I hear ya, my weekend got expensive when I signed up for a marathon... and the VIP package

Originally posted by Hot Runner Thanks also for the stalking! Survived the swim--actually I think it was my best time here. Very rough, though. I think I spent the first ten minutes just getting out through the break. Just had to make like a sea turtle and keep diving under big waves. Even out beyond the break there were a lot of swells. Nice ride back to shore, though. Never really felt the love on the bike but it was my fastest HIM split (I think) by a few minutes. Quite windy at many points on the course. Run was a suffer-fest as usual--I could tell my run fitness is really not where it was two years ago as time was about ten minutes off in similar conditions, but I did what I could with the fitness I have right now. Ended up fourth in my AG; missed out on the podium by about 5 minutes. 5:34:30 final time. Considering that two of the top-ranked 40-44 women in the world were in the race and just entered my AG, I'm not too sad about that. Actually kind of glad I don't have to stay for awards--just avoided heat exhaustion/cramping on the run, but it's really miserably hot now. Just feels good to sit in the AC and put my feet up!

Congratulations! Nice race under some tough conditions!

Great job to all our racers!

Glad you were OK on the swim, Karen.

And Stacey - I hope your tweaked leg isn't too bad.  Rest up and heal!

For the first 10 miles or so it was good, but a bit warm. The last couple miles were a sufferfest. It was hot and I, stupidly, did not bring along any nutrition so I started getting light headed.  It was fun to have my RWB folks at the finish tho.

Congrats on the great races everyone! Sounds like the pod kicked some serious a*s. Has anyone traveled to a race solo and/or done Boulder 70.3? It just so happens I'll have some free training time and a free weekend on Aug 4th and I'm thinking this would be a fun race to do. I'm just not sure how boring/lonely going solo for 3 days would be.

I've not done IMBoulder but if you've never been to Boulder you should. It's an incredible city and the support for races is insane. The city alone will keep you well occupied even if you are alone.  Also, my coach travels alone for full and half IM's on a regular basis. His wife got bored of watching him race years ago. He doesn't mind it. I think the lack of a Sherpa would be the hard part.

DH and I watched a show yesterday on Amazon Prime called Run For Your Life. It was a fun show to watch. It was 4, half hour episodes about a Welsh rugby player who went to a small village in Wales, Deri I think, to help 16 women prepare for a half marathon. The women were all sedentary, drinkers, smokers, but they had a great attitude. He came at the coaching from a friendly point of view rather than a harsh one.  DH and I could have used sub-titles at some points but it was really fun to watch.

I've done a number of 70.3s solo before. I'll caveat this by saying I like to be alone in general, travel alone and train alone --- so the (lack of) social aspect didn't bother me at all. The hardest part was after the race and having to pack up all my gear, bike (and a couple of times camping site/gear), etc. by myself. I was so exhausted and depleted, that part really sucked! A few of the races I also drove about 3 hours home immediately afterwards. I can say for certain that was not a great decision haha

I have done several 70.3's solo, or essentially solo (without family or close friends in the race). That included two world championships, which are probably the biggest events I've done, that involved major travel, as well as two IM Vietnam 70.3's. I do most of my training solo and am not a particularly social person, so it doesn't bother me too much, with the exception of Worlds-- almost everyone does come with family, tri club buddy, or at least a spouse in tow for that, and it really does feel kind of sad not to be able to share a big event with someone special.....

What I've learned from the solo show:

* It really helps to spend a bit more money to have simpler pre and post-race travel. That might mean using a service like Tri Bike Transport so you don't have to lug your bike everywhere and deal with assembly and dis-assembly. Some events have bike service that will just take care of build and disassembly on site for a fee. You can often get hotel or event packages that include transfer to/from the airport. That is really nice if you are a woman traveling alone, arriving late at night, and/or don't want to deal with a bike and airport taxis in an unfamiliar place.

*Along the same lines, it's usually easier to stay at or very near race HQ. More convenient if you have no Sherpa, and less lonely--plenty of other athletes to meet. This really comes in handy if you're hurting after the race, especially in hot or otherwise difficult weather. It's SO nice just to be able to head back to the room for a shower and rest without having to drive/walk/bike a long way or get a cab back to another hotel.

*As others have said, post-race packing up is the worst part because you are so tired and depleted. If at all possible, hire someone to deal with the bike. If you have to fly/drive out right after the race, already have non-essentials packed in advance and post-race clothes laid out so you just need to shower and pack your race gear.

*Also, it REALLY helps to give yourself the evening after the race to rest up before driving or flying back, especially if you are dealing with a bike. Driving a long distance or waiting in airport lines and being confined in a seat isn't the best way to kick-start your recovery!

And race report is up! It is kind of a magnum opus.... At least it is not the tragic sob story that Worlds last fall was. It actually did not occur to me until the night before this race that I hadn't raced since September. Then I had horrible visions of doing something totally harebrained as a result, like leaving my timing chip at the hotel, forgetting to put back the air in my tires, or getting onto the bike in my speed suit, or something so dumb I didn't even think of it because I'd totally forgotten how to race!

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions everyone! I need to look into flights/hotels but if it's not too expensive I'm leaning towards doing it. Thankfully Tribike Transport is servicing the event so that will make one less thing to worry about.

Absolutely. If I were racing solo a few states away, it would be so worth it to have someone else deal with my bike.

I've done Boulder 70.3 for the past 4 years. It is a fun race. Not doing it this year as I will be racing Santa Rosa the week before.

Few hints:
As you will be driving, plan on it taking at least 45 min-an hour to get into the Rez to park. Last year the race was delayed 45 minutes because people couldn't get to the race.

The water will be borderline wet suit legal. When I did IM Boulder in 2015, which was the same August weekend, it was not wet suit legal. 2016 it was barely legal. Last year it was non-wet suit legal the few days before the race, but we had a few cold nights that brought the water from 77 to 73.

I love the bike. It's really not that bad. You get to ride past Winston, Boulder's most famous pig. I love calling to him during races - he comes running when you call him!

The run is incredibly hot with no shade. You go from a dirt road to pavement and you can see the heat waves rising from the pavement. This where I found myself in the back of a cop car last year and have no idea how I got there, hehe.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks member with the cat picture . Hard to keep track of everyone's names. While on a business trip yesterday and feeling sluggish I decided to take the plunge (sitting in an airport lounge)! I've registered and booked my hotel so now it's time to buckle down and figure out how to train for this thing. I'm very excited!
