Thanks for all the great advice.  I have never really done much as far as endurance running.  I was a running back when I played football, so my focus was sprinting, I never had to running more then 40 yards at a time.  A few years ago I bought a Klein road bike, but have never really train with it, my longest ride was 75 miles. I went for one ride last year and did 50 miles off the couch.  As for the swim I know how to swim well enough to have fun with my kids at the pool.

I hope that gives some kind of back ground.

hey ben.  i don't think you'll have any problems following one the plans here on BT to bust out a some races this year and see improvement in your times with each new race.  i also think a goal of an OLY to wrap the season up is an awesome idea.  now, looking at your logs, you're gonna want to do something about hitting the water.

when is the first race you are eyeing?

I think I'll try one in May, I have about five or six that I'm trying to decide between, I've been sitting here all morning with my credit card in hand trying to map out the year.

I start swimming with a coach in Jan, she is my daughter swim coach so she and my 9 year old can teach me a thing or two.  It will be fun to train with my daughter.

As far as sprints go is it reasonable to do one every other month or is that to much?

Loved the bike story, been there done that.

that's awesome and funny!  right on w/ what Linda said.   May leaves you plenty of time to get ready.

pull the trigger on the first one, print that receipt out and tape it to your bathroom mirror.  DO IT!!!  YOU WILL ROCK IT!!!

and come back here 5 minutes from now when you've done that and give us details on the race.

icky43 - 2009-12-27 2:39 AM It's midnight and I'm watching the 2008 Kona Tri. and looking over all of your up coming races, and looking at all the races I have access to.  As a newbie to the sport, what is reasonable to expect?  How long do I need to build a base before doing my first Sprint? Is wanting to do an Oly by the end of the year to much?  Any advice would be great.

Thanks

[.... ]With a training plan and a race in front of you it is suprising how you will be motivated.

Man, ain't that the truth??!! Throwing down money for a race and staring down a training plan is all I need to do to motivate myself to do things that, sitting on my arse doing nothing, I'd never think possible. One step, one minute, one mile at a time... I say go for the end-of-year Olympic! And no, to me a sprint every other month is not too much. It's probably enough to keep it fun and inspiring to make you train harder to do better on the next one!!

Had a GREAT run today, without meaning to. Don't you love it when that happens? I planned to just slug out 10 miles nice and easy and ended up with one of my faster times for this route. Go figure! Woot!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SAM!

Hey Sam.....Happy Birthday to you!!!! what are you doing for the big day?

Happy  Birthday Sam!!

Thanks all - I'm a little late in posting my birthday activities.  I had a 1 hr. bike trainer ride and 1 hr. swim then sat in traffic for 2 hrs. to go to my MILs house.  We spent the night w/ the kids.  They had a great time.  My at some point SIL made a really yummy chocolate raspberry cake for me.  So all in all, it was a good day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hope everyone had a happy holiday!

Day 4 of no training for me. Blizzard shut down everything - YMCA is still closed...streets and sidewalks too slippery to run or bike on....I don't own a trainer.  I'm sitting here feeling myself getting weaker by the minute.

On a positive note, I did go to swimplan.com and I love it! I printed-out my swim plan for tomorrow and can't wait to try it. It has me doing some strokes just using my left arm, then right arm....all sorts of cool stuff. Even incorporates some backstroke into my swim. Just what I was looking for, so, thanks to whomever put up that link Kiss

How do you guys handle not being able to train for four days in a row? Can you definitely tell a difference when you get back to it? Moreover, I think I've been over training, so the extended rest may have been good for me. Anyone care to look at my training log and see if I've been over doing it? The only thing I have to say is that I'm used to exercising for 30-45 mins three times a week, so anything less than that and I will get frustrated. It's been difficult for me to find a training plan that will take into account that I've got a good bike base, but just need to concentrate on swim and run.

Fixed that for you....you are welcome

When I take days off it seems to help me...up to a point.  If I take 1-4 days completely off (or maybe just slip some easy core work in) then I find when i come back I am stronger.  If O am off over a week or 10 days I do feel a little decline in fitness, especially for me I feel it in the pool and on the bike more than the run.

I don't know which plan you are using but maybe a swim or run focused from BT would help....and I really LOVE swimplan.com...it is super.

Hey guys.  No time right now to get caught up - I'll try to get to that tomorrow (if I can get my 15yo off the computer long enough!).  Just wanted to pop in and say I hope everyone had a good holiday.  We actually ended up with a bit of a white Christmas.  It's been snowing off and on since Friday morning.  We still had our race on Saturday morning (it's called the Frostbite Series for a reasonSmile - they run it no matter what the weather).  I did OK, 20:48 for the 2 miles.  And I found out that running in 25*F with a 16* windchill and wind gusts up to 30 mph really isn't bad if you're dressed correctly.  My toes were a little numb for the first 1/2 mile or so but I warmed up pretty quickly.

I know I mentioned before that my mom was wanting me to go down to Little Rock with her and my dad for my aunt and uncle's 50th wedding anniversary on New Year's Eve.  I really wasn't wanting to go but I'm thinking I might now.  I found out on Christmas Eve that one of my cousins has colon cancer.  Apparently it wasn't caught very early and it's already starting to spread.  Surgery and radiation is planned.  She's only a couple of years older than me - single mom, 3 kids.  So I may end up going down to see her and some other relatives I haven't seen in about 12 years.

Time to make some dinner.  Hope all are having a good weekend!

I had a milestone this AM. I just ran the farthest I have ever run in my life: 13.61 miles in 2:15. I am sore, especially my finicky hamstrings. *Whew*. Anyway the marathon training continues. Those numbers will be growing in the coming weeks. My coach has me doing 22 miles in February some time.

Doug

That is so AWESOME.  The distance and the pace.  If I remember right your marathon amd the one I am doing are on the same weekend....03.21.10....  Is that right?

You will be ready for that 22 before you know it.  What are you thinking about for your nutrition?  I am still thinking about mine after my "issues" at Augusta HIM.

Headed out for my 8 miler right now.

Steve

I just started using a fuel belt and have not figured the nutrition plan out. I will take fulladvantage of the aid stations as I have a fairly iron stomach. I expect I will be bringing some GU's and some shot blox.

Great job on your new distance!

I am not too finicky when it comes to nutrition (thank goodness!) but stashed a package of Fig Newtons in my pack during my marathon and let me tell you, having solid food around mile 23 was the best.thing.ever.  Not kidding.  I was so tired of squishy gels and HEED that the Newtons were heaven at that point.  I now bring them on all long runs and rides.

Hope everyone had a great holiday!  I found it hilarious that 75% of my gifts were training apparel, bike gadgets, cold wear gear and athlete nutrition cookbooks oh and an entry into Augusta 70.3- wooohoo!  Now only 10 months to train

I am sorta giving myself a break until the first of the year, I did a quick run on Christmas day (to get some breathing room from the family) and did a super easy 10 mile bike ride with my sister and this week I am focusing on just swimming and yoga.  I already entered my HIM training plan into my calendar and will be ready to roll after the first of the year (if all goes well with PT!)

I hope everyone had a great Christmas.  Mine was great.  Lots of time with family and too much food!  I was just at the doctor's and had an xray of my foot because of some pain I've been having.  Of course, she could tell me nothing.  (I wasn't really expecting any answers, as it was my PCP and those are the rules - go there first.)  She did say that I have a bone spur but it should not be causing the type of pain I described.  Anyway, I have the number for an orthopedic surgeon to call in the morning.  It is very frustrating not having any answers!  Have a good week!  Another short week for me!!!

I second the 305.  I never leave for a run without it.
Was originally concerned with the size and weigth of this one, but the 305 has never bothered me...worn it two years now.   Thought about the waterproof watch, but don't really think it would add much value for me.

Crapp I should have gotten it while it was on sale for $137 on Amazon.  One of my friends at the gym told me she loves the Garmin..poop.

She says you cant use it indoors though but she thought you could use the 310 indoors because you can disable the GPS.  Is that true?

Thanks. :-)

dbw27

You definitely can use the 305 inside by disabling the GPS.    I do it all the time when I bike on my CT or run on a TM.  Very easy.  When you get your unit I can walk you through it.

Karen--your foot worries me.  I have a stress fracture of the 4th met.  It did not show up in an x-ray because the bone had not started healing it.  It took a bone scan for me to finally idenitfy the issue.

Sam--glad you had a great day AND got all that training done to boot.  What did Tony get you? new race wheels?

Chris-really sorry to hear about your wife and her family issues.  That is really tough to go through anytime of year, but especially around the holidays.

I made it to Minocqua mid afternoon to about 20" of snow on the ground and my beautiful lake is nearly frozen.  While I much prefer it here in the summer, it is pretty to look at through the window.

SSMinnow - 2009-12-27 5:43 AM I know it is not Wednesday, but with less than a week to go in the New Year,  do you have any volume goals you are trying to break?

So anything you want to accomplish in the last 5 days of the year?..... and drinking an extra six pack doesn't count John, Andy and Tony.....and neither does J&C Birdy.

I want to hit 1600mi cycling - need about another 50...  3 trainer workouts scheduled, so I should get there with no problem..  I would like to hit 200mi running (way light I know) but I am not sure I can hit 15mi in 4 days without injuring myself and still be able to hit the ground running (literally) on Jan 1 for my 31 day run challenge...  50mi of swimming for the year achieved....  I am happy with that number, I could barely swim 50yds when I got in the pool in April...
