I ended up going away without much notice to Phil's parents for the week. They have sold their house and are down sizing after 26 years on 5 acres so there is some major cleaning up and sorting out to do. Good news is that they have found something smaller that they like. I didn't get any training done but spent the week lifting and carrying flat out helping Phil clean out 2 of his dads 4 sheds while his brother and sisters sat inside and drank cups of tea. That's a tough decision to make, but I'm glad they were able to do it before a crisis. Will they be near you guys? As for doing the work... #manateestrong |

Oh boy, siblings! It's funny how dynamics work within families. At least you and Phil can be proud you did you share (and theirs, too!) It sounds like the move has been good for his parents and well-received, not always the easiest thing for older folks to downsize and let go of land/possessions. |

Yeah my original idea of sending me a few bucks was just to offset the cost of the bracelets. They cost me $115 (I think) and I've gotten about 25% of that back from manatee donations. Given the choice between the two, I'd RATHER see donations made to the ACS directly - so I'm glad that we could set that site up with the guestbook and all. I plan on dropping a note in the mail to Steve's family so they can see it too. It's starting to get a little traction too!! Don't forget we can post pictures too - so if you dedicate a race to Steve be sure to take pics! Also don't forget your bracelets. I have TONS. ^ Folks, pay attention to the link above. We'd like to publicize this as much as possible. We can post to TT and COJ and some outside groups. Other suggestions? Fundraising ideas?
Ugh, I've been out of pocket so much lately with vacations (I know, poor me) and now this pesky hurricane that I've dropped the ball on this. Please remind me if we are supposed to use the link or go through Randee. I know there are bracelets to be bought. Sorry for my inattention! I asked Yanti to see if she could help promote this page. I'm hoping that she has the time. I think that her name on a post would give it some added weight. Randee, correct me if I'm wrong but you'd like some help defraying the cost of the bracelets themselves. The American Cancer Society fundraising is a separate endevour, correct? Judi, is there anything from Megs Miles that would help use with Strides for Steve? do you have google wallet or PayPal? paypal - it's my username at hotmail dot com |

Wooo I'm finally "racing"! Kind of. I'll be running a comfortable pace with the group I helped coach for the last 4 months. It will be fun, and great weather is in the forecast. Jim I see they've removed the "out and back" from the IMLOU bike course - otherwise I'd have you pour out a little Gatorade for me at mile 19 where I crashed last year - hope the weather is good for you all! Happy b-day Laura! Exciting about the bike! |

#manateestrong I think if it had been totally their choice they would have stayed put and just changed some things a bit, but too late cause they have accepted an offer on their place and now have till mid November to move out. I think this is mainly due to their eldest daughters constant nagging at them, she farms about 40 minutes drive from them and stays there whenever she is in town which is probably 2 nights a week. Does nothing while she is there's but complains that the big house is too much for her mum to keep clean. They are in their mid 80s and still in pretty great health and their mental capacity is still all there. When I say they are downsizing they are moving from a very large 4 bed, 2 bathroom place on 5 acres to a 3 bed, 2 bathroom place on 1/4 acre so they still have room for a veggie garden and Pa still has a shed to potter about in. If their eldest girl had her way she would have moved them into a 2 bed, 1 bath unit in the nursing home. She was adamant that they should only have one bathroom to clean and suggested that if the toilet was too far from the bedroom that her mum should just start wearing adult diapers to bed at night. She very nearly got decked by 3 people for that comment, but she had absolutely no idea how insulting it was. Anyway she and Phil's older brother (who is nearly as bad went out to the farm yesterday) and while they were gone their mum and dad out an offer in on house they saw on Thursday and both loved. No doubt they will get in trouble for it and their youngest sister will get in trouble for letting them do it. Before we left I said to them "I know I'm just the daughter in law and I don't get a 'vote' but it's your money, your home, you have to live there, have what you want. If you love this house then you should just buy it." The youngest daughter and Phil agreed with me and his mum's response was "of course you're family and that makes 5 against 2 cause we love the place." There is a reason that Phil and I live 500 miles away and it pretty much has his eldest sisters name written all over it cause we couldn't deal with her interference in our lives any more. Ahhh families. Edited by StaceyK 2016-10-07 5:50 PM |

As I recall your first "marathon" was stumbling home somewhere north of 42km while sauced and wearing jeans and a shirt on a very cold night. Not running shoes either. You are every kind of awesome and I do mean that sincerely! I've told all sorts of people ... actually, I told that guy who rode the TdF and is now doing Kona about your epic cycle misadventures and even he thinks you're mad Respect |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Manatee à trois Yay--Kona streaming is working (so far) this year! Off to ride trainer. I think I have this timed right--One hour trainer and 15 minute run (doing baby maintenance workouts lately). So I will get to watch key parts of the run and not miss the finish! |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Manatee à trois I cut that one a little close! Finished my brick run and caught Frodeno's last mile. Now for the women--Rinny trying to run her way into third. Hope they will get off of the guys pretty soon and show the women....I love to watch her run, and really empathize with her plight on the bike. It's tough being a lightweight and getting one's a$$ kicked on the bike by the big girls! Back to the Kona show.... |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Manatee à trois Everyone must be asleep! One advantage of living here on the other side of creation from most of you--I am wide awake (4 PM here) for the final hour of Kona! Does anyone else find it addictive? It's almost more interesting than the pros (Frodeno and Ryf made it somewhat of a snoozer again this year)--I know every one of those people has an amazing story to tell! And I know I'm going to bawl for the last finisher, and the person who just misses the cutoff! |

I too like watching the AGers, especially the ones coming in so close to cut off, but sometimes sleep and or dog walking gets in the way The pro race was kind of boring, especially the women's! |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Manatee à trois Yep, cried three times--for the last official finisher (a woman with about 2 1/2 minutes to spare), then, just as they're all holding hands to sing "Hawaii Aloha" (basically, the national anthem; they played it when I got my master's from UH), one last woman staggers across the line at 17:07. I have no idea who these ladies are, but they're about my mom's age. I am truly a sucker for human drama of the sports variety. Then I lost it again on "Hawaii Aloha", just 'cause I miss Hawaii and haven't been back for a couple of years. If I ever actually managed to get to and finish at Kona, I might well be bawling for hours. |
