Originally posted by Hot Runner News Flash-- I actually DO have bones, tendons, and blood vessels in my left hand and can see/feel them today. (Since surgery has been kind of like a Michelin Man blob). I can make a fist, move wrist, spread fingers, etc. All of which I was "allowed" to do before but couldn't exactly. Now if only I could figure out why the skin is way dryer than the other one (which is already pretty bad) and my palm has this weird orange tint. Do they paint you with something during surgery?

This is cool to see, progress! Keep it going, I'm sure that your physical condition is helping your body heal quicker than most.

I could handle cold. I actually like running in cold. It's just all other crazy weird stuff that came this winter... I am getting ready for the weekend and possibly run, or (finally!) some biking, and here comes blastfully awful wind that won't let you even stand or walk. Or it will rain at night and freeze, so it's so slippery you have to watch every single move... No good conditions for mtb either.

I don't want to sound like a malcontent, but the winter in Chicago has been very temperamental this year, and I am very unhappy how it disrupted my training :/

The cold I can cope with cause I can put on more clothes. It really doesn't get that cold here in comparison to some of the places you US Manatees live - no snow. Although having lost 35# since the end of winter I have less insulation this year so that might be an issue.

What I really struggle with is the lack of sunshine. In the dead of winter it is dark till about 7am and then gets dark again by 5pm which is really tough for me to handle. That and the rain, it rains almost every day here in winter whereas in summer we can often go from November to the end of February without it raining at all.

On a positive note we should move to our new office in May and it will have a shower which means I can run at lunch and if I get wet I have somewhere to get warm and dry afterwards, and I have also grown my hair out and I'm embracing my curls so I can make my hair presentable without a blow dryer and straightening irons.

Hate cold and dark, hate winter in general. (Was hoping to avoid a few more weeks of it in your fair country, Stacey!) I can tolerate cold but just find the whole winter thing depressing. Hoping the Hawaii job quest succeeds but not sure what my chances are. I have some interviews at a job fair in Portland at the beginning of April.

Out of all bandages now and cleared to start PT. Of course by the time I got out of the doctor's office, the recommended PT had left for the weekend. I am a PT emergency, I think. Surgeon claims my arm "looks great". (Yeah, right. Huge ugly scar and tons of bruising that appear to be result of surgery as it was not there, at least in that place, pre-op.) Tempted to ask if he filled my elbow with cement by mistake. Sure feels like that. Maybe 20 degrees of mobility? Supposed to keep it out of sling at home and "let gravity pull it straight". So far gravity has not done much, but arm is not happy about it anyway. Ditto for cold--I recall from previous injury that it really seemed to help range of motion to walk while swinging my arms in a running motion; this apparently works much better in 90 degree Vietnamese heat than the blustery 40 degree days we've been having--painful and seemed to tighten things up. Lots of quality time with heating pad. I think if I am going to walk for fitness, will have to use the sling. Either that or relocate immediately to Hawaii! Would do the latter if I could!

Are you moving to Hawaii....? Yay!

Recovery is not a quick process... Let you body heal and don't worry about the bruises and cement!

I cannot agree more on the sun aspect... Last year our winter was all clouds and blah, basically 6 months of November... Extremely depressing. I do not mind winter and snow, when it's accompanied by sun. Because it looks fairy tale gorgeous with sun and snow! Also, all that white gives more reflection of the sun, so there is even more light. So this year's I can't complain, but I also cannot wait until it's over

No idea about Hawaii. Mom is very enthused about it; I'm a bit more cautious as have lived there before (in grad school) and very aware of the "paradise tax" (high cost of living) and some of the downsides of living on an island and Honolulu area in particular. It's a nice place, and there's no winter, but not without its issue--traffic, crime, etc......

Hawaii suffers a chronic teacher shortage due to the high cost of living and is recruiting pretty aggressively at job fairs on the West Coast. That being said, I'm not a specialist in a high-need field; some of the jobs are also in areas that are really too remote for me to feel comfortable living with an 80 year old mom who has some health issues--limited access to good medical care. Also applied to a few private schools where I have some personal contacts, but right now they don't have the right openings. I will interview for Hawaii public schools (it's all one district, makes things easier) and maybe a private one in Portland on April 1; should have a good idea by May how things will work out.

Otherwise will keep looking locally. Boise is undergoing huge growth and there should be positions. Schools aren't that well funded but it is what it is. I have an interview with the coordinator of the Gifted and Talented program on Wednesday. I have kind of an unusual background with a lot of multi-grade and project-based learning experience, and the person who did my initial screening interview thought it might be what that program was looking for. Staying here wouldn't be my first choice (due to winter, mainly) but I can think of far worse places; would rather be here with an interesting job than elsewhere and unemployed. So we shall see.

Appt. with PT first thing tomorrow. I think I have a big hematoma just above where all the hardware is that is really keeping me from moving. As I recall they can help break that up with massage, ultrasound or something. With this kind of injury the big concern is long-term loss of mobility if you don't get moving quite soon after surgery. Things are nailed together very tightly so aside from avoiding weight bearing or lifting anything beyond a full coffee cup (which I can already do without pain), I don't have any restrictions on moving around. Aside from bending, not doing too bad. I do have some extension (which is usually the bigger problem for most people), pretty much full rotation, and strength in my forearm. At least can now put on normal clothes (as long as they don't require pulling things over my head--that is hard) without too much struggle!

Hi Manatees! It's still quite frozen here but we are hearing the birds chirping and it seems we are moving to spring! It's very exciting!

Karen, glad to hear you're healing - even though it is a slow process,

I had my half marathon not last weekend but the one before that. Did i post an update to the group already?? Anyway, it went well and it was the 'nicest' weather we had for any long run this season - it was sunny with low wind. The snow was cleared. I had a goal to see if i could break two hours and i did. I cam in slightly  better than my half last spring at 1:58:55. I am very happy with this - i had some good mental toughness talks with myself to get the last 5k or so done. But i slowed some but hung on pretty well.

I don't have any other races on the schedule at the moment. I do wonder what will be next but March and April will be a bit quieter. My DH is going to China for work for over two weeks at the end of the month so i just have to keep things going. And, in keeping with the JoGo I really need to focus in on my weight a bit. It's not crazy or anything but it's crazy to keep doing the same things and expect to get a different result. Isn't that the saying? Anyway, starting the strength regimen at home and focusing some on eating.

I hope you are all doing well. Manatee meet ups sound very exciting!
