All your good thoughts must have helped, my surgery went well and recovery is going well. I am doing some PT and continuing with PT for my back. I am making the arrangements for my spinal fusion surgery now. It makes me sad to be completely out of all the fun things for several months (or maybe just a few, fingers crossed). It also makes me happy to get this mess fixed and be able to have all the fun when it is all said and done. Nothing but surgery will help and the chance of doing more, permanent damage will always be there if I don't. I have to make a trip to Fla in April to pick my Mom up for the summer. I hope to schedule the surgery immediately after that.Other good news: i got my first vaccine yesterday! I am ecstatic!!!!

Great news! I have been so happy to see you PT-ing on Strava.  I'm tickled that you have started down the vaccine path.  Has Gloria had any luck in that area?

Gloria got her first and ia due for her second shot in a week! Happy dance.

I imagine that your trip will be a lot better than it was last year!

it was odd going last year in the middle of a pandemic. And, once there we could do nothing safely. This year we will be fully vaccinated so hopefully we can so some fun things. Chris!

I quit the TriDot plans about 3 weeks into it after my second injury.  I haven't hurt myself in 6 years with the sport other than one sprained ankle and races.  Races don't count because I am trying to kill myself there and ankles are just bad luck. So with pulling things twice in three weeks I pulled the plug and went back to the beginning to start over at day 1 of another plan.

I didn't stick to that either.  We have a cold snap that made it hard to get out for a week then I moved which threw me off for another week.  So I now have been in the new home for almost two weeks.  I don't have a place to swim yet and I don't have a place to ride my bike map out yet other than the indoor trainer.  Every time I see a trainer ride on my "plan" I find myself wishing I was running outside in the beautiful weather that we are having.  So I keep skipping my bike ride to go running.  I was justifying that to keep motivated I have to do what I enjoy and right now it is running.  So my running is going great but my bike fitness is going down the drain and I have never had any swim fitness.  So..I guess I need to decide if I want to race this spring or not.  If not I will keep running like an antelope and ride and add cycling and swimming back in when I get tired of running every day.

If I decided to race the Cap Tex Tri in Austin, TX on Memorial Day in 12 weeks is looking like a good option.  I forgot how much races cost though.  $150 for an Olympic race.  Last year I was doing no-frills duathlons that had about 30 people participating and they were only $45.  No Tee shirt, not metal, but we got great support on the course, chipped timing, USAT certified results, etc.  The past 5-6 years I got free 5K races through the Choctaw Nation Community Wellness plan.  It looks like running events are about $45 here too.

So...I am a little gun shy on racing because I am in a new area and don't know what races are good, I am not at the top of my game with training, big races are still being canceled, and I haven't figured out where to get race discount codes and sweetheart deal on registrations pricing yet. So...just training for the fun of training is where I am at right now.

Maybe embrace the "running is my jam" situation this spring and do a few running events?

I'm glad to hear that you are safely moved and I hope that you avoided that power outage mess.

all of this!

X2!
I'm very much in favor of listening to your body and congratulate you on pulling the plug on a program that may have been hurting you. This past year calls for extraordinary measures and if running is what works for you now, go with it.

On the vaccine front, I just got booked for a first shot tomorrow. I'm not sure if the brand I'm getting is good for 5G though.

agree with everyone about embracing the run and get back to cycling and swimming when you want. Janyne, Melanie, and I pulled the plug on our spring HIM for various reasons and I can’t say I’m sad about not doing all that training!

  Thanks!

Well, I heard from a childhood friend today.  He just completed his 2nd Virtual Marathon.  His first one four months ago did go as planned and so he picked me and my brother's brain for tips and said that everything he tried worked like a charm and he broke his marathon PR by 30 minutes this week.  So...I totally am feeling like I need to run a marathon now.  I think I want to do another Triathlon more though.  I did a virtual 70.3 triathlon last September which was a really good feeling, but it has been 18 months since I did my last Triathlon race so I am thinking that I should get back in the game and get ready to do the Olympic or Sprint race in Austin in 12 weeks. I can build on a running base though.  I have done that before starting with big run volume then slowly decreasing the running miles as I increase the bike and swim volume.

Just don't kill yourself in the process.  I mean, vomiting off the bike is not where it's at.  Maybe an FTP test is in order (depressing, I know!)?  If you decide to target some Olympic and Sprint tris and then a fall marathon, maybe be just a tiny bit more gradual ramping up the bike?  Just saying!

Just as a heads up to anyone getting their second Pfizer shot, you can get a severe case of hives, itchy throat, and swelling face up to 10 days after the shot.

Now I get to deal with the steroids and their side affects as well.

Ya...350 Watts on the bike trainer and me have not been getting along lately.  I did a FTP test 3 weeks ago and was down about 40 Watts from where I was last June.  That was also down from where I was in the Pre-season last year, but right about where I was in the pre-season two years ago.  So I am not in a terrible stop and if I bring some consistency back the bike am sure that I will be fine in a few weeks.

Yeah, it's always mildly depressing when I retest after some time off the bike.

Yeah, it's always mildly depressing when I retest after some time off the bike.

This morning I did a 60-minute tempo ride on the bike trainer instead of the high intensity intervals that Coach Chad at TrainerRoads had in my plan the two previous times on the intervals workouts 3-4 reps in and then coming off the bike trainer feeling woozy.  I think I will focus on the tempo work for a while before visiting the high-intensity stuff again.

Proof of life!
I had an unexpected surgery last week. I had a huge cyst on my ovary, which caused it to twist and hurt like labor. Also, it was so big it blocked the blood flow and my ovary died. Thus, it had to be removed as well.
I am feeling fine now, but the first week of recovery was awful! I had a lot of morphine give that day, plus anastesia, and it took a while to get out of my system. I feel sorry for addicted people and what they go through during the withdrawals... I don't blame them for taking more drugs - just to nit feel like a complete crap... I could not even think of anything positive or "tomorrow will be a better day" things - and they probably have it worse, especially when they don't have things to floorish their lives like I do - kids, sports, etc...
It also made me appreciate health workers more and more (I have always appreciated them, but there is always a room for more appreciation!), and have more respect for life an its circumstances. I was in a lot of pain despite two doses of morphine. I don't even want to imagine people who suffer more pain, people in places without proper care and morphine supplies... It really made meappreciate more all the things I have.

I obviously cannot exercise... Which made me sad because of my ultra race in April. I am hoping they will move my registration to next year or another year. it was not that expensive, but it's a second race I paid for and cannot participate in (the first one was cancelled due to Covid).

Those of you who have had minor surgeries - or have some experiences - when is it wise to start running again? I know each body is different, and it depends on the surgery, and what the doctor said (I have an appointment next week), and everyone recovers in a different way... But wanted to have a general idea if it's months or weeks.

I hope everyone is doing well, i will read some previous posts in a moment

what an awful experience! I am in awe that you are focused on others less fortunate while still being in pain. I have no advice on recovery times, but I hope you are on your feet soon!

Oh poor you! That sounds awful! I remember my experience with severe pain (after the plate and screws in my elbow and one other time when I think swelling put pressure on a nerve) made me have a new appreciation for people who deal with this on a long-term basis. I also remain frightened that I'll be in that much pain again with no relief--the meds I was prescribed made me very nauseous but did nothing for the pain. Apparently I don't metabolize them normally. I've had this issue with some other meds (Novacaine can take a couple of hours to take effect on me, as a kid I had a bunch of dental work done with basically zero numbing) and my grandmother had the same thing with some of her arthritis meds--it may be genetic. Rather than try something else, I was basically told (by a male doctor and PT) that it was all in my head, I was exaggerating, or maybe I had poor pain tolerance because I've never had a baby..... (So what about guys???)

I would ask the doctor about recovery time. I'd think it would depend on the nature of the surgery. Clearly you want to take it really easy until any traces of anesthesia or opioids clear your system and you're not uncomfortable with just normal daily activities like light housework, easy walks, etc. I'd start with walking and go from there. If there are stitches then usually you need to avoid anything strenuous and sweaty until those come out. Plus getting HR up can increase swelling. Once you are cleared to run then build back up gradually. I find I'm most likely to get injured just after taking time off for unrelated illnesses or injuries.

In an unrelated medical update, I had #2 (Moderna) about 3 hours ago. So far just a slightly sore arm. Have seen all these horror stories about side effects in the media and numerous stories of colleagues being absolutely miserable, so kind of dreading the weekend.... Sure hope this is it for a while and we don't have to spend the next 10 years being human guinea pigs and pincushions!

I believe it is a Strawberry Shortcake bandaid this time.....Maybe severely dating myself, but that is the character closest to my childhood knowledge of such things. They had lollipops but this time no one tried to distract me with them! I would assume we got the pediatric nurses again!

yes, so sorry you went through this! The only surgery I’ve has is shoulder surgery and I imagine recovery for it is different from what you went through.

It may give you some comfort to hear that 3 of my family members who had moderna had no side effects besides the sore arm. I wont tell you what the 4th person went through

Yikes! Still just a sore arm at T + 6 hours. Heading off to loaf in bed. I have taken a load off my mind by getting all the prep done for Monday's Kinder/Grade 1 class (yes, you read that right) and planning the 3/4 class. Just worried I won't be up to it later.

Yes, the "big kid teacher" is being drafted to teach ALL 20-22 (it keeps fluctuating with last-minute changes) kiddos in four grades K, 1, 3, and 4, whose parents have decided they need to stay fully online for the rest of the school year, starting Monday. It has fallen to me as we are a small school (about 100 kids total right now in K-4) so our "online only" section is not just 1-2 grades as at most bigger schools, but four, and apparently no one else has the right combo of certification and bilingual skills to do it. Plus a colleague mentioned to admin that in my first two years of teaching (we were at the same very small school), I taught grades 6-9 (first year) and 2-5 (second year). But those kids were all in one classroom where I could keep an eye on them, not online!

I have never taught below Grade 2 in my life. O.M.G. Just hope none of those little ones suffers irreparable harm!

what an awful experience! I am in awe that you are focused on others less fortunate while still being in pain. I have no advice on recovery times, but I hope you are on your feet soon!

yes, so sorry you went through this! The only surgery I’ve has is shoulder surgery and I imagine recovery for it is different from what you went through.

Ouch, this sounds like no joke at all! My thoughts and prayers are with you. The only surgery I have have is when my gall bladder was taken out and a hernia repaired, and there is NO WAY to compare that to yours. I know I was up and back at it in less than a week. I would hope that your doc would tell you that you need much more time off.

So far just feel like I have a hangover or maybe did a hard HIM yesterday and then inadvisably had a beer right after (race hangover?)....No fever, just tired, slight headache and body aches, sore arm. Definitely not up to a workout of any kind, but hoping by later this afternoon I can get out for a walk. Of course it's the weekend, weather is beautiful, and at this time of year it is sunny only about one day in 10 around here!

scary stuff, I hope the drugs did the trick and you won't have any other surprise side affects.  Take care!

x2 - i imagine your abdomen needs some significant healing. Would check with the doctor and see about rehab resources or maybe even a physio, depending. You want to have your sporty life back!

Good morning, Manatees!

Sending healing thoughts your way, Marysia.  I hope the hives are gone now, Robin K-C. Good seeing you last Friday, Robin P.  I hope that you are setting into your new home, Curtis.

Kevin and I had a good time in WNC last weekend.  We rode in Bent Creek on Friday and met up with Robin and Jim afterward.  It was a gem of  a day.

I had another good ride on Saturday. Kevin made his ride "epic" and ended up in urgent care.  He was going through a boggy area on a single track and hit a submerged branch just wrong.  Don't worry!  The bike is OK!  Kevin cut his knee and ended up with three stitches.  He's on the DL -- well, off the bike -- for 10-14 days. The doctor there (and here) don't want him tearing the owie opened with the constant pedaling.  I'm pretty sure that he'll be climbing the walls by the time this is over.  (In other Kevin health news, he has his first vaccine shot tomorrow.)

With Kevin on the DL after Saturday's incident,  I tried to be nice yesterday and take the Aspero out on a road ride.  I was reminded that slick tires are used on roads for a reason.

I have many questions! related to mixed surface events like BWR where they are 70-80% on pavement. How do you decide on tire choice? Do you use your gravel bike for the 20 miles of gravel or would you be better of on a road bike for the 50+ miles of pavement?

I saw an interview that Ted King ran 30s at BWR and also that he ran Bon Jon Pass (35s) at BWR but Asheville is not San Diego and I'm no Ted King ;-)

I have no answer for you regarding tire choice, but I am curious if your Aspero has the same tires as mine -Donnelly 40 x 700. The tread is gripping on the side, but (supposedly) the direction of the tread down the center makes for smoother running on pavement. I've only ridden short distances on the rode and they felt ok, but in addition to it being a short ride, it was flat so my "this isn't bad" feeling may not hold for longer and or hilly rides!
