Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED "Cold weather gear" here (that comes out maybe 2 days a year) consists of a single pair of capri-length tights and one long-sleeve tech shirt with a zipper top that I can pull down and sleeves I can roll up when I get warm after 5-10 minutes. Yes, you can hate me. But you might not enjoy trying to do a tempo run or long brick with heat index pushing 120. That would be our "spring" weather in April and May. |

108 Jacksonville, Florida | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Originally posted by Hot Runner I'll take "cold" over 85*+ & 65%+ humidity any day of the week. We've had an unusually cold stretch here (just like the rest of the east coast I suppose). Most years, a cold snap might keep me off the road for a few days but then temps get back to the 60's or higher. I like colder weather so I've enjoyed it overall, but no so much for bike rides. Good news is I had a GREAT run for 18.5/20 miles today. Bad news? I made the mistake of looking at Training Peaks for next week and I'm going 22 on Saturday. The silver lining? NO HILLS!!! |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Ugh....this is what's really giving me pause about full IM. Never thought I'd say it, but the run! The idea of a 3.8 km swim, unless we are talking some sort of big shore break situation or sharks or icy water, doesn't bother me at all. I am not super fast but I have been a distance swimmer since I was a tween and can keep going at a decent clip for 2-3 hours if needed. The bike would have scared me five years ago, but not now. Just like a long day on a bike tour. But the run......I have not done a marathon in--I think--18 years now, nor any training run or race leg over about 2:15. I think that a 2-hour run, actually anything over about 90 minutes, is "long". Keep thinking about what a 3-hour run might feel like here, or a four-hour plus run anywhere. Long runs were long enough when I was young and fast and a 20-mile run was a matter of 2:20 or something at a pace so fast I could not maintain it for probably one mile now. And then there is the small matter of the 112 mile bike preceding it. OMG. |

Veteran 2441 Western Australia | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED I survived the hills and the heat But I will say that it was the hardest "run" I have ever done. The kilometre that included the very steep hill took me 24 minutes to complete - I have to get faster on hills. |

The kilometre that included the very steep hill took me 24 minutes to complete - I have to get faster on hills. We have a local half marathon that goes up a VERY steep hill for just about 1 1/2 miles. I have friends that refuse to walk; however, I've walked at least part of it every time I've done the race, and I pass people while walking while they are still running. There are hills and then there's HILLS (which is what you experienced today). Sometimes the terrain is just so unusual that preparing for it is almost impossible. I read Dion Leonard's account of a 36-hour, 100 mile race he did in Hawaii last week. It was 5 20-mile loops, and his fourth loop was well over 7 miles because of the terrain. The percentage of finishers is less than 35%. These are hard core ultramarathoners who do these 200 mile races across deserts, yet the terrain still is too much of a challenge for many. So, well done, you! |

There is no question in my mind that if you decided to do an iron distance race, you would have an impressive time. But if you don't have the want to do that distance, the whole experience is just horrible. If you did decide to do it, I think it would be great to follow your race, because I am sure that I would be wowed by your time. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED My thought is I probably wouldn't know if I liked that distance until I tried it. It's less the race day and more the reality of training for it here in the tropics (particularly the run--I detest treadmills and they don't agree with my body, so we'd be talking long runs outside) that scares me. Endurance is my forte and I'm really good at holding a steady pace for a long time; tend to really struggle with the high intensity of sprint and sometimes Only (cramping and especially nausea). Those issues are a lot less with HIM most of the time if I pace properly. I would definitely like to do a full IM at some point; I think I wouldn't know until afterwards if that would be a "one and done" bucket list kind of thing, or something I'd want to do more in the future. I think I would probably do well if I was properly prepared and no unforeseen issues with illness, nutrition, etc. Mentally it is easier if I think of it more like a long hike--I have done plenty of 12-hour days on the trail. Debating maybe trying an iron-length Aquabike (either as a race or in training) this summer, at least to get a feel for how I might feel after riding 180 km. |

Longest I go in training for an IM is 2:30 as well. Proper training and you would have no problem. |

When I trained for IM Boulder, my coach broke my long runs up. 1 in the morning, 1 in the afternoon, and an evening run or 11-13 miles in the morning and 6 in the evening. He does that with all of his athletes, not just the pretend runners like me. He has about 5 who have Kona qualified so it does work. |
