I'll have to chat with my Sherpa Wife and question her on why my stuff was still there |

Just curious as how wide the channel is. Does it start narrow at Wrightsville Beach and become wider as you get to the first turn. Reason for asking is I have heard left side of channel is faster. Is that also the most direct route? Thanks.
It's wide, google Masonboro Inlet and look at a satellite view. After the initial start if you go to far left down the channel you'll have to come back towards the middle a little to get around the turn boat, which used to have a Squiqqly Man (used car lot type deal, but wasn't used last year not sure if they changed that or the weather made that happen, forgot to ask). I swam towards the left of center and had to make no adjustments.. |

Not doing the race this year, but have done it previously. Plenty of room in the channel. Narrows a little after you make the turn, but you have plenty of space througout. Just one of many things that makes this a great race! |

I stayed to the left and angled back to the turn. After the turn I went as far left as I could and cut the corner going into the final little left turn to the exit. I was as close to the marsh as I could get and it was just me and a volunteer on a stand up paddle board. The swim was great. |

Extreme Veteran 547 Atlanta | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread Ok, I've been MIA from BT the past year, but I signed up for B2B a few weeks ago, so I may be looking here for people to keep me sane. It's my first full iron, and I couldn't be more excited/scared/nervous/empowered (and that's just some of the emotions I go through almost daily). Fun times! Looking forward to the next 4 months! |

Had so much fun almost wish I was doing it again this year but unable to fit it into my schedule. You will love the race. The new finishing line looks great. |

Veteran 133 Northern Virginia | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread So in all honesty, who on here is taking their swim training a lot less serious knowing that this swim is super fast with the current etc etc. Don't get me wrong, I still plan on training, but I feel like having that in the back of my mind (and knowing I've already done two Ironmans before so the distance isn't a confidence issue) just makes me want to cut back every swim session it seems. I know this is dead wrong though!! |

I know this is dead wrong though!! My training partner is of that mindset. Our training plan (BT Beginner IM) gives both yardage and time for the swim, whereas the run and bike just go by time. Last year we did all of the yardage, but since we are poor swimmers, it takes a LOT more time that the plan suggests. This year he said he is going to swim for time and cut the yardage short since the swim will be "easy." I will do all of the yardage in the plan, but that's because I am anal when it comes to training plans. |

I generally take this approach for when I have done the B2B HIM. I feel my time is better spent running and biking than swimming. This "plan" is also a bit of a gamble. in 2010 there was no assistance in the swim and the chop actually made it feel like you were going upstream. If that happens again, the lack of swim training can come and bite you in the butt. |

Master 2490 Atlanta, Georgia | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread I was going to post that I thought swimming less in prep for B2B, and the incoming tide the morning of 10/20 that will in all probability make for a fast swim split, was ok(I have done less volume than typical for both of my 140.6's at B2B)...On further review, there're too many variables that could make for such adverse conditions that training less was not such a good idea. All I'm saying is, better safe than sorry. Maybe a better way to look at it is, if you're overtrained for the swim, imagine how strong you'll feel if you're getting out of the water 20mins sooner than your body was expecting... Just my $.02USD |

Extreme Veteran 1942 In front of computer when typing this. | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread I did it in 2010 with qrkid when there was no current. I was very surprised when I hadn't reached the turn in the time that I thought I would be done. Having said that, I will prob do less swimming than "the plan says", but mainly because that time is better spent (for me) running and biking, much like qrkid said. But I have no issue with the swim distance. If you are worried or are a relatively weak swimmer, I really don't think you want to be in the situation where you barely survive the swim...not that easy to have a good start to the bike if you are toast from the swim. |

I was wondering if anyone had any video of the bike course, sounds like it is relatively flat, but where I live is REALLY flat so if I need to go hill hunting, I will. If no footage, anyone who has done the race before, can you give me an idea of what the course is like. |

It is flat. Very flat. But it can also be windy and cold. And windy. |

Like Louskie said. Flat. The only hill in the HIM will be about 1mi from T2, when you have t go over the Isabel Holmes bridge to get into downtown (This assumes that they have not changed the course from previous years, except for the last mile or so). There is a slight bump after the turn around on the little 1mi out and back on Bourough Rd. but it is very slight and all of 100yds. Blueberry Rd. is quite rough in my opinion, especially compared to going up 421, and the change in road surface really requires more effort Biggest factor on this course is, Like Louskie said, the wind. I have ridden the course twice in the last week (well the majority of the course up 421 to Blueberry to Bourough and then back to downtown). On training rides I have averaged 24mph going out and then only 20mph coming back even though I have a higher average power on the return leg). Quite common to have a constant 15-20mph wind with higher gusts. |

4 | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread Just signed up for the half and being late to the game, the host hotel is full. I'll be driving down alone and not familiar with the area. There aren't any others <4 miles with availability and thats a long walk over to the shuttle pre-race. Is it reasonably safe to assume that the convention center and other parking lots mentioned on the website will have enough room for me to leave my car for the day after driving over early race morning from a hotel and back afterward? I don't want to have to trust a cab to come that early and won't know anyone available for a drop off. I dread the thought of getting over to the shuttle pick up, not finding a place to leave the car, missing the race start... This will be my first race where the start/transitions/finish aren't in one place, so any help with logistics would be great! Katherine |

I booked a great condo right at the finish line for 3 nights at what 2 nights would have cost me at the host hotel. There are some really nice homes available for cheap. Guess the locals don't have friends in Lake Placid that they talk too lol!!! |

4 | Subject: RE: Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon : Official Thread Thanks so much! I had seen mention of that site, but just figured it would be for big groups of people, but there were some nice downtown places that look like a great alternative to a run of the mill hotel, and not bad prices! |

Katherine It can seem a little confusable at first but promise that the moving parts of this point-point race will make sense as we get closer. Biggest decision about where to stay is: close to the start/T1 at Wrightsville Beach or close to the finish at Downtown/riverfront. There are going to be more VRBO listings for the area around the start but personal preference would be find someplace near the finish, even if Hilton is booked. FWIW, Hilton had rooms come available close to race day last year... |
