Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: SBR "U" Yes, RPE on the bike Sunday actually felt way, way, easier than my first HIM, where I put down a 1:43 run split. I actually spent the whole bike leg (of my first HIM) thinking, "Maybe I'm pushing this too hard and will pay on the run," but I was humiliated and getting passed by literally almost everyone (I'd started in the first wave), so I did. I think some of it was not having as good a bike fit and position, and a slight tougher course. I've been at this stuff a long, long time and know my body. My legs never felt like I was pushing it uncomfortably hard, and they did in my first one. Just got into a good rhythm and rode. I did make a conscious decision to just execute my original race plan (I envisioned that the run due to heat was not going to be ideal and maybe in the 1:50-2:00 range, toward 2:00 if I really had a hard time with it) as long as I was able to and just finish if I wasn't. Wasn't going to modify it for the bike if I felt okay on that leg, which I did. I don't think loafing on the bike would have helped my run--I just would have been starting later, when it was hotter! In retrospect the only thing I would change is maybe to do more (at least a few) of my long runs in the heat of the day. That is hard to do in our climate without the support you have in a race (aid stations, medical on standby) but maybe I could loop by my house as an "aid station". I think doing that even once or twice might have given me a better feel for how hard it was going to be, or at least helped me have a more realistic idea of what I could do. Thinking of entering another in the States this summer. Would really like to see what I could do without extreme heat/illness dragging me down. |

Extreme Veteran 5722 | Subject: RE: SBR "U" I wasn't sure to post this here or there but since we were on the topic of aero here...well a) For hoots, use the air density estimator in GC and you will see you are considerably less aero in 3C weather. It makes a big difference. I noticed they noted air density on every run at the track. b) I did my first few runs with my ITU style desoto suit with the plan to test the LG M2 later. When I put on the M2 (on top of the Desoto) I got no improvement. They made me go change and not have anything under and boom .013 cda difference. I noticed in Jason's FB picture he has a lot of wrinkles on the front. It's so weird that this makes such a difference. But at 40km/h the little things really really do make a difference. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: SBR "U" Sadly, the awesome HIM PB is not gonna happen this year. IM Lake Stevens, which was my original thought, has been moved from July to August 16, which puts it out of reach as have to be in Vietnam by then. Vineman closed (probably within minutes after it opened) and anyway also very hot. Chelanman in eastern Washington (where I did my first HIM) is beautiful and doable but it would mean sacrificing the only Oly that my family can attend, which is the following week. Chelanman's also a tougher bike route (two big climbs) and, I recall, looking at the race info, is about 2 miles longer than standard. IM Bintan not doable as it's our second week of school and not allowed leave then. Next fall, sadly, I am going to have to take a total break from racing and anything but maintenance training as I have some very time-consuming professional commitments till December. So it looks like I am going to go after the 2:30 Oly this summer, and maybe have another go at Danang next year. I think I need to figure out how to get the tri bike home. First, though, two weeks off any kind of serious training! Last time I did not take enough time off/easy and really paid for it with a string of nagging injuries. I've told myself I won't do any serious training until I finish my coursework and report cards--that's going to be at least two weeks, probably closer to three. Any advice on transitioning from a HIM to Oly focus? I've actually been using a combo of the "Oly to HIM Bridge" and intermediate HIM plan for the run and swim, plus the bike workouts one of this group sent me, but I'll need to move in the opposite direction--shorter and faster--this summer! Should have a decent base as I've been doing run speed work 2X a week, and until the last 3-4 weeks, a lot of riding at faster than HIM pace/effort. Swim should be fine as we have a very good hometown master's club. I do have a trainer at home and a great, very uncrowded MUP where I can do longer rides in aero. And, of course, it's the "running capital of the world". |

TT report is up I figured that 3C would have an effect for sure, it seems that it was about 10 degrees warmer 2 years ago. I definitely had lots of wrinkling going on. Interesting that having the suit on over top of something changed things so much! And, of course, it's the "running capital of the world". The large majority of the time I'm training to raise the entire aerobic profile and have a fairly significant volume year round, so it's really only a few workouts difference in the last month or two. Swimming didn't really change at all regardless of the event once I had joined masters. There were a few race specific bike workouts lasting a few hours that had larger blocks of moderate to comfortably hard (sweet spot). For an Oly I would have shortened the duration and upped the intensity of the harder portions. Maybe going for an entire hour around expected race intensity (that's also about what the bike split should take me). Running would have had a little less on longer runs and making sure to be able to push near threshold pacing well. How far out is the race? Thinking of a little over threshold for both the bike & run as HIM training is less likely to have as much. You're coming off an HIM base and I believe you're rather active year round, so it'll be more nudging your fitness towards the increased intensity. There are some notable differences between the various tri distances, but they aren't necessarily *that* different. A lot of people need to build up their fitness in the first place and many plans take that into account. Someone more active will do more just emphasizing some things specific to the race they are focusing on. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: SBR "U" Thanks! Thinking along those lines but not ready to make up a specific plan yet. I ran into my boss and he says he will support me if I want to do Bintan at end of August (which is the only place that might possibly be hotter than Danang LOL, but at least I might have the chance of not being sick), or another race in a more temperate climate next school year, but that's really hard from here. Maybe Australia? Not familiar with the weather there and transport would be expensive. At any rate, will focus on the Oly this summer. Thinking that a HIM in the first few weeks of the school year is kind of stupid, but if the issue is my immune system going whacko every time I taper, maybe the stress of starting the year would be enough to keep it in check. It is kind of a joke with teachers that we get sick every time we have a vacation. Maybe my body is like that with taper. Worse yet, both of my "sick" races in the last two years were preceded by not just taper but a week's vacation. Maybe I'd be better off backing off training but getting stressed at work instead! |

Veteran 1677 Houston, Texas | Subject: RE: SBR "U" Currently doing a bike focus for a couple 40k time trials (ITT on a Saturday, TTT the next day) -- how dumb would it be to race a sprint the weekend before? The ITT is an "A" race, but I know my bike power is still not where it was last year and am not expecting a miracle in the next 5.5 weeks. Run and swim are really just in maintenance mode right now, but I think the sprint would be fun. |

Unless you were coming off a monster training block, you don't need to rest that much the weekend before a 40k. A light training day on Saturday and a Sprint Tri on Sunday isn't going to wreck you for one week. |

Yesterday they did a VO2max test and they want me. For you science geeks, remember what a calorimeter is ? Remember we used styroforam cups in HS ? Well, they are going to place me in a giant calorimeter with a recumbent bike in it. It's lie a cylinder vault. Really cool. Two internal thermometers are reading core temp. One goes through the nose down the throat, the other comes in from the other end, if you know what I mean. They make you workout at given wattages at given % of VO2max which they determined last session. The calorimeter measures heat dissipated. The thermometers measure internal heat and there are skin sensors measuring heat, sweat..... They can then figure out how much heat you dissipate and then the next stage is to figure out how or why I am not dissipating heat. Other than the thermometers it sounds pretty cool. They did a full EKG on my during the VO2max so I am 100% able to operate at high intensity. Kind of freaky how high our BP goes at VO2max. The cardiologist said it was fine. Gotta love science !! |

Aside from the "other" thermometer, that sounds AWESOME! The more I think about it, the more interesting it sounds. To understand the mechanisms by which the body releases heat is very important in what we do. I would love them to allow me to try some of these suits that claim they help you when wet to see if they truly help dissipating heat. The cardiologist that tested me is a very good marathon runner. He has 5.5% body fat. He told me he believes body mass does play a role, but fat not as much. This was interesting. Like many things we probably all struggle with heat to various extents for various reasons and to understand the specific reasons can only help fix them. |

Obviously no benefit from wasting the time trying to put a tight top on your wet body if it's not going to result in any improved aerodynamics! |
