Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This thread sure moves fast, I need to make time to stop in more often! I've been slack and finding it hard to get my mojo back; especially since I've gained several pounds. I think if I focus focus mostly on running and strength training I'll start feeling better. I'll be 50 in a few months and I'm afraid my metabolism is getting sluggish. Any other ladies around 50ish feel a need to adjust training or racing goals?

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Stacy- I've had to miss A races because of bacm issues as well. (Disc and nerve damage that has been a big recurring problem since my son was born (august 2013). Better to heal up now and get back into it when your back improves. Good luck! |

Plus I really appreciated the treadmill/video gait analysis. Good luck to those racing this weekend! First impressions were that they felt very light yet comfortable. They are last season's, hence the sale. (edit for spelling) Edited by awm007 2016-01-09 1:54 PM |

I didn't start racing until I was near 50 (48), and I was never really athletic. Active YES, athletic NO! My racing goals have always been (in this order): NOT die, Finish, Finish before cut off time, try like hell to not be last. So far, I have made all those goals, but it has been close to all (but the first one, I hope). It is much harder as I add years (I refuse to say aging) to keep up my energy levels and to keep off weight. If you see current photos of me, it is evident I am not doing well on the weight thing. |

The hesitation I have is if I should wait until I can finish closer to a 2:00 hour timeframe or does it really matter. It's not necessarily a cheap entry either. I mainly compare Smarties to the plain M&M's because that's what they resemble the closest. And ever since we started talking about Smarties I have the German Smarties commercial slogan stuck in my head. "Viele Viele bunte Smarties". Translates into "Many many colorful smarties" Originally posted by johnthecat I need to decide by Sunday before prices go up. If I do it it will be slow and more of a checkbox that I did it than anything. My Garmin's race predictor tells me I should be able to run it below 2 hours. Not sure how it comes up with these numbers but closer to 2:20 to 2:30 is probably more realistic. I guess i'll see how my long run goes on Sunday and go from there. Haven't used the Garmin predictor before, so no idea on it. How does your expectation of how the race will go compare to what you would want to get out of doing one? Are you itching to do one? Curious why you're looking at it. I don't understand why Smarties tend to only be compared to plain M&M's? There are 10 types of M&M's now. And that's excluding holiday specials as those tend to be certain colors of existing flavors. Your predicted finish time will affect how you line up at the start is all. When it gets closer to your event, some folks here can probably help you narrow that down a bit.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() All, Advice needed from some of the more experienced members on here. Short version: To what extent do you stick with a training plan vs modify depending on contingencies? Longer version: I started with Tri last summer and trained in a pretty unsystematic way. This year I have signed up for an HIM and have found a much more systematic plan (Fink's plan provided in the "IronFit Secrets for the Half Iron-Distance..." book). I'm assuming the authors set up the plan based on a periodization schedule - for instance not training the same intensity and sports on consecutive days, allowing rest time, etc. While sticking to the letter of the plan would seem best, and there injuries and illness that necessitate the occasional change. However, my question relates to what extent do others on here modify for things such as weather, training with friends, etc. For instance, if I have a bike day scheduled for Wed but it's supposed to be rainy and 35 degrees that day, would you swap that with Tuesday's swim day when it is expected to be sunny and 60 degrees? Or would you slog it out in the bad weather or trainer to stick with the plan? Just curious as to what others do. I don't want to be one of those persons that comment on online cooking recipes where they substitute half the ingredients then complain that the resulting dish doesn't taste good. On the other hand, if I can get outside rather than ride the trainer by switching days, I'd rather do that. Thanks in advance Manatees! |

First things first- Life happens, and you aren't getting paid to do this. In fact you are paying to do this. I see a training plan as an outline for getting the conditioning you need to compete or complete, depending on your goals. It didn't come on a stone tablet. It is usually okay to change things up depending on outside forces you may or may not have control over. You can move workouts around or skip one if your schedule/life does not allow it. I would just look at what the plan is trying to accomplish with a particular workout. For example if you have a long day then a recovery day followed by a speed day and you are thinking about switching and it results in back to back long day followed by a speed day, you may reconsider, or choose to skip one, or move a different workout into that position or even shorten one if your schedule allows. Most plans will explain what they are trying to accomplish. Look at what the writer of the plan tells you, then make the call. For a long distance tri, your long sessions are more important, in my opinion. As long as you are following the bulk of the training you can miss some. If you do miss a few, over the period of the plan, don't sweat it. |

On the other hand, if I can get outside rather than ride the trainer by switching days, I'd rather do that. Thanks in advance Manatees! What can take a bit of understanding a bigger picture and also the pieces being moved around. So in this case you would need to understand what the bike workout is (and the swim) and also the several days on either side. As seen from an earlier posts, my hard bike workouts can go quite hard. If moving it butts up against another hard day (or string of hard days) then that's not a good idea as I won't be able to execute both up at the intensity they should be even though I may still be able to go hard and exhaust myself. It would also get in the way of the recovery and gains from the workouts. If it was an easy 40' or so ride, then this wouldn't be an issue. 40' isn't a big ride (for me) and easy is, well, easy. Since the example is the bike, I would likely just ride it indoors if that was the forecast. Generally, the biggest thing for bike improvement will be power development, and that can be done very well on a trainer. The trainer can actually be the better option for in in a number of cases as it's harder to do anything besides rather short intervals in the more local area. Larger takes riding out farther than I have time for or getting in the car to drive a ways first. The skill part is rather low in triathlon and usually doesn't take that much to become alright with. Skipping an occasional workout tends to work out ok for many, more so if they don't know how to prioritize workouts that well. There are a fair number of things to juggle when moving the parts around. Just move on to the next. Over time you might be able to look back and see if you're skipping too many and then try to figure out why. Figure out how to do better. |
