For my first aborted HIM (they cut the bike to 29 miles due to snow, and I switched to the du as water was below 60 and air temps below 40), it was classical music (Grieg). (Maybe cold = Norway = Grieg?) For my first real one, for some reason, "I think I can" from "The Little Engine that Could" (not a song, but whatever) was stuck in my head for most of the bike leg, and for the run, "Battle Hymn of the Republic". For the next one (Vietnam), sadly it was the refrain from "American Pie" (This'll be the day that I die....). And for my last one, a Hawaiian reggae song by Bruddah Iz. I was really jamming for that one. I had them when I ran marathons too, but can no longer remember most of the playlist. Only "California Dreaming" (when I qualified for Trials, of course in California) and "Sound of Silence" (Beijing). Maybe I am mangling the titles. What's weird is I don't pick the music. It just happens, like someone turns on a tape. Yes, I am nuts. I think I did too many solo long runs and swim hypoxic sets when I was a kid, and my brain developed this as a defense mechanism.

It doesn't even have to be a race for me. If I'm on a long run my mind will latch on to a song and play it over and over. It's often a song I don't even know all the words

I wish I could get a song stuck in my hear. I usually think about work, which is a double edged sword. I am spending my run time thinking about work and not enjoying the run, but I have solved so many problems during my run and saved so many bad days, that it balances. That might be weirder than latching onto a song. haha

I do both on any given run and am lucky if I remember the solution to a work problem.  I can't remember the solution, but I can remember the lyrics to the stinking Vanilla Ice song

I guess one of the benefits (or not ) of running with others is that we talk about all sorts of things, so i'm neither thinking about work or getting songs stuck in my head!  When I run alone, my mind wanders a lot, but most often I am thinking about the run itself.

I haven't heard from her for a week or so. She was still entering runs in her log up until last Friday so I just figured her eyes were causing her problems again. But there has been nothing in her log all week. Maybe they are away.

  • I think this is a documented phenomenon, it is called an "Earworm", people with good "musical hearing" can get this.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earworm

I certainly do, all the time. One solution for me was to learn the "I am the very model of a modern Major-General" song by heart and sing it in my head to clear out the earworm song. After that I have a "playlist" that autostarts and it takes almost an hour till it ends.

The second solution was to take my current and new favourite song, listen to it about 60-120 times and it suddenly becomes my new earworm song.

    Problem solved.

I have my "best" runs when I am totally immersed in something totally else, like work. Once I am done with my run I have: solved some work related problems, had my exercise, had my Endorphine rush, I am satisfied with myself for doing the workout and I wasn't bored like usually.

Alright, I am back! My computer took a crap on me and didn't have it yesterday or today (took Monday off to spend with the kids).

    Bike weekend was epic!

Highlight of the weekend was about 60ish miles into and 80 mile ride the second of three days. Here you meet "the wall." I'm not sure what the %grade was, but it had to be around 10% average for about a mile. No switchback where it levels out a bit for a second here or there. Just one slight turn to the left and straight up the whole way. Holy smokes. I was already tired from climbing four 600 ft climbs and fighting 20-30 mph winds all day. So I'm in the smallest gear I have (should have switched cranks with the TT bike) 39x28, pushing around 250 watts (all I could muster at this point), cadence around 50, and I'm going 5 mph! That was the longest 9.5 minutes of my life.

I got to do some backcountry snowboarding at this private "resort" that you get to by sno cat (or in my case, snomobile because I was the only one to make it over the pass before it closed.) If there are too many people for the sno cat they throw out ropes and you get drug behind on skis or snowboard. I kid you not! Then you get there and it's kind of a commune, they cook for you and you help out, washing your own dish and whatnot...you can stay the weekend dorm style or take the sno cat out at the end of the day. Anyway, it was a pretty excellend experience. Additionally, I went and did a little skimo (ski mountaineering) on my XC skis. Now THAT is excellent compliment to running! Here are some photos from the weekend:

That looks like so much fun!! I was fortunate to visit the 10th Mtn Div. Hut system in Colorado. wonderful backcountry skiing and super cozy "huts" that were actually log cabins. Miss it!

Updated. I do a lot of exercise in my mind, the problem is that it does not get translated into actual movement.

Quick pre-blizzard drive by. We're ready for the snow, pantry is stocked, cars are gassed up. We usually lose power during thunderstorms, so we're expecting to lose power with this one, and are as prepared as we can hope to be. If I disappear from BT for awhile due to power outages, find me on Instagram, as my phone has a decent battery and my dog loves to pose!

It seems a bit shallow to say this, since so many of us deal with such intense life issues. But I need to get it off my chest: I am struggling very hard with a bout of depression right now. The last day has been extremely challenging. I say this not because I need anything in particular from the Pod, but because I think too often those of us who struggle with this keep it hidden and put on the happy face. That is not the right thing to do. I wish I had the courage to say something like this to my IRL friends, but saying it to the Pod is a first step. Love you guys!!!

Not only is he a great athlete, he is a great mentor. I have been in his mentor group for the last two rounds and he inspires and encourages our entire group daily.
