Trainer rides are often more uncomfortable than riding on the rode where you are moving around move, eg, off the saddle more.

That's generally true, but the specific discomfort mentioned sounds a bit odd. The hip impingement I wouldn't expect to really change and it's more indicative of the fit. It's really something that should have been taken care of when setting up in the first place. The shorter cranks can help get a little lower without that impingement occurring, but I'm wondering about the quality of the current fit. Maybe bumping up against some other adjustment limit of the bike?

I've gone through 2 seperate seat tests, one for my ISM and one that resulted in a Specialized Power on my road bike.  Both of those test periods taught me exactly what Ben stated above.  If you want to go pay $$$ for a fit, then that is not a bad idea.  Try to find someone that is good, because the fit plays a big part in saddle comfort.  However, I am also a proponent of making your own subtle changes to improve your fit, if you have the ability.  Seat up/down/forward/back, bars forward/back/up/down, spacers, etc.  You'd be surprised on the differences you can get out of the equipment you have. From there, cranks, stem, bars, etc.  If the bike fit works for you, then the saddle should be one of the last parts in the equation, at least it was for me.  Just make sure to change only one thing and mark where you started.

My two cents, your experience may be completely different.

When I had my bike fit for Andre part of it was a saddle fit. I believe that this is part of the Selle SMP saddles system that the store stock.

The fit involved sitting on a gel heat pad for about 3 minutes, when you stood up the pad very clearly showed the width of your "sit bones" and any other contact points. From this Michael could then pick your saddle. He chose three for me but indicated the one that he thought was the best which he put on the bike and made me ride for about 20 minutes. It was instantly comfortable. He then made me try at least 4 or 5 others, but I could tell with them within a couple of minutes that they weren't right. He then put the "right one" back on and left me for 15 minutes.

The process was great and the saddle has been fantastic my problem has been lack of T I T S.

Oh yeah, I watched it, but i got bored with it before the end of its run and don't think I ever did find out who killed Laura!

I have to agree the second season is not as dynamic as the first one. I read some reviews that said it was never revealed... We shall see..
I watch a lot of TV shows, but I couldn't watch more than one episode of Twin Peaks. It has a similar "ending" to "Lost" as far as I know, I didn't like either of them. I am watching Madam Secretary now,
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3501074/
and I love it.

I never wore heels, except for the two years of Hungarian folk-dance I used to do in high school. The dancing boots had 1/2 inch heels, but I guess that doesn't count. :-P

Can't remember it being a big deal then, but I'm not always with it on such things. Had been considering it. Wasn't sure with the short run. Sounds like it's better that I waited as I would not have appreciated various shots either, not like I do now.

ETA: There is more of this in progress. Can't remember if it continues, is a remake, or what though.

Not a reply to anybody in particular, but on the subject of trainer distraction--I also find I can't really take in any content for any kind of intense ride (over about 80% FTP). My current favorites are a series of videos on various scenic courses in Europe shot by some German cyclists who always look happy to be out there. (On a few videos, you even get to see the beer stop at the end!) Here's a sample "virtual ride" from (I believe) the area around Bolzano and Brennero in northern Italy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRDPsA1Mat8 It also includes music which helpfully seems to be close to 90 RPM. I tend to have a sluggish cadence and really should be increasing it to about that (since I'm not big/strong enough to push a high gear for very long, but have a good engine), so I find the music, monotonous as it is, really helpful for that. I've done a lot of bike touring in Europe so have ridden some of these routes (or similar ones) in real life, and it brings back happy memories and helps me forget I'm grinding away in the guest bedroom at 5:XX AM, going nowhere. For another great video source, search for Bob Ryskamp on Youtube. Lots of alpine passes and such. If you search "virtual cycling" you will find a lot of similar stuff. There are even a few bike-eye videos of someone taking a 20-minute FTP test on the road with a countdown clock. Used one of those for my last test!

I must be slow-witted or something--I can actually watch one of these scenery plus music videos for over 2 hours on the trainer without getting crazy bored. Maybe it comes from growing up as an only child with quiet parents, or getting into marathons at 14, or just being mentally suited for endurance sports--I don't seem to need a lot of stimulation for some reason. I have never understood people who say they are bored while running. As long as there is any scenery to watch, I am happy. That's my problem with the treadmill--due to some visual issues, I've never been able to watch a video or TV while running without getting vertigo, and staring at the wall drives me batty!

I just got a power meter and a new source of amusement for really intense stuff is trying to keep the power steady within an interval. I am not very good at it! I saw an interview with Mirinda Carfrae where her power variability for this crazy long ride (5 hours?) was close to zero. How the heck does she do that?

Ref Boredom on the trainer. What sort of trainer are you using Tom? Are you following some sort of workout when you go on there or are you just going on to spin for xx minutes? What metric are you using to gauge your effort? Power/time/speed/heart rate? Are you/have you tried using/looked into the many trainer apps that are available? Trainerroad /zwift/cycleops vt etc.

Total subject change, and for that I apologize.  I'm having trouble concentrating at work because I just found out Dad's house has its first showing tomorrow after only being on the market a week!  I'm excited, scared, and nervous, but mostly excited.  Can't. Concentrate. On. Writing. Code.

good luck with the showing!!!

I've spent the last couple days in heels (hells) because the brass is in town. Today they came up to see our little Santa Fe office. They just left. Immediately the heels come off and I'm checking in here. I just hope I can run later after two days in those torture devices!

Melanie, good luck with the showing and with concentrating on writing code!

TJ, i wear heals almost every workday, but, the heals are usually only about 1/2-1 inch!!  If I wear higher I am miserable!!

Good luck with the showing! Let us know how it went I had to wear heels at the place I used to work for. The best way to learn how to wear those bastards was when I had to runnn to catch the train. And it was winter and very snowy. And there was a crowd around me that also wanted to make it to the train. The other times when I can manage the balance in high heels is when I'm drunk But that doesn't happen often anymore (thankfully!)

I was into Twin Peaks when it first came out.  I think that it has something to do with loving coffee.

That's a damn fine cup of coffee!

Speaking of mountain bikes, does anyone here use a mountain bike on their trainer (after swapping to a smooth trainer tire)?  Kevin has a old road bike dedicated to trainer use and it's finally pretty much died.  The last time he took it in the mechanic said as much and he's gotten another year out of it.  Anyway, he was thinking of putting his 26er on the trainer (which, sadly, would leave him plenty of bikes for outdoor use).

Haven't done it, but could swap the tire & skewer out. There could be some size issue with some trainers, namely with the resistance unit coming into contact with the tire, but might not know until you try it. If it fits it should be fine.

Late to the game, but I've put mounties on several different trainers (1 fluid, 2 mag) as well as my foldie (admittedly it's a pretty rugged foldie!) and it's been fine.

I also seem to be extremely hungry lately after my workouts and probably have been eating too much right after my runs. Anyone have any tips on how to deal with that. It seems especially bad after longer runs and after swimming. I second Sean's statement on no blizzard here in Texas. 70s yesterday, but definitely windy. On my run yesterday I pretty much had front wind the first half of my run and then, would you not, when I started heading back it stopped, sigh.
seeing as you have finished doing your budget -want to come do mine now?
If it covers a free trip to Australia sure

I've seen her at tax time. She may get that desperate

Oh did I omit some details? "Doing my budget" involves dealing with 5 school principals 2 government departments 2 controlling companies 1 accountant from one of the controlling entities that I truly think still believes the only place for women is in the kitchen, and a government funding formula that takes a 5 page spreadsheet to spit out an approximation of what you might get. Then once you get it in the black you have to get it past the Board of Directors which includes 2 accountants that like to question the assumptions that you have made on absolutely everything. At the same time as doing this you also need to complete the financial reports from last year, deal with the auditors, staff 5 schools for the start of the new school year. Relocate the new staff from where ever they are to where they need to be and make sure that they have to appropriate licences and clearances to teach. Sort the school bus routes for 150 students that attend 2 of the schools. Sort the new pay rates for all staff for the new year. And answer a billion questions from staff who come back after 4 weeks of leave, all tanned and relaxed. These questions can be about anything from the latest update of the software package (that you don't use) to the new corporate branding scheme, oh and because they leave everything to the last minute of course they need to know NOW. Add into the mix that your incompetent boss left at the end of the year after taking 2 months "sick leave" and having a public rant at the end of year function (her leaving is a good thing) but they aren't replacing her, which is ok because they are putting place support for the school principals so it will all be good. Right. Then to top all this off school starts again for the new year on Feb 1. Jan 26 is a public holiday for Australia Day, so lets throw a 2 day state wide PD course in at the end of January that is compulsory for all staff to attend. But it's ok, cause to help me do this I have a salt of the earth assistant who pays the bills and deals with the majority of payroll. I do actually normally really like my job and the majority of people I work with. I would just happily give it to anyone who will take it between December and February. Sorry about the vent. I always lose a little grip on sanity at this time of the year and not being able to SBR at present as cut off one of my main stress releasing avenues.
Wow o.O I am so glad I don't have your job right now. :-D You have my sympathies.

YOWZA!  As much as I would love to come to Australia, I don't think there's enough money in the world to make me want to deal with all that - Stacey, you're a helluva lot tougher than I am, my poor little pea brain would have lost it a LONG time ago!

Disclaimer:  Yes, I already KNOW that my poor little pea brain lost it a long time ago, but if I hadn't lost it already, this would do it!

She's tougher than Kingsley and I put together.

She's Mastiff Octomom and can sherpa for Kingsley AND I at the same time. And we are HOPELESS cases. Hopeless.

Nice video. I've vacationed in that area before and it's absolutely beautiful. Always lots of cyclists. Some of these roads are scary to drive with the car and I don't know how some of these cyclists take some of these corners in the speed they are taking them. Lots of 180 turns, sharp left, right, left, rights and lots of roads with a side drop of 200-300 yards. Definitely a good place to learn bike handling. You either learn it very well or you won't live to tell anyone how poorly you did

Yes I have watched Twin Peaks. The show was very good, but fell off at the end. If you like Twin Peaks, make sure you watch the Psych episode "Dual Spires". I thought it was great but I love that show.

Also just checking in, I am about to start a 12 week training plan either Sunday or Monday. It will be the first time I have tried a dedicated plan. My main issue will be the running since I am only really allowed to run once a week. I am hoping to do some of the easy run workouts on an elliptical or stair climber or something else. I know an elliptical is not the same as running, but at least it is something.

Good Luck Racing Manatee's this weekend!!!

I've been watching season 1 of Fargo (on Hulu) and I find that it's got a quirkiness similar to Twin Peaks.  You know, in case Mary G needs a post-Twin Peaks obsession

I'm out! LOL

Last weekend we went to FL for a combo vacation/clean out grandma's condo. And of course while we are there "hey the Miami Half marathon is that weekend so let's register!"
It's Miami they said!
Overdress while you are training to simulate the heat my coach said.

Game day temperature was 46 degrees with 30mph wind gusts - I kid you not. Well anyway long story short I ran probably exactly where I should be for this time of year etc. My coach was actually really pleased because despite the wind I pushed through and my paces didn't fall off. So apparently I have "good durability." yay me!

in other news, I see a little bit of chatter on what to watch on the trainer. I've been watching The Man in the High Castle - LOVE IT. Only 1 episode left. I have a bike test on Tuesday. Trying to decide what to watch or if I'm better off with music. I'd love to get your thoughts!

Another weekend is upon us - who else is racing - besides Yanti & Kingsley? GO TEAM!

Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Closed

Originally posted by emcmino  My main issue will be the running since I am only really allowed to run once a week. I am hoping to do some of the easy run workouts on an elliptical or stair climber or something else. I know an elliptical is not the same as running, but at least it is something. Good Luck Racing Manatee's this weekend!!!

When my running has been limited, two things have been recommended to me.  The evil stair stepper (the one that looks like a flight of neverending stairs) and deep water running.

Coming off of a tibial stress fracture in 2000, stevebradley made his way into triathlon. Now he has over 60 triathlons completed and is one of the most active mentor groups on BT.

Not only is he a great athlete, he is a great mentor. I have been in his mentor group for the last two rounds and he inspires and encourages our entire group daily.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
