Master 9705 Raleigh, NC area | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Originally posted by cdban66 I use something like this for honey: Simple travel sized containers. Dishwasher safe and small enough to fit in my pant leg when I head out of T1. I wonder if that night work as well. Or how soft would your puree have to be???? I can see where a longer race would require too many of these, so it may not do you too well. I wasn't necessarily thinking of racing with this but something to mix up the swim > work > strength days. I do best with portion control. |

I was getting so many that I finally had to unsubscribe to most of them because they were jamming up my inbox. When I get home, I really don't want to deal with Even More Email. Anyway, I one of the newsletters that I kept had a thing in it last with about a product called Fuel for Fire. I read the description (Coach Chris loves these for her kids...and now she can have them for herself! These pureed fruit and protein packs are great for a pre-workout boost, or during a long bike ride or run. Thanks goodness they are resealable (unlike all those messy gels and powders). You can also have this as a great post-work out treat or a snack on-the-go.) and clicked through -- $3.50/pack! Um... Not gonna happen. Then I thought to myself, surely there is a way to do this on your own? I found these and these reusable food pouches. Now I need to come up with recipes. That is pricey! I've never used a gel flask, so this may be a dumb question, but how are those pouches different from a gel flask? They probably aren't different. I guess just different form factors depending on how you want to use them. Just mulling things over. Since I am mulling over my nutrition and the maybe use of 5 oz gel flask for run portion of Chattanooga, this container stuff is of interest to me too. My lack of wanting to prepare any type of food will stop me from trying to come up with a formula to sort of mimic the fuel for fire, it's going to be hard enough to make a gel |

I'm more convinced that I don't have the brain power (willingness?) to race long course. So many options to work through. I am in awe of ya'll. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED "Fuel for Fire" = banana (yours or off the course--mash into your face yourself; extra points for staying aero while doing so) plus the trusty old dark chocolate bar (carry with). It got me through the bike at Worlds last year. |

Expert 2811 | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED I like Frog Fuel 8 g protein 10 g carbs. I mix it in my water bottle and it tastes like apple juice. 2 per 24 oz bottle. Very mild on my stomach. Very tart if you take it straight up. Looking back I should have carried extra on my bike at Louisville and I might not have bonked (I am not in a place in which I can be emotionally honest and say I bonked). I drank straight water and had nothing to mix in it when I refilled my bottles. A learning experience for this year. |

It got me through the bike at Worlds last year. Yeah, I know that I'm overthinking. I just thought that the product was interesting -- enough so that I clicked through to get more information. Then I was like $3.50?! I'll bet that I can do that for way less! I started way down the "I can do it for way less" path before thinking about if I needed to do that ;-) Ingredients: Banana, Apple, Whey Protein Isolate, Water, Natural Flavor, Cocoa Powder, Citric Acid, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) That should be easy. Like Karen said, smash up a banana, mix in some chocolate whey protein, add apple sauce as needed, put in handy dandy container. Done. OK, now that we've recreated it, do I need it? hahaha FWIW, Jackie is on me about getting in more protein, especially after strength training. I could bring it to work, pop it in the freezer, pull it out and bring it with me to the gym so that it can thaw while I am working out, and then I could eat it on my way home. Now is that enough protein that it's even worth doing? dunno |

I know that I have some protein in my Infinit mix as well but mine is way heavier on carbs than that. Anyway, I think that the main thing is to practice using your nutrition as part of your training. I mean, a long course triathlon is really swim, bike, run, nutrition. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED A lot of experimentation here. It's a brand called Ritter Sport. Has palm oil (I know, neither healthy nor environmentally friendly) which has a higher melting point than most other fats. For a hot race, I break it into chunks in advance and pre-freeze it. In IM Vietnam, it has made it to about 60 km/2 hour-ish on the bike (so I have to bring other nutrition); in most other races, it has lasted most/all of the way (unless, as at Worlds last year, I ate it all in the first 10 miles!). Okay, the latter was not a normal situation--I only had half a bar on board, and hadn't really eaten anything the previous two days. Just a tad hungry, and the chocolate was going down all too well! Usually this chocolate will last about two hours in hot conditions; I have used it as the only fuel (while carrying a backup gu or two) for cooler races where temps don't top 80. For full IM in hot weather, probably would not be my main nutrition source. For starters, it would be sitting twice as long in T1. I would probably use something else; at most take 1/2 a bar to lift my spirits early on. But I do know that some of the pros use dark chocolate at Kona--not sure how they do it. Now I need to come up with recipes. do you have an instant pot/pressure cooker? join the IP community on FB - those people make everything and this type of food lends it self to pressure cooking very well. Maybe we can start our own product - manatee fuel. There's my million dollar idea for the day. You come up with the recipes and I'll be the test kitchen - GO. |

595 | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Almost caught up. I guess my stomach is pretty tolerant so long as its not to hot; if its above 80 everything makes me feel sick. I typically due Gu and Gu roctane (orange, lemon lime, black rasp?) every 45 minutes saving the caffeine for times when I think I will need it. I also eat stroop waffles while waiting to start and about every two hours for longer events. For hydration powerade or beachbody hydrate seem to work find for me. I have only done HIM and Marathon's. No IM yet. |

My performance was not my best & impacted, imo, by the following: Health (been sick the last 2 weeks, & still coughing up loveliness today, 2. Hills (Jesus, Mary & Joseph...I forgot how hilly this race is), & 3. Aid stations 4 miles apart(they were 1-2 miles apart 5 years ago...I planned for this). Note to self: flat marathon next time. |

Congrats on finishing your race. Lots of people like to say that last two weeks doesn't mater. I strongly disagree. I feel like it takes a long time to make gains as we age (I am 41), and we lose those gains much faster. Just my opinion. |
