Master 6834 Englewood, Florida | Subject: RE: Manatees Originally posted by melbo55 Originally posted by johnthecat I did my first run for the year last night. This was the first real run post GBS recovery. Considering that I haven't really ran in over a year this went surprisingly a lot better than expected. I had planned to take walk breaks, but wasn't sure what run/walk interval to use as I wanted to push a little bit. I started running and just monitored my body and ended up doing a 5 min run/1 min walk interval. Pace for the run was really slow 12 + minute miles and I did a total of 3 miles. No major issues today so far so I take this as my official 1st workout towards my next tri. EXCELLENT!!! That is great, Markus! I'm glad to hear you are feeling well enough to begin training again. X2 |

595 | Subject: RE: Manatees Originally posted by Hot Runner Take care of yourself. I'll be going off the radar for a while. I got a call shortly after midnight when my dad passed away suddenly, apparently of sudden cardiac arrest. Both he and Mom had been sick with the flu, although he apparently had only a mild case of it. He had passed out early last week but the doctors thought it was just dehydration/low blood pressure, and I was on the phone with him as recently as Friday. Dad's had heart and other health issues for quite some time; unclear if his death was flu-related or it was just his time to go. According to Mom it was very sudden--he got up in the morning and seemed normal, had breakfast, went to his favorite chair to watch the news, and suddenly had trouble breathing. (He was not having any breathing issues earlier, just sore throat and slight cough.) She went to call 911, and said when she turned around he was already "gone". The paramedics called me as they were about to stop efforts to revive him as Mom asked them to; I repeated his request that he did not want life support, asked them to hold the phone to his ear, and said what had to serve as a goodbye over the phone as they let him go. He did NOT want to go in a hospital attached to tubes, or in a care home. I'm glad at least he left this life in the way he wanted with Mom by his side; hope he was already unaware by the time they started working on him. Heading home for the next three weeks and just praying I stay healthy so I can support Mom. I have had the shot; possibly had this virus during an outbreak here last year, so hopefully it is good for something. Sick ones, please get some rest! Sorry for you loss. I hope in this difficult time you can take comfort his wishes were honored, and you were able to say goodbye Nate |

When we lived in the area, we always took visitors into the city for an afternoon of wandering. Central Park, Times Square, Museums, downtown, Empire State Building, Little Italy, etc. Just to drink it all in. Most of the folks that were visiting us were small town people, so they were affected differently than people that are used to a big city. One touristy thing that my daughter did many years ago on a trip was ride the Hop On Hop Off bus. She enjoyed that. I would be inclined to visit the 9-11 memorial, which happened after we had left the area. The other items that I must do would be a real slice of pizza, a real deli pastrami sandwich, and (probably the Intrepid Air and Sea museum. If you have family that can be traced back, Ellis Island would probably be cool, as would Lady Liberty. |

Radio City Music Hall tour or Madison Square Garden tour (if that's your thing - I really enjoyed both). See a show (again, if that's your thing). Ferry ride to or around Statue of Liberty. Go for a run in Central Park. Soooo many neat restaurants and bars. Oh, sorry, that's more than 2 or 3. |

If you do want to go up the Empire State building I'd be prepared for very long lines and a crowded view at the top! I did the tour when I was there for a family wedding a couple of years ago and wished I hadn't! Bur for some it is one of the quintessential NY things to do. I should have gone when I lived there and no one cared! Going to a show on Broadway is something I think everyone should do and the museums and central park. And yes, you need to eat a real slice of NY pizza and have a bagel! Another cool way to see the city is on the circle line boat. No hopping on and off, but it is really nice. |

Champion 14677 | Subject: RE: Manatees Originally posted by kbhanson3 I did it the first year with the former race director. The second year with the current, new director. The race was MUCH better with the old director. Caveat: it was the first year and only the second race that the new director was responsible for, it could be better now. The staff and volunteers were much less motivated the second year. Traffic on the road was an issue for the longer distances. The run o the Half and the Iron distance had been changed to part trail with sugar sand the second year. My friends that did those distances told me it was awful. The transition area is the best of any race I have ever seen. Every racer has lots of room and a dedicated bench The race is a smaller race over all compared with iron branded ones so I liked it much better. It would be less motivating for the longer distances just because there are fewer people there. I would do it again, but nothing longer than the Olympic distance. The swim is nice and the park that the race is held in is really pretty with giant live oaks.
