Expert 1169 Sherman Oaks, CA | Subject: RE: I need help making a big decision TRAVEL BABY!!!! I did 6 weeks in Europe -- 3 of it alone. It was 6 years ago and I still get goose bumps thinking about it today. It is a rare chance in life. And if you don't bring your bike, bring your running shoes. What a great way to explore a new city. Congrats on the IM Finish and your time. That rocks. |

Member 23 Tempe, AZ | Subject: RE: I need help making a big decision Travel Travel Travel! Its been my #1 dream to tour the many pubs in Europe and "sample" all the different beers. Chillin in Central/South America is #2. This opportunity has presented itself to you and I say take it. You're only 27 once. |

Expert 878 Tallahassee, FL | Subject: RE: I need help making a big decision I personally would go to France with my bike and ride some of the classic stages that are the Tour. I think that'd be great. Or cycling in Italy. Good luck in whatever you decide. Edited by davealt 2007-04-24 5:14 PM |

Elite 2553 Tucson, AZ | Subject: RE: I need help making a big decision You've done all that training and racing for the IM, now it's time to have some fun! I agree, if travel is what you want to do, then go for it! Have you thought of getting a touring bike, some panniers, and doing some bike touring overseas? That way you could see lots of places and still keep some fitness by biking. I'm sure whatever you do, it will be an adventure! |

And to answer the original question, I'd try to find a way to combine the 2. If there was no practical way to do so I'd travel. And that's from someone who has a long term goal of IM Australia. |

Champion 10471 Dallas, TX | Subject: RE: I need help making a big decision Travel. If you don't need to work at this time... then take the time to travel. IM's and training for them will always be there when you get back. You can train for IM if you have a house, a good job, and a family. You can't travel for 6 months if you have all of those things. And... I would kill for an IM finish in 14 hours. |

Expert 721 Chandler, AZ | Subject: RE: I need help making a big decision Thanks for all the input! And thanks for the congratulations on the race. (my finish time was closer to 15 hrs: 14:51). I obviously have some research to do. And you guys have given me plenty to consider. Regardless of waht I end up doing, I'm sure I will always be coming back to tri's and endurance sports. And at the very least, if I travel, hopefully I can do some run races abroad. Anyone who is interested - stay tuned to my training blog, as the adventure will be unfolding there. But not for a few weeks yet. If everything goes well, I should be out of my house June 7, and be able to move forward from there. Edited by robin314159 2007-04-24 6:12 PM |

Elite 3020 Bay Area, CA | Subject: RE: I need help making a big decision If it were me, I would travel. IM will always be there. New tri-stuff will always be there. How often will YOU have the chance you have now? And, if the cycling/running/swimming is important to you - there's nothing that would stop you from doing most of that anywhere. If it were me, I'd buy a good long distance bike, and go explore whatever country I chose. I mean, if you pedaled your way across say, Italy, that'd save you a lot in transportation costs right there. Do some research on the cycling/running/hiking available and then go for it. FWIW, I think it'd be uber cool to cycle Australia - what a beautiful way to see the country. |

Master 1790 Tyler, TX | Subject: RE: I need help making a big decision Travel!!! When I was your age I wandered around Mexico and Central America on a motorcycle for about 6 months. Never regretted it once. I learned Spanish fairly well and ended up living and working in Spain and Mexico for a few years, and use Spanish daily in my current career and personal life. (FWIW, I was an Asian Studies major in college.) A surprising number of women do the solo budget travel thing. Be careful and you'll meet lots of interesting people and have lots of fun!

10 | Subject: RE: I need help making a big decision Sicne you're relatively close, I'd recomend going to India. I was there last year and it was a life-changing experience. Why India and not some other exotic and beautiful destinations? Because India is changing and developing extremely fast, and in a country where it's beautiful culture is either being overshadowed or mixed with western culture so fast, what you will see now you wont have a chvance to see again in your life. |

I'd use the time and money to get fast but maybe that's just me. Way to be an antagonist. You can GFY. LOL. Go treat yourself to a scooby snack for that one, flawless. Just for that I'll give you a good answer. I've been where you are before; I know EXACTLY how it feels to be a good apple without direction. My advice to you is to find a long term solution. You could use the money to travel, buy a bike, compete internationally, whatever...they're all temporary fixes for a deep-seated restlessness. You need to find a direction that will take you towards long term contentment. If you need more time to figure that out, use the money to buy it for you. Do whatever it takes to find a purpose that, at the end of your life, you can look back and be content having spent your time on. Cheers |

Veteran 185 Philadelphia | Subject: RE: I need help making a big decision Man, please, for all single 20somethings out there....GO TRAVEL!! Then come back and buy that bike. If it were me, I'd set aside 3g's for a nice bike when you get back. Then, go travel around. Like everyone said, this is probably the only time you will ever have a chance to see the world worry and hassle free. Also, I bet you can find places you can rent bikes to ride around at the places you visit. Sure they may be clunkers, but WHO CARES...you'll be peddling around chile or italy or spain or wherever. Hell, maybe you could even find a small race you could rent a bike and just do it for fun. |

Subject: RE: I need help making a big decision I say Travel. If you are worried that much about losing fitness, include a 1-2 week bike trip every couple of months! It is an amazing way to see the real part of many countries. Since you are by yourself, if you don't fancy the idea of traveling through S.America alone by bike, there are plenty of bike tour operators out there that you can go with. A bit more pricey than going solo, but still amazing trips. They will provide a bike so you don't have to worry about trekking yours with you during your travels. I have done bike trips in Cuba and in Western Europe and they have been incredible way to see the back country and to stay in shape and to continue to challenge yourself. Plus you can meet some like-minded people and expand your travels that way. Skip the tri-bike. You could crash it on your first ride. Your memories from traveling will never go away! Here are a couple of links from a quick Google search: http://www.realadventures.com/pages/bike-tours/south-america.htm http://www.experienceplus.com/bicycling/ FWIW, my wife and I live in Malaysia and if you are traveling in this part of the world, we would be happy to help you out and put you up. Sounds like a great opportunity! Have fun. ivan |

I am putting aside a nice chunk of money for down payment on next house, as well as various investments. I suppose i could always put down MORE, but I think I should live a little while I'm alive. Overall, I'll be using about 90% of my profit wisely, and squandering the rest on pleasure. This changes my thinking. I was going to suggest education for your dream career. Sounds like you probably have that covered. I'm cheap and conservative, but I'm all for splurging 10% of a windfall. TRAVEL! Its scary right? How did you feel signing up for IM? Its exciting because its scary. Find inspiration for what you want to do with the rest of your life. |

Elite 3491 In The Peleton | Subject: RE: I need help making a big decision My vote is to do both--spend the month leading up to IMWA in Australia and riding your new bike and take off from there to travel for a few months. That way you can train and work until just before IMWA and then bail on the real world and travel for a while! FWIW, lots of people cycle in South America. In Nov/Dec last year I spent 2.5 weeks with my girlfriend in S. America. We spent a couple days in Buenos Aires and 10 days trekking in Patagonia (which was AMAZING). Met plenty of solo travelers in Patagonia and saw quite a few people on bikes with lots of gear loaded up. Congrats on the IMAZ finish, I hope to join the Ironman club this fall too! |
