It is possible to donate money toward the Arbor Day Foundation ($1 per tree) and they will plant trees in either Tahoe or Chippewa National forests in the person's memory and it's possible to search the site to see the donations/locations (x amount of trees planted at x forest in x's name). A friend of mine did this when my dad passed away. He now has 10 trees growing in Tahoe National Forest. I guess we could donate to the hospital or research center that is local to Steve - as our contribution to fight cancer, and also plant trees in the memory of Steve. |

Just to say you don't have to wait. and I would be happy to contribute to this as well as the race.

That's part of my mission - to watch. And that's an idea too - the family may ask for donations to go to a specific charity. I'm still trying to dig up more information too. Sound ok? Randee, could you take the lead on this? Maybe Karen or Jen could help if we want to do the Terry Fox runs? I guess the main things that we need right now is a charity and a target event. I suppose we could do "for Steve" shirts and put them on Cafepress or something. Take a post "race" photo with it and post it on social media. Dunno. IIRC, it was a type of kidney cancer. But I don't think that matters from a Charity standpoint--finding a cure for one will help find a cure for all. I just had a co-worker let us all know she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. I think a cancer center in Bellingham would be fine. |

Master 4452 | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Manatee à trois How many miles/km do you typically get out of a pair of running shoes? I think we have discussed this before and I know it is very individual, but just curious what everyone's n=1 is. I find my right foot starts to tell me to start a new pair at about 500km (just over 300 miles). It usually takes me several runs to realize why my foot is hurting; I'm happy to report I am getting smrter as it only took yesterday and today of mild soreness to check on my mileage in this pair. |

Does anyone run in different brands/mix up their shoes on a regular basis? |

I was going to ask that questions many times. I do not run the portfolio you have, but I change them once a year. Although, in the previous years I was not running as much (only races up to 10k), I also did not track/log my training. My feet pronate and if I don't stretch my calves enough, I feel pain in my inner feet after about 40 minutes of running. If stretching does not help and the pain comes even sooner than 30 minutes, I take it as an indication it's time for new shoes. |

I forget exactly, but think it's been 300-400 per shoe most of the time. Although that treadmill pair I'm using now has to be over 1,000. Race weight is similar for me. I have a few types of shoes for different running surfaces or situations. Racing pair, trail, etc. Since most running tends to be on the roads I'll have a few of the same type for that, but a single pair for other uses. The road training sets I'll try to keep a rotation between lower and higher mileage shoes. Not just alternating. I can feel something is wearing down more easily with that low mileage pair as a reference before it gets too close to injury. |

I run in Asics and set them to switch out at 600km. I definitely notice it by the time they need it but i am pretty compulsive about keeping track of the mileage and not letting it get out of hand. |

I have done the alternating thing. Interestingly, I was just reading an article that says there is no benefit to that from a 'resting the shoe' point. Years ago there was indications to do so, but with the materials they use now, not necessary. Some say use different brands/models and rotate them as your feet will work slightly differently in each, using muscles differently. I would love to do so, but I find one brand, one model that works for me and changing causes footie sadness. |

I have read that many people get 500+ miles out of their shoes and I was feeling short-changed! This is why I buy 2 or 3 pairs when they go on sale. Time to break out one of the hidden shoe boxes |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Manatee à trois I usually rotate between two or three pairs of different models of my favorite brand (Saucony) at any given time. It's partly due to the idea that it's better for your feet, but mostly because it's so humid here (and getting drenched by rain is not uncommon either) that that's what it takes to have access to a pair of dry shoes! It's also impossible for me to replace running shoes without leaving the country, so I need to have a spare pair or two in case one self-destructs or wears out. I tend to use them for slightly different types of workouts. I have one pair that has considerably more padding/cushioning than the others--tend to use those for easier runs or when I'm feeling tired/sore; sometimes long runs if it's not too hot (more likely in the US). The Kinvara tend to get used for speedwork (they're also my race shoes), running on grass, or brick runs, since they're light and "feel fast". I also sometimes wear them for long runs if it's super hot, since they don't get as squishy when wet as the other shoes. Then I have another pair that's sort of in between those two. I try to wear each model at least once a week. Rotating that way and being fairly lightweight, my shoes last a long times, about a year. I don't track my running by miles but that would be able 150-200 hours of running. Let's say about 60 hours per shoe; averaging 9-minute miles (??) about 540 miles per pair. |
