Whenever I see someone wearing HIM or IM clothing, I always ask them about it. I don't necessarily ask them about their performance (because I assume they completed it), but more about their experience there.

Personally, I wouldn't wear it...but that's just me. Almost seems like false advertising. No offense.

Since it's not specific to the race, nor a "finishers" item, I would totally wear it.  Without knowing your story, if I saw you out wearing this hat I would think you were simply involved with Ironman 70.3 races in some way (training, racing, volunteering, had a friend who raced, etc).  I might ask you if you had done a race or if you were training for one.

Here's my thoughts - We buy brand name clothing on a regular basis.  If you are wearing IM clothing, no big deal... in fact I say go for it if it motivates you to train harder.  By buying name brand merch (of whatever type: hat, shirt, wetsuit) you are supporting that business, even if it is simply to promote the companies mission/vision.

There is a dual line here, unfortunately.  You can buy a football (insert sport of choice) jersey or Olympics merch and not have even attended the games, let alone watched it on TV.  But it's voodoo to wear merch for a race that you didn't complete?

I understand that IM/HIM is a significant acheivement and hope to be there one day myself.  I do agree that you should only wear 'finisher' attire if you finish.  But to say that a person cannot wear a BRAND is dumb.

I would wear it.  Most have no clue about 70.3 - and will simply ask.  You can then say it is the distance of a half-IronMan competition.
If they question further - yes, you have done one but were not able to finish.  But you now wear the hat as a reminder to work harder for your next attempt (on xx xx xx).

By the way, I like the look of the visor!

What does it matter what others think?  I would say from your description you suffered enough to do what ever you want with the hat.

Maybe could answer the question yourself after contemplating the inevitable "how did you do" question that wearing it will bring...

your asking the wrong question.

A better question is, "why did you buy it?"  Answer that for yourself and you'll have your answer as to weather or not you should wear it.

I would not wear it! Big difference in wearing an NFL jersy as a fan and a visor for a race that you did not finish.

Explain what the BIG difference is?

I have a IMKY visor I actually found in the parking lot (while cheering for someone at the race) and I washed it and wear it a lot. I have never done nor am I planning to do IMKY but it was a free hat so why do I care. If someone asked me how I did, I would say. I didnt, I like the hat.
It is clothing people... get over it! and It is JUST LIKE wearing a NFL Jersey...

I push my 2 month old son in a "BOB Ironman" stoller, it even has the mdot on it. He has NEVER did and as far as I know does not plan on doing one (mainly because he cannot talk). So is he tempting the IM gods???? whatever....

I have all kinds of cool 100 mile running stuff from wife and I wear it all the time. I have no dream of doing a 100 mile ultra

The answer to the question 'how did you do?' is "Well, I DNF'd this one but I'm signed up to try it again."

Maybe this should be sent to the countries that get the pre-printed Super Bowl champs tshirts for the team that lost?  They dont seem to mind   Personally, I would be too pizzed at myself to wear it til i got revenge, but thats just me.  In the end its just a hat and if you are ok with it, go nuts.

I bought this EXACT visor at this EXACT expo before this EXACT race!
I wore it DURING the race, BEFORE I'd finished my first 70.3!
Gasp!

Here I am, wearing it DURING the race!
The IM Gods must have been pizzed I wore it before finishing a 70.3 becuase they sent the severe storm that called the race and I didn't get to finish. Learned my lesson!!!!

But in all seriousness... I would see anyone wearing it as supporing the distance: be it as a finisher, an athlete in training, a volunteer, or just a general fan of 70.3.

I have a surplus of race T-shirts and have been ordering them in different sizes now to give to my boyfriend, brother, mom, dad, etc. Is this a grave insult to all triathletes everywhere? Or just a way to get free T-shirts into the hands of people who will actually wear them? You decide. Or not.

Thank you all for your responses.  I am going to continue to wear the visor, mainly as a reminder to myself of that fateful day, and that I at least had the guts to toe the line.  I will go back and do the race again and I will CRUSH the course!!!  It was a great experience, looking back on it, and I'm glad I had the opportunity to try.  If I'm asked about the visor, I will be able to admit that I started the race, but DNF'd.  I'm not happy about it, but it's the truth.

Do not wear the visor. It takes away from your Karma pool as well as diminishes the accomplishments of people who actually finished.

The visor, hat, shirt is all like a medal. If you didn't earn it, you don't wear it.

I saw some really cool IM hats at the Kansas 70.3 a couple weeks ago. I know which one's I'd love to wear, but I wouldn't even try them on. I am hoping to race IM Louisville this summer. I say hoping because if I say I am, that is just asking for a wreck, injury, any bad result so I say hoping. I am signed up I am training, but until I FINISH that race, I am not an Ironman. That being said, I am proudly wearing my 70.3 shirt today as I have FINISHED that distance.

Good luck to all.

...okay. I'm just *now* seeing this...but I can understand where you're coming from.

Last year I did IMKS 70.3, too...and was actually the last person they allowed onto the run course off of the bike. Literally, the inflatable arch was coming down and I just barely squeaked under it. Both the day and the course were something fierce that year--remember that even if you had made the bike cutoff, you would've been pulled from the course because of the weather.

Like you, I got a visor. And I've actually worn it multiple times. I trained for the race. I did my best out there, and that's all I could ask for given the circumstances we were given that day. I actually wore the participant shirt (you know, the one with "FINISHER" emblazoned across the back...now that is bad karma!) for the first time a few weeks ago while on the trainer. I'm still tinkering with the fact of changing it to read "UNFINISHED BUSINESS."

I later went on to successfully complete the spirit of racine HIM later that summer, but Kansas still left a bad taste in my mouth.

I say wear the visor. Let it serve as a reminder to you to give everything you've got into your training for future races.

wear it , who the F cares really? I have a bunch of stuff (shirts, caps, socks) with the Mdot logo that some of my athletes or family have given me over the years and I wear those even when I've never done an IM cuz I don't care what others think

How exactly does someone wearing corporate logo merchandise diminish the accomplisment of another?

Do they add ime to your official finish time everytime someone violates your rules?

Do they discount the hours you spent training, the sacrifices you made because someone wears a visor?

Please. Enlighten me.

BTW I've been wearing an Timex Ironman watch for well over ten years now, probably been through 4-6 of them. My heartfelt apologies to anyone whose accomplishments I diminish everytime I look to see the time.

I would wear it.  You made it there, you tried and well ... it didn't work out.  It's not like you never entered and aren't training.  Sometimes things happen - and it's not like it was a DNS.

I probably wouldn't wear the shirt for that one - but I'd wear that visor (like others have noted it's not race specific).  You're still training and you have goals to finish it.

Just my 0.02$

P.S. Like others I have IM branded stuff - watch, sunglasses, etc.  Doesn't mean I ever have the intention of tackling that distance.  It just means that I happen to like those particular items.  (And Timex and IM teamed up...)

Slight Hijack: I have a question - so they have the expo the day before - and you can buy race branded stuff.  But you probably shouldn't because it will mess with your karma for race day.  Can you buy the stuff after the race or do you have to choose to make the karmic plunge before you even make the attempt at the distance?  (Doing my first HIM this summer - and I know I'm going to want something to mark the achievement - but my karma can be precarious sometimes - so what should I do?)

The first year that Louisville had IMKY, I bought a cycling jersey as a gift for my then boyfriend. Never thought a thing about it. We went on a two day bike tour, and I packed the jersey for him for the ride back. About every third person would ask him how he did in IM. Needless to say he wasn't real happy with me. I, however, found it hilarious!!

That's the reason why I voted to not wear it.

IF someone were to ask about it... would you really want to have to respond that you DNFed and why you DNFed?

Eh... but honestly, people rarely if ever ask about the gear you are wearing... so it really probably would matter either way.

I personally would not wear it, simply because it would remind me what I did not do... but then again, it could be a great reminder to motivate me to train harder!

In the end, do what you are comfortable with doing. Either way, it's a nice visor.

if i bought it you can be sure i would be wearing it. it doesnt say race finisher anyway (does it?)

and if you cant take the time to explain to someone your DNF, you have no buiss racing anyway.
its a part of triathlon, or any race for that matter. it happens, it sucks, but it happens, you deal with it and move on.

i have t-shirts from races i have not done, ones i have worked at, ones i have photographed at, and ones i have no idea where they came from, they are shirts, and free, and frankly i am going to wear them all.

Here's what I think

1.  It's OK for people to say he shouldn't wear it

2.  It's OK for people to say he should wear it

After all, he asked for opinions.  What I don't get is why people in camp number 1 or 2 think it's OK to jump on people in the other camp, to tell them their "opinion" is wrong.

Even out the karma.  Wear the visor and enjoy it.  Also take your race number and sharpie a big DNF across it and stick it right over your pile of tri stuff - for next year.
