Very Dark Place. If you really go after it they would be rather hard, but type of development from it as triathletes isn't quite what we're looking for. To Get To The Other Side is only a moderate intensity workout. Not really what we're looking for. I back down on some of the others, but that's my choice. It's still really easy to get amped up and go very hard to them. I don't know if it will be with this. Looks like there is a lot of talking and less on the music with it. Have to try it through some time to be sure. It might end up being ok, but only ok. Edited by brigby1 2016-01-07 10:53 AM |

I've read that cycleops is even worse. Can't remember which workout someone was referring to, but it was one of the ones with 20 min intervals. Cycleops had RPE of 7 set at around the 105% mark, and the video asked to do the 20 min intervals at 7.5, which bumped it up to 110%. If you could manage that, then your ftp is wrong. |

I've completed revolver at 100% of it's targets, and they are insanely high for what would normally be a great VO2 workout. I'd do well to ride an hour of Z2 after that much less the same workout again. It's an anerobic workout on steroids (I'll be doing said workout in about 30 minutes...hooray!). HHNF as TR has the targets listed is impossible if your FTP is accurate. I mean look at the profile on Sufferfest's site: The first 20 minute alone is insane. You'd have to have insane VO2 to threshold curve to be able to spike going into it, hold FTP for ~6 minutes and then do the rest of it well into VO2 range. The second 20 minute enters impossible.
