SSMinnow - 2010-04-12 2:21 PM OOPS! Fixed!

Let's talk hyrdration systems on the bike for a minute.....I'm looking for a frount mount that holds as much liquid as it can yet it isn't a total pain to take off after a day of riding.  I have the Profile on my Seven and like it, but it requires way too much filling on long rides and I am less than talented at doing this on the fly.....given the size of my bike the Speedfill will not work as a secondary system....throw all ideas and pics my way....need to order this asap!

fattyfatfat - 2010-04-12 12:51 PM dear brandfirst-marketing:

i have this awesome product i'd like to market.

can you tell me what time you will be back in the office ON MAY 14th

thank you.

Neverreach - can hold a lot of fluid.  I had one for a oly and it was way too big but I bet it would be OK for HIM.  You have to be careful if you chage a flat by turning your bike over.  It can also get a few harrassing comments...referring to it as a hemorrhoid or something like that.  A non tri friend asked me if I had a urinal attached to my bike!!  It did work good though and holds a decent amount of fluid.

My 2 cents, I have been using the Bontrager Aero Pack, love it love it love it, but it only holds around 24 ounces.

Profile Designs has the AquaCell which is a monster.  Dual chambers, but still has some splashing issues.  I prefer the Podium Quest, which is also dual chamber, a bit better splashing control, and installs/removes easier without bouncing around as much.  I have both pictures and some more on my review.  The Never reach would probably not work well since you have sucking issues.

I just talked to Paul and he agreed to help Suzy work on her sucking issuesSurprised

Hey Rob....Moony....Laughing

I found this one and this one.  Not sure how aero they would be, but they would hold way more than my current single chamber Profile.  Curious whether they leak like my Profile does or any other downsides....I currently carry only water in mine and then a 400-600 calorie flask of something....thoughts?

Edited: Hey Jeff....you like the Podium Quest?  I like it too...lots of ounces and NO SUCKING issues George! .  Do you see any issues with fitting betwee aerobars?  I am assuming mine might be narrower than yours????? Have a note into my fitter to ask him....would love this unit!

I pushed up some hills higher than 190 because I didn't want to shift to the small chain ring.  I either need to up my FTP or shift down for races.  The wattage gives you an unbiased number that tells you how hard you are working.  Some declines I coasted down because there was nothing I could do to push 190 going downhill.  It gives you a good idea of what stress you are putting on your body.

Why? I do not understand why people do not use the smaller chain ring. Have you ever figured out all of your gear ratios? There is significant interleaving of the combinations using the big and little front ring. The smaller front ring is there for a reason. Why would you choose NOT to use a tool at your disposal? I would reconsider this approach. JMTCW

On this I would agree...  there is a use of the easiest gear just like the hardest.  If you truly don't need the current small ring / big cog  gear then get a new cassette to give you a full range...

gdale - 2010-04-12 2:28 PM Funny story about a friend that I thought I would share...

A friend of mine has been talking about doing a triathlon for a couple of years.  He was has been a cyclist for many years and a fitness runner.  He has been talking about it for so long that his wife wanted to get him to finally do it so she bought him a wetsuit for his birthday.  He tries it on for the first time and it is really uncomfortable.  It is extremely tight in most areas, kind of loose in the crotch area and really uncomfortable around the neck.  Turns out that he put it on BACKWARDS!!  He didn't even realize that it was backwards until after he had taken it off and read some of the paper work that came with the suit.  He told me the story and I was LMAO.  I only wish his wife had taken pictures!

When he tried the suit on the right way, it felt fine.

Wearing your suit backward is preferred if you wear your aero helmet backwards on the bike!

I had much better luck with the Podium Quest.  The AquaCell had all sorts of issues staying put, even when using the bracket the smaller one uses to hold it inplace.  It made the AquaCell very hard to put on properly.   The PQ is easier to slide on and off I think due to the design of the bottle.

ryanp100 - 2010-04-12 11:47 AM But back to AP vs. NP... When I race, I'll monitor my AP from time to time to make sure I'm close to my target number. However, I mainly pay attention to my real time watts on the hills because, as you mentioned, your AP is often not the best reflection of your effort. In a HIM, for example, I usually shoot for about 78-80% of my FTP, and I'll watch on the hills to make sure I'm pacing myself; I definitely want to limit the time that I'm above threshold.

Okay, next question (I may never stop).  How do you manage to reduce your effort on a hill?  My avg power (while pedaling) was around 185, but when I'm on a hill it goes significantly higher - like into the high 200's, low 300's, and I sustain it.  Even if I'm in a small gear I'm putting out a lot more watts, but if I slow my cadence I find I don't have a good rythym.  Thoughts?

This is my firm belief that power is going to make a HUGE difference in how I race this year.  I rode 40 miles yesterday on a route I have never done before, turns out it was fairly hilly.  My goal was to ride around 190 watts for the duration.  When going up hills, start dropping gears.  the PM helped me figure out that I was pushing up hills WAY too hard before, thus explaining why my hilliest course last year I totally bonked the run.  I had no idea how much I have to shift down in order to keep wattage the same.

Agreed - but if I'm in my smallest gear pushing 300+, what am I supposed to do at that point?  Just pedal slower?

As a couple of others have alluded to, it's the wattage that's important here, and making sure that you're not blowing your legs for the rest of the ride or run. The tendency for most people is to go too hard uphill and then not be able to keep the watts up on the downhill. 300w is some pretty hefty power. Can I ask what your FTP is? What's your gearing? I'm assuming a 39 small ring in the front, and maybe a 23 or 25 for the largest cog on your cassette?

50 ounces of Fluid is over 3lbs of extra weight that you would be throwing on the bike!  This seems to be a bit of an over kill.  That is why they have the aid stations out on the course.  Suzy (in my experience, and in my opinion) you have a few options.  You use the one you have and make your nutrition pretty strong (in your AirStream) then at every aid station take that water bottle to dilute your Airstream, and dump it before you even get to the end of the aid station!  That being said I always keep a water bottle on my bike because you sometimes just need a change of taste.  YOU DEFINITELY DON'T NEED TO CARRY 50 ounces on the bike with you!!!

If you don't like the spilling buy Profile Designs New w/ a lid.  No spilling issues what so ever...

Bike question for whomever feels qualified to answer it.....what is the difference between the way Friel calculates HR and power zones versus Coggan?

Background:  For the last couple of weeks I have noticed that when I am supposed to be riding in Zone 3, my HR is often in low to mid Zone 2 while my Watts are middle to upper Z3....we originally attributed it to dehydration, lack of sleep or some other anamoly, but it keeps happening.  On my ride yesterday, RPE would have suggested Z2 to Z3 for all four hours...instead 2 hours were in Z1. Huh?

I use TP and my coach suggested we use Coggans for my HR while power numbers remain the same.  In looking at the new zones they basically shift everything one zone which seems to make sense, but why is there a difference?

Birdy---Tell me how to be better....I absolutely cannot fill on the fly.  I stop every time I have to fill that stupid 20 oz Profile bottle...yesterday I drank 60 oz of fluid which means I stopped 2 times and probably lost 2 minutes per time, maybe more.  In a training ride not so bad, in a HIM length race, BAD.....in an IM WORSE!   Maybe  I need balance exercises????

PS. I usually carry 60 oz of water now....front mount, and 2 20 oz bottles on the back.....

The Aerodrink holds (shows on-line) 32 ounces... + 2x20 oz. bottles?  That is 3.8lbs.  This I think will be ok for your Ironman, but I think you can get by without any new purchases?  Check w/ your twin on this.  See what she did for her 1/2.

steve.  since those wheels are sitting around collecting dust go ahead and throw them in the mail to texas.  i'll make sure they still work in a few weeks.

Steelhead, I just used an PD Aerodrink, and a single cage on the downtube. I'd toss an empty and grab a full bottle at a handoff, and fill the PD. I think there was 3 stops at Steelhead, which was MORE than enough stops (start off full, grab 3 bottles through the bike = 80oz over 3 hours).
