THANK YOU

for all the wonderful wishes and congrats on my 2nd Ironman finish.

It was a lot harder and meant more to me than my 1st finish. Really rough day for everybody. 60-odd fished out of the swim and a bunch more didn't make cutoff. Lot of wipeouts on the bike due to slick puddly roads and wicked winds. Then a lot of people (even Australians) went hypothermic on the run too. It was bloody cold. DNF rate was colossal.

I was very, very blessed to finish and did not expect to (even before the race).

It's the only IM swim I've ever been in where it was really long enough and I was glad to have it done with.

Miriam (the DFL) is a legend and everything that Ironman is all about.

Now I'm gonna do a little 10K recovery swim / cooldown this weekend ... I am seriously fachmied in the head.

GO RACING MANATEES!

I gotta go to bed (recovery is going very well by the way, shockingly well! I should not train for more races! Hahahaha ... OK, no).

I was all set to congratulate Yanti, wish our racers good luck, and send healing thoughts to our DL list.
Then you posted that.....and now that's all my head has room for! That looks amazing.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO racing Manatees!! Yanti, maybe you should *recover* a little before you race again?  Oh wait, that just wouldn't be right.

DLers, let's keep up the healing so we can get the heck off that list.  We've all been on there way too long.

Yanti, I totally missed your IM finish.  Way to go, Rockstar Racer!!!!!!!

Wow, Janyne, that cake makes me feel hungry and 5 lbs. heavier at the same time.  I'm so conflicted!!

Hope everybody has a good weekend.

Go Judi and Yanti! My race could be a real suffer fest because I am going with Yanti's don't train method.

One good thing though is that I have aged up so instead of being in the last wave I will be in the second so that gives me a bit more time before I am totally last across the line. Oh and more people to mow over the top of me in the swim.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Four pages behind, just caught up.  I am up to my eyeballs in finals.  I am not sure I will ever get done all the marking....

Why, why, why must we stuff foodstuffs inside of other foodstuffs?

Ben and Mary, great news for both of you, glad to hear!

Melanie, awesome stuff on the bike fixin'.  I am so grateful that my training partner is a mechanic cause I know nuthin' and have no time to learn..

I know I am missing a ton of acknowledgements etc, sorry!

Feeling your pain Kristen. Currently sitting through my forth school graduation for the year. I must say that I am pretty over them. I worked out the other day that I have attended over 50 school graduations in the last 10 years, and I don't even have children.

But there is a light at the end of the tunnel because this is the last one for this year.

Feel your pain with marking. Just in terms of writing progress reports (not all the thinking and collating of work, tests, etc. that goes into giving the actual grades), I write 120 full paragraphs of comments per semester. Have worked out that all told progress reports consume close to a full work week of time, except that we don't really get any time during the actual work week to do them--it's all done on the weekends and at night over about four weeks total.

Pretty much everything strenuous for the rest of the term is done. Even escaped the staff party early tonight so I can run at a decent time tomorrow. (No great sacrifice--have never been much of a party animal, the music was awful and way too loud, and seeing all the happy couples, or at least couples trying their best to look happy for the evening, kind of depresses me. Training is a good excuse to be antisocial sometimes.) All that's left is the plane ride from hell. (I call it the World's Longest Commute, though surely some people have longer ones!)

Does anyone one have a good remedy for taking the itch out of jellyfish (stinger) stings? I got some doozies yesterday that are as itchy as FACH, one of them goes down the side of my face. Trying really hard not to scratch but not succeeding well.

I have heard that meat tenderizer or baking soda works......Yikes--itch just thinking about it. I got stung on the cheeks by baby jelliies at Bintan in Indonesia last year; I think they had one of those products at the med tent but didn't want to stop as was in it to win it (AG). Benadryl maybe? My face itched for the entire bike ride, until I started pouring water over myself on the run! (Probably actually visible in the avatar pic--it's from several hours and a couple of ice packs later--my cheeks aren't normally quite that red or puffy.)

I've heard it depends upon the type of jellyfish, but rinse in vinegar and then soak the area in hot water for up to 20 minutes.  Don't know how you can soak your face though!  Maybe hot compresses.

All you people that have gotten stung by jellies have my respect - that scares the crap out of me! I would think any antihistamine would work pretty good to stop the itch - Benadryl being the best but it may knock you out. I'd try Claritin/Allegra/Zyrtec (Zyrtec is my favorite when I get hives).

We have ZERO snow and temps are in the mid 50s here in the Northeast so instead of skiing the 2 open trails (of 80) of man made snow we went to the mountain and hiked to the top. Because of the way the two trails traversed the mountain the only way up to avoid snow (and therefore skiers) was STRAIGHT UP. I mean it was steep to me - I'm not a hiker. On the plus side my hips don't hurt today which means my strength routine is working but on the downside my quads are SO tired today that I couldn't pedal out of zone 1! LOL FRIED!

Hope you all had a good weekend. Race reports anyone?!!

Wow, lots of reasons to smile this morning, manatees, thank you!!!  Ben can shower now, Mary can see now (and work and workout), Yanti popped in with an awesome mini-RR, and we had some racers this weekend!

Here's one more bit of good news (although not a big deal in the big scheme of things) - THE WIDOWS FINALLY WON A GAME!!  We won 6-4 yesterday, yeah!  Now our record is 1-1-6.

Edited to add: I've not nothing but sympathy for your jellyfish stings, Stacey.  One of my least favorite 'injuries' since I've not found any good remedies.

Also adding: the cheesecake/pound cake looks VERY yum but very fattening!

Hello everyone, I have left the fantasyland of vacation and returned to the land of the working. It looks like a lot of good has been going on! Congrats to racers and to DL'rs that are on the mend. We had a good time getting away and have had a very full return to reality. I hope everyone is doing well and that the weather clears up for many of you. It has been wet where it should be dry, warm where it should be cool, and hot where it should be warm. I hope things get sorted out soon!

Yesterday was my final swim class, and here's how it shakes down:

Started with my 100 free hovering in the 2:25 range, open turns only, backstroke literally moved me backwards in the water, and I had no idea how to butterfly.

10 sessions later, and I can get a 100 free in at 1:46, and can do 100 repeats in the 1:50s, give or take 1 second. I can do front and back flipturns, and they're usually successful. Breaststroke is still tiring, but it also looks good, and I did 5x100 repeats in class yesterday. And while butterfly will always be a work in progress, yesterday I actually swam 2 25s of real live fly. Such fun!

I still feel like my freestyle is quite slow, but I will keep working on it over the winter. I can't wait to actually use my swimming in a race come spring!

Edited, because my starting 100 was closer to 2:25 than 2:00, if my logs are right!!

Good luck! Had seen improvement in mind, but still a ways to go. Something about last Friday's therapy session was a bit ambitious leading to an uncomfortable start to the weekend.
