dalessit - 2009-12-20 12:05 PM So Sam let me have some extra money and I need to get a wetsuit.

I have been eying up the Desoto 2 piece wetsuit.  I have tried 3-4 one pieces and they all really seem to pull at my shoulder.

Only problem is I hate to spend 500 bucks on a wetsuit that I might use 3 x a year.  Most of the OWS in this area are not wetsuit legal.  If I were to do a lot more OWS' where I needed it, I wouldn't have a problem spending the money for something I would get a good use out of.

Also you can get the xterra ones for so much less, but it's not really practical to keep trying out wetsuits that won't work.

I swim ok with a sleeveless but I am such a cold whimp, I prefer the full sleeve.

So any thoughts?  I sent Desoto an e-mail to see if they had any of last years left, and been scouring e-bay/craigs list, ST, BT, etc.

What size do you think you would wear?

DougRob - 2009-12-20 12:53 PM Ran this AM, a new personal best for length: 12.6 miles in 2 hours. Next week end is 2:15 and between 13-15 miles. Working toward the Tobacco Road marathon in March.

Doug

Great job Doug.  I just finished 7 in 1:13.  This is faster than I have done since I started back running about 2+ years ago after a 14-15 year break.  I have been using the 4/1 Galloway method for anything over 5-6 miles but I am now just doing the distance like I did "back in the day"

It really feels good to just get out there and run for a while.

Check out a couple of the articles from Infinit, primarily calculating run calorie needs and osmolality.  I was able to calculate my nutritional requirements for events really well using those two articles.   Not only is the number of calories critical, but the timing and the make-up....get too many simple sugars and you could have big GI Issues to worry about.  Everyone is different, so experiment during training.  Let me know if you have any questions.

By the way, I am not necessarily pushing Infinit.  I like it for marathons, but don't use it for triathlon.

Suzy

Suzy:

Tried some of the fueling strategies you suggested, and that appears to be a big part of solving the issue.  Just did 15 miles in 2:15.  Still need to do some experimentation with the precise strategy details, but I felt really good.  Thanks.

Now I just need to get through "Running within" (which I purchased at your suggestion) to deal with "that little voice" issues.  Thanks again.

I thought that was the way everybody swims.  Are you guy still learning this stroke?

Look at you Barry.  If I recall, in late 2008 and early 2009, you were just trying not to sink!    Now, you are a swimming superstar!  You really have come a long way my friend!

Just got back from a swim and thought I would throw 2cents at the Vertical forearm discussion.

I have been trying to use the high elbow technique for a while now because it really helps my rotator cuff.  If I go deep with my hand, it puts lots of pressure on my right Rotator, and hurts.  Today because of this discussion I was focusing more on technique and discovered something for me that really helps get me in the position.

The easiest and quickest way for me to get it right is to make the first move with my hand flexing down.  Then push the hand straight back...keeping it pointing down.  So it is flexed down at the start of the pull, then straight, then flexed backward at the end of the pull.  I don't know if that makes any sense or is right, but seemed to help keep my elbow up and my forearm down.

Barry,

That is a great visualization along with the one earlier about the barrel.  Tomorrow is a swim day so I am going to try this out.  My strokes needs all the help it can get.

Glad to hear you made some good progress, did you use one form of sugar or multiple?  A very respectable run and if you felt fine doing it all the better.  Keep and open mind with the book.  Let me know what you think!

Yes...I was kind of surprised to see this thread sitting halfway down the page!  No sbr training today but did get some downhill skiing in!  Too bad we didn't get some of that east coast storm though.  Most of what I was skiing on was man made!

Planning to do a indoor ride tomorrow (stationary bike at the YMCA) to get me to 1500 miles for the year...and yes that milestone is the only reason I am getting on the bike!

Hi group - I'm back from the dead.  Feeling better, dug out from the snow and back to workouts!!!

Hope everyone had a great weekend.  My race was cancelled - good thing since I was not up to running anyways.

Tony and I are home tomorrow with the kids.  Probably add some sledding, snowman and snow fort building to the day's workouts.  Hope everyone had a great weekend.

Yep....The fastest 7 miles I have done since I started back running 2+ years ago.  36 degrees but it felt warmer some hills on the course but nothing new in the Atl. area.

Please bear in mind that I use the word FASTEST to be a relative term.  This is my long run for the week and it was about 10.5 per mile or so....believe me, I AM STOKED to be at this pace and running without walking breaks.  My goal pace for the marathon in March is about 11:15 so I am right on track to this point.

Hey Steve, you are doing a great job getting ready for your marathon and if you see improvement, you know your plan is working!

Question: Does anyone do any specific strectches for the hamstrings after long runs? I am not too sore today, but my hammys are tighter than I would like. I am curious if there are things others are doing to counter this tightness.

Thanks.

And Steve great job on the run today!

Yep, I do the standard sit on the floor legs out in front of you and touch my toes for 15 seconds gently stretching,  I then lie on my back, one leg straight out and the other one as straight in the air as you can get it and gently pull it towards me.  Lastly I do one with movement in all three planes--stand on with your foot on a benc or chair, hands out to your side like you are being stuck up, and move side to side for a count of 20, and then twist for a count of 20.  Bend over and do the same thing.  Notice the key is "gently".  Also would be a good idea to use the TP massage equipment if you have it or a foam roller if you don't.

Happy Monday Kids!

Last week was a great bike week, hitting nearly 10 hours on the CT.  The upcoming week is all about the SWIM!  I am not naturally a swimmer, but someone is trying to get me there....doubles in the pool three times this week.  I thought about crying, but decided to embrace it instead.  Today is a rest day for me to get the bonescan done.  Should have results by early afternoon.  That will dictate my running future heading into the New Year.

Enjoy the day,
Suzy

PS. I have to admit, I did not like seeing the MG half way down the page either.  Do your part people!

YAY! All federal agencies in DC are closed today.

So no work for me.

Going to try to get in my 45 minute run from yesterday and a trainer ride tonight.

Best of luck with the bonescan, Suzy! Hopefully it will be a strong and healthy New Year for us all.

I am back on track and dedicated to doing my part from here on out. I will run today for sure! I'd like to do 10K, but after a rough few weeks without workouts, I might dial it back a bit. We'll take it easy and see how far I get in an hour.

Happy Monday, everyone!

Morning everyone!  Busy weekend for me.  I had about 12 things on my list to get done and got through all but 2 of them.  Luckily I had included my workouts in the list so was able to fit those in - otherwise they probably wouldn't have gotten done.

Good news/bad news.  Good news is that my leg seems to be getting better.  As long as I keep my runs easy and remember to do my stretching and massaging afterwards, it feels pretty good.  I'm going to try to up the miles a little on 2 of my runs this week and see how it goes.  Bad news is I can feel my head getting heavy and my sinuses getting congested - I think I might be getting sick Frown.  Hopefully I can fight it off - I've only got 2 1/2 days of work this week, then I'm off until after the new year.  I was hoping to use some of that time for some good workouts.

Off to catch up on what I missed the last couple of days.

Well, I tried this technique this morning. I don't think I have it right yet. It did not seem to impact my stroke count/lap or seem faster. I must be missing something here.
