Maybe if I watched it again with 20 years more life experience, The Piano would now strike a chord with me. It came out the year I graduated hs and I thought I would be "mature" and watch an Oscar nom, but I really didn't like it and haven't tried again. Funny, though, the soundtrack pops into my head sometimes.

After it won best picture, I rented The Hurt Locker.  Fell asleep watching and just didn't have the desire to finish it.

I also hated Crash.  It was just another movie that Sandra Bullock completely ruined for me.

dodgersmom - 2013-04-21 7:10 PM Anything with Tom Cruise

dodgersmom - 2013-04-21 8:22 PM There is just something about him that has always rubbed me the wrong way.

Yep, I'm with you on that.  Although my disdain began a few years after Top Gun.  That one's pretty decent.

scoobysdad - 2013-04-22 9:56 AM "The Royal Tenenbaums" or pretty much anything by Wes Anderson. I don't what people like about this guy's movies. They're just long and tedious and unfunny. I think there's one funny line in "Rushmore", but a whole lot of tedious situations with characters I don't care about.

x2 on Wes Anderson movies.  Just watched Moonlight Kingdom last month and though it was one of the worst things on which I ever wasted my time.

I couldn't stand The Aviator. I kept hoping that maybe Howard Hughes had really just died at a very young age and I never heard about it.

Crash - what a preachy and over-rated movie.

bmass - 2013-04-21 9:30 PM I have seen lists that ranked "Citizen Kane" the best movie of all time.  Hated it!  Slow and boring.  For more modern, agree with Dark Knight.  I have thankfully never seen Titanic.

On the same vein - I sat down one day when 'Gone with the Wind' was on PBS - it was ridiculously long and the story didn't seem to go anywhere! I was so mad - but then maybe I just hadn't done my homework (i didn't read the book) to know the Scarlett doesn't learn anything at all and is a pretty terrible person - but it was the biggest movie of all time before so I thought I would give it a shot.

Oh, come on. It's just hard to top 101 Dalmatians, that's all

Schindler's List was/is way overhyped. Its a decent movie but gets way to shmaltzy and relays on overwrought, cheap (though clever) tricks to elicit emotionalism instead of developing characters and plot. It got the nod for the Oscor becasue Spielberg was such a giant of Hollywood ($billions in revenue) and this was supposed to be his serious Magnum ?Opus.

IMHO I think "The Pianist" was a much, much better Holocaust movie.

I have to jump on the hate train for the English Patient.  I'd blocked on that one because it sucked so much.

Empire of the Sun.  ugh.

Glad to see that I still hate most of the movies posted (that I've seen).

I do love Spaceballs and Super Troopers, though. Tacky and tasteless, I'm a big fan of

I couldn't stand "Shakespeare in Love," and how it got so many accolades baffles me to this day.

The Deer Hunter - one of my all time favorites !!!

I thought the Black Swan was ridiculous and Natalie Portman's fake overly-dramatic, unbelievable acting made me want to gag Everyone else I know loved it.

Also really disliked Shakespeare in Love....don't care for Gwyneth Paltrow's acting skills at all.

Captain America  (Ryan Gosling isn't an actor.  No more than Chris Hemsworth.)

Uhhhh... Ryan Gosling wasn't in that movie.

One of the few movies I have ever shut off or walked out of, along with "Spaceballs" -- and I generally LIKE Mel Brooks.

OMG   x2 on this.  I saw The Royal Tenenbaums in the theater and was ready to walk out 30 minutes in but I stuck it out because it was "supposed" to be good.  Maybe I just don't get it with this guys movies.  Uncomfortable is how I describe them and not in a good way

I really don't know if any of them are acclaimed, but I can't make it through more than 20 minutes of any of the Lord of the Rings movies.  Yawn fest.  I haven't seen the Hobbit and have no plans to do so but even my English degree, LOTR-loving spouse said it was boring.

Sideways???? Wasn't that a critically acclaimed movie about five years back? My wife and I both hated it. It was about stupid people who never grew up. Couldn't stand the characters. Stayed until the end and I will never get that two hours of my life back.

verga - 2013-04-22 7:58 AM In no particular order: The Wizard of Oz, Oz; the Great and powerful, Titanic, Waterworld, Dances with wolves, Avatar (Otherwise known as "Dances with smurfs").

Several of those were widely panned by critics, so I'm not sure they qualify here.

For me: Forrest Gump, Crash, Napoleon Dynamite come to mind.

Worst movie ever made: The Notebook. Talk about your cinematic pieces of crap.

Then there's `Notting Hill' ... I want to punch Julia Roberts in her oversized mouth and headbutt Hugh Grant in his giant teeth.

And let's not even start talking about The Big Lebowski. Snoozefest. The only redeeming quality is it had John Goodman in it.

Funny, that was going to be mine...

I think some folks might be confusing 'critically acclaimed' with 'boffo box office'. Some names being thrown around weren't really much loved by film intelligensia but amazed and delighted the senses of the masses. "I've seen better film on teeth." - Get Shorty

Separately, Scorsese must go with the low-bid contractor when it comes to editing. In almost every one of his movies, I leave thinking his 180minute movie could have been 120minutes without any loss of impact. "Gangs of New York" seemed to go on forever.

I'll probably get skewered for this, but a few months ago I rented Blade Runner on demand.  I am a big sci fi guy, that was totally my element when it came out, but never saw it.

Made it about an hour in before I couldn't take it anymore
