I wanted to bounce a scenario off the group to see if anyone has had anything similar happen to them or has knowledge about it. In my half marathon over the weekend, miles 1 through sometime during mile 9 my HR was at a pretty normal, expected rate. I felt good, very good. Around 9 it shot up and stayed up until very close to the end of the race. I felt very crappy and miserable and couldn't wait to be done. The only thing I can say for sure that was going on is I was fighting a lot of knee and Achilles pain at this point. Otherwise nothing was going on with regard to terrain, as you can see if you study the chart. FYI, my race strategy was to break the race into 4 5Ks, gradually picking up some speed on each one, then going a bit harder in the last mile. Obviously this was going fine until whatever happened at 9 happened. Thoughts? I'm wondering about the equipment first, something interfering or having a problem. That is a very substantial jump. Are you actually able to achieve 190-204? At first here, I'm having trouble believing those numbers are correct without more dramatic problems. I've had things go off over 220-240 before, so more obviously something wrong with the measurements. I was tending to agree with you and Karen, Ben, that it probably is a misread by the strap or something. I think my highest HR in general is upper 160s, I'm not sure I've ever hit numbers as high as it shows in the chart. But the fact that it appeared so high and stayed so high was a little concerning. I felt crappy as in I couldn't give any more and felt very sluggish. My mood declined (but part of that may have been mentally fighting the fact that my knees, etc. hurt so bad). At the very end of the race I felt very out of it but either the chocolate milk or chicken noodle soup I drank/ate brought me around quickly and noticeably. Not back to 100%, to be sure, but a very obvious improvement. |

Daniela Ryf did not look like herself at 70.3 Worlds. Either holding back for Kona, or ill, or over-raced or something. I don't think she had a particularly standout performance on any of the legs. Hard to say with women.....Rinny often just comes out of nowhere with few race results for the rest of the year, but she has not been super-consistent. I think on a bad day. Ryf would be beatable by any number of women. She's also a bigger athlete (by pro tri standards) so if it's unusually hot/humid that might not work in her favor. It's Saturday local time. Not sure what that means for you! Start is a bit early too, ~6:30 for the pros. |

I am also curious about Ryf - maybe she's had some recovery time but i have a hard time believing that she's out of it. Would be awesome to have a show down during the run between her and Carfrae ... i just think Rinny is so awesome to watch run. Would love to see Canadian Heather Wurtele do really well - she's been working so hard! For the men's probably Frodeno - though i don't pay enough attention - there are a lot of male pros out there who have a good shot. |

I would be concerned too and probably just wear my HR strap around to do some baseline measurement. If things seem okay, maybe it was just a wonky strap placement and mis-read but maybe also just check in with your Dr to check everything out? Maybe that's my go to response because I am not a dr. |

That is not good to hear at all! I hope that you are listening to your coach or talking to a PT or something. Knee and Achilles pain both suck and both at once is no good at all! Whenever I've seen weird spikes like that during my run, it's been due to HR strap malfunction or static electricity. If your strap is nearing the one year mark, you may need to replace it (I just use off brand Polar straps now). I do think that the heart rate is a malfunction. Even if your max heart rate is 204, I don't think that you'd hit your max rate in these circumstances. |

It would act up from time to time and pick up cadence rather than HR. I'd have to turn it off and turn it on to reset it to normal sometimes. That or the battery is just about dead, and it would jump high for that also. |

I usually get up by 5:30 (even on weekends) so should be able to see at least most of the run live. That's assuming my internet cooperates. Usually better at that hour of the day due to less local online traffic. |

We have been very lucky. Matthew was forecasted to come on shore as a cat 4 (up to 145 sustained winds) in the county just east of me. That would destroy buildings. It would have meant up to 100mph winds for me in downtown Orlando. That would mean lots of trees down, roofs off and no power. Thankfully, just before it came on shore, Matthew decided to be nice and jogged to the east a bit and drop to a cat 3 storm. So, the coast is still getting hammered, but not like it would have, and I am "only" getting up to about 50 mph winds. Gust up to 80. So far, no damage at my house and my power has stayed on. We still have hours to go, but so far this has gone way better than expected! |

I hope that your father-in-law didn't have any major damage. I'm not sure that Robin was able to leave Lake Lure. It's not clear to me which sections of I-26 were reversed (all heading away from the coast and towards Robin). I think that she may be hoping to drive down on Sunday? The new forecast has the storm coming farther north. I liked it better when it was stopping in South Carolina. We don't need it to NC! |

Champion 14677 | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Manatee à trois Originally posted by jmkizer I am home. Safe and sound. I'll be driving down on Sunday, going the long route through Ga to avoid the coast. They had I26 lanes all going north from Charleston to Columbia. Our friends said it was silly. You could NOT get off the hwy at any exit (eve I95) the whole way. I you needed gas, or to pee, you were just screwed. It was a good call for evacuation purposes, but they need to work on execution. Our friends in DeLand Fl are without power and lots of trees down, but so far, okay. I am hoping the storm goes out to sea and fades. It looks like it is going to do a complete circle, though. She said the same stuff, wind and rain are bad, but not too bad. power is still on. Like Janyne stated, we are free and clear over here. FIL is in Port St Lucie, which took a pretty strong shot last night. TW will be checking in on him soon. I am concerned for the NC Manatees, especially Robin, who is supposed to be on the road at some point to this area. I hope things go well for her. Stay safe Hands! |

Ugh, I've been out of pocket so much lately with vacations (I know, poor me) and now this pesky hurricane that I've dropped the ball on this. Please remind me if we are supposed to use the link or go through Randee. I know there are bracelets to be bought. Sorry for my inattention! I asked Yanti to see if she could help promote this page. I'm hoping that she has the time. I think that her name on a post would give it some added weight. Randee, correct me if I'm wrong but you'd like some help defraying the cost of the bracelets themselves. The American Cancer Society fundraising is a separate endevour, correct? Judi, is there anything from Megs Miles that would help use with Strides for Steve? I can ask if Megs Miles can run some miles for Steve. The page is pretty strict about asking for donations to other financial causes. They don't want everyone asking for money for XYZ cause because it detracts from Meg's legacy. However, we can ask these things on our own pages and most of us are friends apart from the Megs Miles page. What I meant was that they sound like they are really well organized. Can we steal some organization ideas from them? I am not a page admin there, but if you ask to join the group, you could ask the page admin's for help. Your best bets are (Robert) Keith Cartwright and Dana Taylor. Tracey Outlaw and Tiffany Blair Eisentrout. Also Brooke Roney. They are the ones who really admin the page and do a lot of fundraisers. |

Veteran 2441 Western Australia | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Manatee à trois Hi manatees I hope you have all had a good week and that you are safe from the hurricane. I ended up going away without much notice to Phil's parents for the week. They have sold their house and are down sizing after 26 years on 5 acres so there is some major cleaning up and sorting out to do. Good news is that they have found something smaller that they like. I didn't get any training done but spent the week lifting and carrying flat out helping Phil clean out 2 of his dads 4 sheds while his brother and sisters sat inside and drank cups of tea. I must admit I've been inattentive to other Manatee happenings lately too - I'm glad to hear the storm is turning out to be less intense than feared and it sounds like people are all staying safe! Yeah my original idea of sending me a few bucks was just to offset the cost of the bracelets. They cost me $115 (I think) and I've gotten about 25% of that back from manatee donations. Given the choice between the two, I'd RATHER see donations made to the ACS directly - so I'm glad that we could set that site up with the guestbook and all. I plan on dropping a note in the mail to Steve's family so they can see it too. It's starting to get a little traction too!! Don't forget we can post pictures too - so if you dedicate a race to Steve be sure to take pics! |
