Originally posted by JBacarella My training was blown to pieces this weekend and it looks like things will be tricky hopefully for just the next couple of weeks. My 80 year old Mom is in the advanced stages of Alzheimer's, and my 83 year old father finally admitted he can't do it any longer. He is an Ironman, the weekends we went down to help were exhausting. I really don't know how he did it 24-7. We have had in home care for a couple of years, plus my brother and I have been helping, but the disease has progressed to the point that it is no longer safe to have her in the home and she needs 24 hour nursing care. It was a devastating admission for my Dad to make. I live 3.5 hours from them and my wife is a marketing director for a nursing home. We are going to move him into our house and she is going into my wife's facility. We spent the weekend preparing a room for him and preparing for construction. We are also going to have to build him a bathroom. He comes with his own medical issues.

I'm truly sorry to hear about your parents.  Alzheimer's is a mean disease to be sure, and it's incredible that your father was able to care for her as long as he did, solo.  As tough as it may be on all involved, it sounds like some wise decisions were made regarding your mom's care and your dad's well-being, too.

Alzheimer's is such a terrible, cruel, b*tch of a disease.  I'm so sorry that you and your family are going through this, but I'm very glad that your mom will be getting all the nursing care she needs.  My thoughts are with you and your family.

Sorry to hear this Jim.  Alzheimers is tough on the whole family.  I hope the transitions go smoothly.

Hi everyone - long time, no post. I am sorry, you guys are busy so i am not going to go back to catch up!

Back from a lovely vacation to the Dominican Republic. Fantastic weather, fantastic resort, fantastic time. I feel very fortunate to be able to do such a thing. Super fun time with our little one who loved paddling around the pool in her life jacket and having mommy and daddy's undivided attention. I managed to run a couple of times - our resort had a beautiful gym that we only discovered on the 4 day - it's brand new so it wasn't on the maps ...

February is a new month and i have a few things going on - planning to do a 'peach month' - i am setting some parameters as to what  counts for my peach and re-doing a junk food challenge i did with my husband last year.

how's everyone doing?

Thoughts go out to you - it's a terrible situation but it sounds like your whole family is in it together and that makes it so much better.

Training is not so important but maybe some exercise will help manage the stress a bit. do what you can and don't worry about it.

As the others have said, I am so glad that your dad is getting help and that you and your wife can help them with the transition. Sadly I've seen how much that horrible disease can wear on a family.

Dave - Thanks for the bike pjorn!

Darren - I didn't realize that you had to plan your own route!  YIKES!

Tom - Sufferfest type workouts.  If you really get into it, Trainer Road, etc. or else just watch last night's Daily Show (or Twin Peaks)

Kirsten - I hope that works settles down for you!

Markus - I hope that you were able to get your run in!

Steve - Thinking of you!

I haven't set the appointment yet (they were closed on Friday). However, based on the fact that missing 10 miles this weekend (so far) is driving me bat chit, I don't think I'm going to be agreeing to missing much training.

Janyne, the Ragnar I'm doing in a couple weeks will be different than my last because it's a point to point with vans and all that. Do you still have your packing list for your relay? Any words of wisdom?

This needs to be pared down but this is what I started with.  We had two 15-passenger vans.  Each van had a driver and six runners (so seven people total).  I did not use the sleeping bag except as an extra pillow.  I also did not use the iPod but I was really glad that I had the extra battery for recharging the phone, etc.  I should have brought more real food (trail mix, etc.)

* sleep mask
* sleeping bag
* pillow
* toxic waste bag (aka, trash bag)
* reflective gear
* headlamp
* three running outfits
* team shirt
* two pairs of shoes
* newspapers (to stuff in shoes if wet)
* iPod (for white noise during napping)
* phone, GPS, chargers
* money
* clean between running clothing
* camera
* ID
* toiletries, including toothbrush
* instant shower wipes from REI
* bodyglide-type lube
* a few snacks/real food, coconut water
* sandals/between run shoes
* towel
* The Stick

Awesome thanks! We will also have 6 runners in each car. Not sure if we have a driver or if we are taking turns. The group is talking about going to the grocery store when we get to Phoenix.

it's 60 degrees here today.

SIXTY!!! Normal for this time of year is like 40? MAYBE?! Crazy.

However, it works out in our favor. Since I waited sooooo long to pull the trigger, we are having our house sided NOW. The guys probably love this weather too! AND because of the noise I have the dog here with me at work. She is not so pleased. I borrowed a big open top crate so people can still come over and pet her but she can't get out. She's a goofball.

URGH Tax season is here my friends.

Tax season, ugh.  Good luck!  Hopefully the dog doesn't mind the change of venue for a short while.

Is your van running six legs in a row and then having the other van run six legs in a row, etc.?  If so, plan to have brunch/lunch/dinner at the stops.  My van went second.  We met them at the start and then we went to Cracker Barrel for brunch.  Then my van started our runners (when your van has runners, it's all about who is on course and who is next, etc.), then we had a break for dinner and drove to the next van exchange.  We slept and picked up the baton again at like 3am.  Then we had a pancake breakfast at the final van exchange.  I think that was the best part.  Breakfast, visiting outside the van, knowing you just have one leg left.  So much fun!

Yeah, and those van rental's aren't cheap.  I think that it was $100/person for us to have it for the weekend (including gas).

Hey, what training plan would you recommend to a friend just beginning triathlon?  I have a couple friends that want to try a sprint (300y/12 mi/5k) at the start of May.  I know how I would prep for myself, but I probably shouldn't write a training plan for them.  Any ideas?

I like the plans they have here - 3x Balanced sprint would be a good one as its time based which may be less intimidating to a complete beginner

Yeah, plans here should be fine.

Will do.  Too bad our mentor group isn't still taking members, otherwise I'd try to get the two of them in here.

Not only is he a great athlete, he is a great mentor. I have been in his mentor group for the last two rounds and he inspires and encourages our entire group daily.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
