Despite my usually system of glide and running with extra Vaseline I got a good chaffing doing on my 2nd marathon last month. Used the same system as my first marathon when I had no problems (or minimal). For these races I ran in Nike distance shorts. Looking to try something different. Any other recommendations? TY Nate Every run of any distance has been done in Nike Dri-Fit shorts without any glide. I haven't gone further than 13.1 miles. They have been great for me, so much so that I will search out the very brand/model when buying new. I'm on pair #4. I'm not sure on the model (Challenger or Distance) but I know them when I see them on the clearance rack at the outlet mall. I have been using the nike dry fit distance. With liners. Maybe they just got to worn out. |

Racing is a bit of a stretch but I have been doing the "Cervelo Canada Cup" on Strava. If you do 3 events you are entered to win a Cervelo R5 DA 9100 - value is $8706. Finished my 3rd event this morning and there were only about 400 riders. I never win anything but - why not? |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Not racing.....I did marshal at least 700 kids at our league track championships yesterday,. That should count for something! The bad part (aside from losing my voice) was that I didn't get to see many of our athletes do their events as I was stuck in the marshaling area. (For those who don't know, this involves organizing the kids into their heats and lanes and lining them up in rows of chairs, then sending them on to the track on call. My dad was often head marshal at swim meets so somehow I have inherited this job, since I know how to do it and can be very loud.) Then add tropical heat, extreme pollution, some kids with very limited English, children as young as 6 or 7, majority of kids have probably never been in a meet before, coaches who send their kids in with 30 seconds before the event is run, and hard to pronounce names from at least 50 countries plus crazy "English" names (among other things, I called a "Tigger" and a "Bento", as well as identical Sri Lankan twins named something like Ranatiya and Ranathiya (??) and you can see how much fun I had yesterday! Still hoping to do Challange Wanaka Half in three weeks, but not sure. Have been having some family issues. Both parents were pretty ill with the flu; Dad (who's got other health and mobility issues) fainted, took a bad fall and was hospitalized for a few days. Lots of testing; apparently nothing broken or heart issues, but now he is less mobile than before and Mom is still weak and struggling to care for him. They have organized some help and don't want me to come (if I get sick, and due to asthma I tend to get quite ill with flu, it's just another problem for them) but I definitely will if anyone is hospitalized again or they change their minds. Just taking it day to day at this point. |

I hope both your parents make a quick recovery and that you don't have to make a trip back soon. The flu seems to be particularly nasty this year. |

Member 836 North Augusta, South Carolina | Subject: RE: Manatees Yesterday's 22 miler was a bust! Heartrate was through the roof and at mile 10, I desposited 10 miles worth of water and Clif Bloks on the side of the Greeneway trail. Up to that point, my run was going GREAT. Slogged 2 miles back to the car, sat down for a bit, drank some water, stood up, was dizzy, hot then cold and pulled the plug at mile 12. I've had about a 20% absence rate in my classes this week, so I know I'm working in a giant viral petri dish as a teacher. My stomach has felt a bit unsettled all week in the mornings (NO, NOT pregnant), but I'm fine otherwise. Today brings a tiny bit of nausea and a little headache. Here's hoping my body is fighting off whatever it is and wins. Good news is I get to try the 22 miles again next Saturday. |

Member 2689 Denver, CO | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Originally posted by amd723 My parents are really resistant to my offers to help. Dad (age 82) has had 2 surgeries this past year. Mom (age 79) didn't even want to line up backup from the neighbors in case she had difficulties getting him into the house afterwards. I think it's hard for them to admit they might need help because that means they're declining and might lose their independence. My 93 y.o. neighbor, who is getting quite frail, says he doesn't want assistance because he doesn't want to become an invalid. It's hard to want to give a hand to someone who is obviously struggling but who doesn't want the help. Sigh....Originally posted by JBacarella Originally posted by jmkizer X2 It's so tough, because we are never taught how to parent our parents. Originally posted by Hot Runner ... Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatees Take care of yourself. I'll be going off the radar for a while. I got a call shortly after midnight when my dad passed away suddenly, apparently of sudden cardiac arrest. Both he and Mom had been sick with the flu, although he apparently had only a mild case of it. He had passed out early last week but the doctors thought it was just dehydration/low blood pressure, and I was on the phone with him as recently as Friday. Dad's had heart and other health issues for quite some time; unclear if his death was flu-related or it was just his time to go. According to Mom it was very sudden--he got up in the morning and seemed normal, had breakfast, went to his favorite chair to watch the news, and suddenly had trouble breathing. (He was not having any breathing issues earlier, just sore throat and slight cough.) She went to call 911, and said when she turned around he was already "gone". The paramedics called me as they were about to stop efforts to revive him as Mom asked them to; I repeated his request that he did not want life support, asked them to hold the phone to his ear, and said what had to serve as a goodbye over the phone as they let him go. He did NOT want to go in a hospital attached to tubes, or in a care home. I'm glad at least he left this life in the way he wanted with Mom by his side; hope he was already unaware by the time they started working on him. Heading home for the next three weeks and just praying I stay healthy so I can support Mom. I have had the shot; possibly had this virus during an outbreak here last year, so hopefully it is good for something. Sick ones, please get some rest! |
