Good luck to all the other racers and way to go no DL!

Congrats Judy, she is beautiful.

So after moving the Victoria swim to the other (very weedy) end of the lake, the machine that cuts said weeds is broken.  Scuttlebut is that they are moving the swim back to the unweedy end, but it will be shortened.  We shall see!

Jonathan and I are also doing Buffalo Springs (along with 3mar from the main forum) so we'll have to have a manatee meetup.

As far as the heat, hopefully it won't be too humid. Just realize you're going to have to slow down. Figure out now where you need to limit yourself by HR to make it through the run, and keep it under that number for most of the run. You're not going to like it but you need to forget about pace.

Seems like all but one of my HIM's and IM's have been in very warm weather.  A couple of things I've picked up along the way is to hydrate consistently.  Get an idea of how much you think that you will need through the bike and run and than parse that out as evenly throughout the duration.  A constant gradual inflow is better than gulping down half a bottle at once.

I try to drink at least a few sips at every aid station on the run (usually at each mile).  On the run, take full advantage of ice to keep your body temp down as much as possible.  I stuff it everywhere.  Adjust your goal paces for the heat and stay flexible enough to slow down even further if you have to.

Another thing I learned was to wear running shoes that have good drainage.  First HIM (Hawaii 70.3), with constantly dumping water on myself, my shoes filled up with fluids and every step was squish, squish, squish.  It was really annoying and my feet looked like heck after the race.

Good luck.

Friendly , yes. Timid still. Our other cats are not happy with her presence so she has been cautious in exploring. I'm pretty sure she'll be more friendly and cuddle more once she settles in. She is smart enough to leave the toys that Snickers likes alone, she's been playing with something that Smickers doesn't like. Both Mocha and Snickers are pouting and have voiced low growls and a couple of swats have been exchanged, but they have taken to hiding upstairs where she hasn't tried to go.

HIM in 90+ degree weather--yes, believe I have done that! Vietnam 70.3 was about 90 degrees, sunny, and humid this year (by the run, maybe 80's on the bike), and that was actually my best HIM time by about a minute. Last year it was a bit more extreme--it got up in the 90's on the bike, and hit 105 in some places on the run. Humiditywas a bit lower, but it's never really "low" in the tropics! That was not so pretty (I was also sick) but I did finish.

Pretty much everything Popsracer said. Basically, work out a plan for hydration in training, and try to follow it to the letter. Make sure you are taking in enough sodium/electrolytes as well as water. I do that with a combination of electrolyte drink (Nuun), rolling my bike chocolate in sea salt, and gu with 200 mg of sodium (Power Bar tangerine). You might find that you can get down fewer calories than you could in cooler weather--just do what you can with that. I train in the same conditions so it doesn't bother me to be a bit underfueled--it's better than doing the run with GI issues and I certainly put back the calories after the race!

I think during IM Vietnam 70.3 I had 84 oz. of Nuun (electrolyte, no calories) and 20 oz of water on the bike. That sounds like a lot for someone my size (115 pounds) but I sweat a lot and that's what it takes! I have my bike set up to carry 84 oz (frame bottle, double torpedo rear mount, aerobottle) and stopped at one of the bottle exchanges. I didn't do the latter last year and felt like I ended up a bit dehydrated, so I took the time to do it this year. I also carried a double hydration belt with 40 oz of Nuun on the run (I took my own, as what was served on course was a local product that is truly disgusting). I did get into a bit of trouble as there wasn't ice at the aid stations when I went through, and I kept drinking the cold bottled water they were handing out to stay cool. Think I got a bit low on electrolytes due to that. Typical symptoms of that are tingling in your hands, light-headedness, and sometimes nausea and vomiting. Try to avoid it as it is not a pleasant feeling. The nausea part didn't hit me until after the finish, thank goodness!

As far as cooling, anything--play with ice and cold water and sponges whenever you can. I stick them pretty much everywhere when they are on offer. At the Vietnam race, volunteers will put ice water over your head if you ask--that was great! The only issue is your shoes then become very soaked. Mine do okay like that but I still ended up destroying some toenails. Cooling stuff works best for me on the back of the neck and (for ice) in my mouth.

The final element would be pacing--you're going to have to slow down somewhat. Power can be a useful metric on the bike but you will have to dial back if it is very hot. I always pace the run by feel and don't use HR. Hard to say exactly as I haven't run in cool weather for ages, but I think my run would be 6-10 minutes faster on a similar course in cool conditions; bike maybe 5-6 minutes faster. Not sure about others--for me it doesn't make as big a difference as some might think. But then I train in this stuff 10 months a year. You will have to adapt pacing more if not acclimated.

I'll tell you after tomorrow if I don't melt! It's supposed to be 92-95 in Boulder tomorrow and it's humid. Remember, anything over 15% humidity sucks here in Colorado, hehe.

Seriously - Base Salt, lots of fluids, keep cool by throwing water on yourself (pour it down your front, not just your back and head) and if you feel great, hold back a bit so that you still feel great going into the last 10k of the run.

The running aspect of an Ironman triathlon is a marathon. Most people take on a marathon as a single event and the training for this uses up a lot of their time. Here are some tips for the run.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
