I'll be lifeguarding in the am, then we are going to a forging workshop and making Damascus knives, then maybe going to dinner. Sunday is lifeguarding again for a few hours, then in the afternoon going out to a local brewery with friends. One of the days I will be squeezing in a new batch of kombucha (probably Sunday). Depending on timing, I may try to fit in a ride or run. |

On Sunday, I'll get out my gravel bike for a spin in Umstead and see my parents. |

My SIL's birthday is in a couple of days, so coupled with father's day, my nieces and nephew are coming into town and we are doing a boat tour of one of the chain of lakes we have around here. Another brother and his family will come into town for it too, so we will have 1/2 the siblings and their families together for the first time since COVID. Other than that I will do a currently long for me run tomorrow and a "hill" ride Sunday and hope that the Saharan Dust doesn't kill me! Edited by amd723 2021-06-18 3:06 PM |

297 | Subject: RE: Manatees Dooo Eeeet!!! Checking in after a hiatus out of town for a while. We spent the last 11 days touring colleges for daughter who is an upcoming senior. Checked out Idaho, Montana and Washington. Her criteria for schools was (1) major, (2) fishing nearby, and (3) xc skiing closeby. Not necessarily in that order. I think her best choice for schools is looking like Idaho. My preference for places to visit her in college puts Montana in the lead. Missoula was pretty spectacular, and the fishing in the area is top notch. With that said - has anyone here ever done IM Cour'de lane? The race is next weekend - I was a little bummed we came back so soon. But man oh man, that place is SPECTACULAR. Driving from the east into the area, the lake is just stunning. If I can get into hills, I might see a 70.3 there in my future. A friend of mine has done the full IM there twice and told me the other day he is hoping to retire there some day (from CA). Hope all is well with everyone and your summers are starting on a positive note. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatees Dooo Eeeet!!! I've done the 70.3 once. Assuming the course has not changed: Basically, it's quite scenic, but tough. Not one I'd recommend for a firsr HIM or full. Here are my impressions: Cold lake swim, potentially choppy but nothing really dramatic. (There's a seaplane landing strip in the middle of the lake, they don't close it for the race, and if someone takes off or lands at that time, the waves can get "interesting".). The swim is well set-up and not too crowded. Bike is VERY hilly--very little flat at all. There are several very steep climbs, some longer slower climbs, lots of rollers, and some false flats, all through the course. Winds can be significant and shift as the day goes on--typical in that part of the country. I really struggled with cramping because I was already cold from the swim, would struggle up the hills and then freeze on the downhills. I don't think I could feel my feet until about mile 4 of the run. But then, I don't tend to do well with cold, and I was racing after just a few weeks back from Vietnam--maybe it would go better for someone bigger or more acclimatized?! The run is pleasant, rolling with no major hills, but some long gradual ones. Basically a two-lap course through some residential neighborhoods and lakeside parks and multi-use paths. There are some long stretches without much shade that can be tough once the heat starts climbing mid-day. Of all the HIM I've done, this one had the biggest temperature difference from start to finish. (I was out there about 5:20 or 5:30? Don't remember.) It will be even bigger for someone who's pushing 7-8 hours. It was in the 40's and breezy at the start, high 90's by the time the BOP was finishing. That can be challenging to deal with in terms of gear, nutrition, hydration, etc. and one of the main reasons it would be tough for beginners. It's not a good course to go after a best time. It is a beautiful destination race, though, and could be combined with a family road trip. Great community support (at least pre-Covid), volunteers, etc. and very well-organized. Just don't expect an easy race! |

[/Oh wow, sorry this happened, but I guess I'm not surprised considering the border is still closed. Still it's a bummer for everyone who's been training. Interesting that the contract may not be renewed. Assuming what you're hearing is true, I wonder why no to IM but yes to Super League? Fewer people, so less impact on residents? ETA: I really didn't know anything about Super League - and still don't, but it seems like limited sprint distances races around the globe.

For sure. I definitely think 'buyer beware' as Penticton, BC found out when they had Challenge take over IM and the numbers tanked. Maybe just a negotiating technique but at the same time Ironman is a very consistent draw with people spending big bucks. I would be sad to see it go as i do really feel it is one of the best destinations races. It's perfectly set up for the volume of people - so many good accommodation options. Really beautiful. Anyway. |

There was a local 5K race that some of the fast guys in the running club were doing. I wanted to do the race but wasn't willing to pay $65 to sign up for it last minute (I just learned about it the Monday before the race and similar races in the area are $30). So...for FUN I did my first Strava Art on the 19th. I got the idea for it about two weeks before the pair of Triathlons I did last month and was just waiting for a quiet weekend to complete it. The course was a lot harder than I thought it would be I got it done and it was excited to use the Rainbow Emojo to add to the effect of the route. https://www.strava.com/activities/5495272259 |

One side says the locals love it, it brings in tons of money and the other says anyone outside of hospitality business are sick of the events and the partial closure of the one fast road going from Quebec to the area. The latter apparently coming from people living in the area. So, it will be interesting to see how this shakes out. |

I mean, they let people attend in-person hockey games in Montreal (inside) but not outside endurance events? Anyway, it super sucks for those who were signed up. |
